CORE's Hurricane Katrina Clearinghouse CORE is the Washington, D.C. based association of U.S. oceanographic research institutions, universities, laboratories, aquaria and industry. Our 83 members represent the nucleus of U.S. research and education about the ocean. The National Oceanographic Partnership Program is a cooperative effort among 15 federal agencies, academia and private industry to coordinate national oceanographic research and education programs. Since it was established in 1997, NOPP has invested $150 million to support over 90 ocean science research and education projects involving roughly 200 public and private institutions.
The Census of Marine Life is a decade-long, international research program assessing and explaining the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine organisms throughout the world's oceans.
Today there is no system to study the long-term physical, chemical and biological changes that take place within the ocean. The Ocean Research Interactive Observatory Networks (ORION) program is an NSF-sponsored effort to develop a network of seafloor observatories that can conduct the first real-time studies of these critical processes.

GEOHAB is a Plan for Co-ordinated Scientific Research and Co-operation to Develop International Capabilities for Assessment, Prediction and Mitigation The GEOHAB Strategy The approach of the GEOHAB Programme is comparative, from the cellular to the ecosystem level. GEOHAB fosters research that is interdisciplinary, focusing on the important interactions among biological, chemical, and physical processes. GEOHAB also fosters research that is multifaceted as the problems are complex and interactions and processes occur on a broad range of scales. Finally, GEOHAB research should be international in scope to encompass the global issues of HAB events.

Many birds we think of as Sierra birds are actually just making a short stop on a long journey from South America to the Boreal forests of Alaska. An innovative program in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks brings biologists from Central and South America north to contribute their knowledge of migratory species native to their homeland. After teaching and doing research in the Sierra, they take what they've learned home to further conservation efforts there. Local habitat is related to the broader geographic ranges of plants

I decided to cross Yosemite Creek last May. At 7:00 pm, Yosemite Falls looked rather intimidating (Figure 1), so I decided to wait until morning. However, at 7:00 am (Figure 2), it looked even worse! Was I alone in this observation? In the Gold Seeker My friend Boonie Lang laughed particularly hard when she heard about the Backpacker John Muir, with his adept skill at observation, was acutely aware of this phenomenon. Herodotus map of world, modified from The Challenger Reports (summary), 1895 Aristotle modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."
