Services Moving Image Collection Timeline ... Other Sites The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Manuscript collections include the papers of many scientists. Among the holdings are the papers of oceanographers Roger Revelle, and John Isaacs; marine biologists Martin Johnson and Per Scholander, geophysicists Walter Munk and Russell Raitt; geologists H. William Menard, Robert Dietz, and Francis Shepard; and meteorologist Jerome Namias. The collection includes a series of letters written by Joseph Matkin, a seaman on H.M.S. CHALLENGER during its famous voyage of discovery (1872-1876). The collection includes the records of the American Tunaboat Association, which documents the tuna industry. The Archives also includes correspondence exchanged by founders E.W. Scripps, Ellen Browning Scripps, and William E. Ritter beginning in 1903 when they worked to establish a marine biological station in San Diego. Contact: SIO Archives, siolib2@sio.ucsd.edu

(site en anglais) by Jean-Luc Le Blanc Dear Friends, This site is the meeting point for all of you interested in the climate and the oceanography (physical, biological, geological, chemical, etc.) of the Indian Ocean. Its purpose is to include all the available information relevant to Indian Ocean studies in view to gather common interests.
Thank you for contributing with any information which could enable this goal to be achieved. Remember: this site is what you are going to make of it ! It's not only about information...it's also about communication Enjoy the journey ! The OCCAM project has developed two high resolution (1/4 and 1/8 degree) models of the World Ocean including the Arctic Ocean and marginal seas such as the Mediterranean. The OCCAM global ocean model
The OCCAM project has developed several high resolution models of the World Ocean - including the Arctic Ocean and marginal seas such as the Mediterranean. Some early results from our highest resolution (1/12th degree) global model are available in poster form . The information on this page refers chiefly to our earlier, 1/4 and 1/8th degree global models. The project is being carried out by researchers at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of East Anglia and Edinburgh. A selection of animation sequences from the model are available for viewing (using quicktime and mpeg formats). Two 4 Mb Quicktime movies which show the global ocean surface temperature field can be downloaded. More detailed mpeg sequences, each covering a smaller area, may be selected via the OCCAM area selector . Features of special interest are :
  • Eddies in the Agulhas retroflection and Mozambique Channel region
  • Loop current eddies in the Gulf of Mexico
  • Regular eddies in the Celebes Sea/Mindanao region
Data from the OCCAM model can be requested using the OCCAM data selector . This runs a JAVA applet which allows the user to request data from an area of interest. People using the facility should ensure that the current internet browser they are running will display JAVA applets. The system is currently under development so only a limited amount of data is available via this route.

an oceanography mission to monitor global ocean circulation, discover the tie between the oceans and atmosphere, improve global climate predictions, and monitor events such as El Ni±o conditions and ocean eddies. The Jason1 satellite carries a radar altimeter and it is a follow-on mission to the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission. It is joint mission between France and USA. The satellite will be launched in May 2000.

Primary Mission Achieved: Jason launch 3rd anniversary, December 7, 2004 This month the Jason mission satellite completes its primary three-year mission to measure the surface height of the worlds' oceans. Launched in December 2001, Jason now begins an extended mission to continue collecting detailed sea-surface topography data. Read the full story or check out the original launch images and videos See the CNES/AVISO tribute to Jason's success Jason-1 is the first follow-on to the highly successful TOPEX/Poseidon mission that measured ocean surface topography to an accuracy of 4.2 cm, enabled scientists to forecast the 1997-1998 , and improved understanding of ocean circulation and its effect of global climate. The joint NASA- CNES program will launch a French spacecraft on an American Delta II from an American base. Like TOPEX/Poseidon, the payload will include both American and French instruments.
