82. Limits To Knowledge New York Times Article
in different fields economics, oceanography, historical linguistics, When it comes to unknowability in historical linguistics, time is the enemy.
http://phe.rockefeller.edu/nyt_limits/
The following article appeared in the New York Times on 24 January 1998, page B7.
Scientists Are Confronting the Unknowable
By SARAH BOXER Many scientists are not fond of the idea that there are things in the universe beyond their grasp. They do not even like the word "unknowable" and prefer to use the term "intractable" instead. They consider the idea of unknowability an admission of defeat or an invitation for an attack on science. Recently, though, some scientists have made unknowability their business. Last summer the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation gave some $1.5 million in grants to researchers in different fields economics, oceanography, historical linguistics, computer science, population genetics, cell biology, anthropology and the history of science to take stock of what is known, unknown and unknowable. "We are all taught what is known, but we rarely learn about what is not known, and we almost never learn about the unknowable," Ralph Gomory, the president of the Sloan Foundation, wrote in Scientific American in 1995. "Because of such lessons, we grow up thinking more is known than actually is," and we do not recognize the unknowables for what they are. That is why the average gambler always loses to the average casino owner. "The gambler attempts to predict the individual and unpredictable spins of the roulette wheel," Gomory wrote, while "the owner concerns himself with the quite predictable average outcome."

Geology and Environmental Science Major
Faculty Dr. Assad Panah, professor of geology and environmental science aap@pitt.edu
Ph.D. in geology, University of Oklahoma, 1966
M.A. in geology, University of Texas, 1964
B.S. in natural sciences, University of Tehran, 1958 Edgar Hopkins, associate professor of geology emh1@pitt.edu Ph.D. University of Virginia, 1974 M.A. University of Texas, 1965 B.A. Northwestern University, 1962 Before coming to Pitt-Bradford in 1981, Dr. Ed Hopkins had switched back and forth between college teaching and petroleum exploration geology. He still consults part time to the petroleum and environmental industries. Hopkins' most prized possession is his sixty acre farm and Victorian house, which he rebuilt himself. He loves the outdoors. He has recently purchased land along a coastal marsh where he plans to build a house. His hobbies include saltwater fishing, wildlife and scenery painting, and landscaping/gardening. He also enjoys learning on the Internet. Dr. Hopkins teaches Physical Geology, Intro to Oceanography, Historical Geology, Geomorphology and Environmental Systems, Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, Air Photo/Remote Sensing, Advanced Petroleum Geology, and Coastal Zone Issues. He says that he likes Oceanography because he can include all the natural sciences: physical, chemical, biological, and geological. He likes the Coastal Issues and the Petroleum Geology courses because he gets to teach his specialty, coastal geology, in both of them.

Leaving aside its effect on beach parties, how do you think conditions on Earth would differ if our ocean consisted of ethyl alcohol?." To answer the ethyl alcohol portion of this question you will need values for the heat capacity of alcohol and water. We have discussed the heat capacity of water in class and thus you have that value. You can find the heat capacity of alcohol in biochemistry or biochemistry texts/references in the library. Be sure to properly site the reference you have used for the heat capacity of ethyl alcohol.

Seminar description
Seminar requirements

All students will be responsible for doing the assigned reading before each session of the seminar. In addition, students will take turns leading a session of the seminar by presenting an overview of the reading (including discussion of major themes, as well as critiques), and presenting questions for discussion based on book reviews and other relevant sources. There are also two writing assignments: a book review (4-5 double-spaced pages) of one of the books on the syllabus (due in class on Tuesday, 16 March ), and a research paper (25-35 double-spaced pages, due on Thursday, 13 May ). Research papers should be based on original research, drawing on unpublished primary sources (archival, interviews, etc.) where appropriate, in addition to relevant secondary sources.
Several books are available at the MIT COOP and are on reserve in Dewey Library. All other materials (marked with an asterisk below) will be posted on the course Stellar website.

(By Joel Genuth) I. INTRODUCTION
[Table of Contents]
This essay serves two overlapping purposes. First, it discusses those aspects of multi-institutional collaborations in space science that are most important to generating or locating documents of likely interest to historians of science and technology. In this sense, it provides the empirical perspective necessary for archival analysis and appraisal guidelines to be well grounded in the realities of recent research. Second, it offers observations on where the institutional framework of the government-funded, multi-institutional collaboration has seemed to affect (or leave undisturbed) the social relations and acquisition of expertise that are necessary for the pursuit of scientific research. In this sense it provides a preliminary perspective on social patterns and changes within a scientific community.

http://www.usgodae.org/
Welcome to the USGODAE Project
The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) is a practical demonstration of near-real-time, global ocean data assimilation that provides, regular, complete descriptions of the temperature, salinity and velocity structures of the ocean in support of operational oceanography, seasonal-to-decadal climate forecasts and analyses, and oceanographic research. The GODAE Monterey Server, sponsored mainly by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), is intended to be a principal node in the GODAE architecture. The server contains:
  • real-time and historical oceanographic observations
real-time and historical surface atmospheric forcing fields from Navy’s Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) and NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) suitable for driving GODAE ocean models
a full suite of real-time surface and upper-air fields from FNMOC’s Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) model sufficient to meet the needs of the Cooperative Opportunity for NCEP Data Using Internet data distribution Technology (CONDUIT) program
