Oceanography Class Quilt
Art - Grades (all)
Teachers: This is an activity that each student can work on independently and still have their artwork become part of a whole culminating art project about the ocean life learned in class. In addition, by having each student create a quilt square, it breaks the monotony of regular art drawings of animals/environments studied in class. The completed quilt can become a permanent display. Objective : Students will create and observe a collage of oceanography topics that will be placed on quilt tiles in a culmination art project to represent information learned. Materials:
  • fabric squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) fabric markers crayons (may be ironed in to make image permanent) tempera paint sewing needles and thread buttons, fabric, fringe scissors construction paper squares (1 ft. x 1 ft.) colored pencils
Activity:
  • The teacher must decided what medium of art the students will be working with.
    • a. Cutting and sewing images. c. Creating images with crayon and melted into the fabric with an iron. d. Use of construction paper instead of fabric and gluing images.

Marie José Langlade , IRD (a review from F. Rougerie and B. Wauthy in Atlas de Polynésie Française) Hydro-climatic features of the southern central Pacific: eddies (or "gyres") At inter-tropical latitudes, the trade winds generally cause the water masses in the Pacific Ocean to flow from east to west. These movements are known as the Equatorial Currents (EC). The water accumulating in the west then tends to flow back towards the east, taking routes where the winds are light or variable, and these reflux movements are known as the Equatorial Counter-Currents (ECC). South of The surface feature of the Polynesian ocean The thermo-haline profile observed in the South Pacific during the Austral summer and the Austral winter differs between the eastern and western regions. By mapping the salinity levels, it was possible to exactly determine the
