About the Institutes
About the Institutes
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is determined to set and lead an ambitious agenda for future ocean research to benefit society. In 2000, we established four Ocean Institutes encompassing areas of significant concern to the public and policymakers:
  • The Ocean and Climate Change Institute
    The Coastal Ocean Institute
    The Ocean Life Institute
    The Deep Ocean Exploration Institute
The Ocean Institutes’ goals are to close gaps that hinder scientific discoveries, and to convey discoveries expeditiously into the public realm.
To build bridges between different scientific disciplines, the Ocean Institutes will bring together the best minds across the full spectrum of oceanographic and other relevant fields—to catalyze innovative thinking and collaboration that can open up wholly new scientific vistas.
The Ocean Institutes’ concurrent mission is to shorten the lag time between acquiring knowledge and making it accessible to decision-makers who can use it to save lives, stimulate economic growth, and enhance our quality of life.

The Institute is a leader, serving as a resource to museums, school districts, teachers, and others who seek to enhance and strengthen an educational program. The curriculum crosses all traditional disciplines, but draws heavily from history and the sciences using content derived from the ocean.'
  • The Ocean Project - 'We are a new initiative that intends to create in people a lasting, measurable, top-of-mind awareness of the importance, value, and sensitivity of the oceans. We believe that the single greatest impediment to healthy and productive marine and coastal areas is the public's low level of ocean awareness. Through unprecedented collaboration among aquariums, zoos, science, technology, and natural history museums, and other educational institutions that together serve more than 100 million visitors each year, The Ocean Project aims to significantly increase the success of ocean conservation. We will also collaborate with local, regional, and national nonprofit conservation and environmental organizations to actively involve people in conservation activities in their communities and better connect them to the oceans.'

Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute (IOLR), Isaac Gertman Institute of oceanography and Fisheries (IORS), Vlado Dadic
    http://www.sea-search.net/roscop/content.htm
Cruise Summary Reports (CSR = former ROSCOPs) are the usual means for reporting on cruises or field experiments at sea. Traditionally, it is the Chief Scientist's obligation to submit a CSR to his/her National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) not later than two weeks after the cruise. This provides a first level inventory of measurements and samples collected at sea. The national CSRs are then forwarded to ICES for further compilation.
A password is needed for access by members
    Non members
supply their data in a different way. Within the Sea-Search project an innovative infrastructure has been developed and installed by the Deutsches Ozeanographisches Datenzentrum (DOD) to streamline the entering and updating of CSRs (CSRONLINE) and the searching and presenting of CSRs (CSRRETRIEVAL) by means of the internet.
This system has been tested by Sea-Search partners and was presented to the "ICES Working Group on Marine Data Management" (MDM) and to the IOC Committee on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE). Many comments for improvements were taken on board. After further testing, CSRONLINE and CSRRETRIEVAL are now fully operational and in use for maintaining and providing an up-to-date overview of CSRs of cruises in all marine waters around Europe and undertaken by European institutes. ENTERING AND MAINTENANCE OF CSRs The Sea-Search partners have adopted the new system and are coordinating the population of the CSR database with CSRs from their country. A number of partners (=members) have decided to use the CSRONLINE system and recommend their national chief scientists to enter their CSRs online. After login CSRONLINE offers a choice of blank fields or to use a previous report as template, thus providing a very effective entry. Filled out once, further CSRs are very simply updated by successive cruises or experiments. Very often just the dates have to be changed. After entry, the chief scientist receives an extra reference number and password by e-mail, which will allow him / her to update this specific CSR in a further session.

Objectives of Flow Cytometry Work in Marine Planktology Synechococcus ) and small eukaryotic algae in different oceanic provinces such as the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, the Indian Ocean and in Antarctic waters. In addition to abundance estimates, flow cytometry allows to quantify changes in cellular pigmentation (chlorophyll and phycoerythrin concentrations) of different distinguished phytoplankton sub-populations in response to the light or nutrient regime, either along a depth profile or in incubation experiments. Thus, information on the physiological status or response upon different treatments (changes in light conditions, nutrient additions) can be easily assessed by flow cytometry. In addition to abundance estimates, flow cytometry was used to study ecophysiological aspects of pico- and nanophytoplankton by application of specific fluorescent dyes and/or fluorogenic substrates:
