BACKGROUNDS:
Data and Information Management plays a vital role in achieving these goals. It assists science, it safeguards scientific data for future use by a wider community and moreover it enables to combine these scientific data with other available oceanographic and marine data resources for a wide range of applications.

OBJECTIVES:
  • To support researchers, engineers, and other users of oceanographic and marine data to identify and to take benefit from available data resources
  • To make researchers aware of the added value of proper data management for their work and projects
  • To support researchers to develop appropriate data management plans in projects and proposals
  • To provide researchers with information on expert data management organisations in Europe
  • To stimulate cooperation between researchers and expert data management organisations in Europe

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The partnership has working relations with and is supported by EuroGOOS and MedGOOS, active in operational oceanography, and European Space Agency, active in promoting access and further use of marine remote sensing data and information.

BEIJING and SAN DIEGO, Calif. NYSE GB global shared memory was installed and has been in full operation since September. The new supercomputing resource is used to simulate the ocean environment, ocean airflow and computation of short-term numeric global ocean data changes. As one of the top labs in Marine Science and Numerical Modeling, FIO conducts various research projects including ocean circulation and global climate change, regional ocean science studies, oceanic information systems and oceanic biology. In order to generate more accurate and long-range forecasts of ocean weather and conditions, researchers apply increasingly sophisticated and complicated mathematical models. These calculations require the very high performance compute power and high I/O of the Altix system to run the new generation of ocean wave model code and real-time environment numerical modeling simulation. "Since data about the ocean environment is very difficult to acquire and often interrupted by the variation of ocean weather, to achieve the real-time simulation and monitoring, it requires high intensive computation in a specific given time period. The Altix supercomputer's shared-memory and scalable architecture combined with the 64-bit Linux

MERIS monitoring tracks planetary photosynthesis levels

Daily multispectral observations from Envisat's MERIS sensor are being combined with a sophisticated processing algorithm and powerful Grid computing to reveal global photosynthesis activity on land. This permits researchers to trace the state of health of terrestrial plant cover, identifying areas under stress and assessing damage from drought or fires.

ROYAL NETHERLANDS INSTITUTE FOR SEA RESEARCH
The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) is the leading research institute in the Netherlands for the basic marine sciences. The multidisciplinary research of the institute is carried out by 5 departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry and Geology, Biogeochemistry and Toxicology, Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology). Approximately 220 persons are currently appointed at the NIOZ. NIOZ has a large variety of instrumentation and is operating modernly equipped research vessels for coastal and ocean studies. The institute is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO); it is located on the Wadden Island of Texel, close to the mainland.

Virus control of the picophytoplankter Micromonas pusilla in European waters (MICROVIR)
In the Department of Biological Oceanography at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) a Post Doc Fellowship (duration 3 years) is available to participate in scientific research investigating the ecological role of viruses in marine phytoplankton population dynamics and diversity.
The scientific research of unicellluar algal cell mortality has gained increasing interest lately, due to the discovery of viruses being significant agents of algal cell death. Phytoplankton cell lysis can have a significant structuring impact on marine pelagic ecosystems, affecting algal species dynamics, diverstiy and succession, as well as influencing energy and material fluxes.

    Graduate School of Oceanography
KINGSTON, R.I. December 12, 2000 Following an international search, the University of Rhode Island has appointed David M. Farmer dean of its Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO), effective May 20, 2001. He succeeds Margaret Leinen, who was named assistant director for geosciences at the National Science Foundation. Professor James Yoder has served as interim dean since Leinen's departure in January. As dean, Farmer will have executive responsibility for the school and provide leadership for its academic, research and service responsibilities, as well as for efforts to obtain external funding for the school. GSO is one of the world's foremost marine research institutions. It currently enrolls approximately 100 graduate students and employs 300 faculty, researchers and support staff at the University's Narragansett Bay Campus. "I am pleased that we were able to attract a scientist of Dr. Farmer's caliber to provide leadership for our internationally known Graduate School of Oceanography. Our faculty are outstanding, as evidenced by the support their research garners from granting agencies. Dr. Farmer will build on GSO's strong reputation," said M. Beverly Swan, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

There follows the summary section of a report by Hassan B. Ali of the U.S. Office of Naval Research Asia Field Office in Tokyo on a May 6-12, 2001, trip to the National Center for Natural Science and Technology in Vietnam. Giuliano D'Andrea , Director of the US Army Research Office, Far East, also contributed. The full report may be accessed from http://www.ehis.navy.mil/tp/asia.asp . Dr. Ali may be reached at Hassan_Ali@onr.navy.mil Soon after the completion of the visit, several requests for collaboration were received by ONR IFO and AROFE. In particular, two of the researchers at the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang applied for financial support, under the ONR IFO Visiting Scientist Program (VSP), to attend and present papers at an international symposium. These VSPs have already been approved. Also, the Vice Director of same institute, Dr. Bui Hong Long, sent a request for funds to purchase two software products from a US company (Veri-Tech, Inc., MS) to enhance their analysis of coastal engineering.
