    Oceanography - And Your Career
What is oceanography? Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science concerned with knowledge of the oceans and improvements in technology based on such knowledge. It incorporates many scientific fields that can be applied to the marine environmentphysics, geology, chemistry, biology, meteorology, geography, and geodesy. What do oceanographers do? There are two types of oceanographers in the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. The physical oceanographer studies the physical properties of the ocean and the relationship between the sea and the atmosphere. The geological oceanographer studies the topographic features, rocks, sediments, and physical composition of the ocean floor. The Command employs other types of marine scientists, such as geophysicists and physical science technicians who examine other aspects of the ocean environment. Where do oceanographers work? Because oceanography is the study of the ocean, most oceanographers spend a great deal of time at sea. The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command operates eight Military Sealift Command ships, conducting oceanographic survey operations worldwide. Some oceanographers work in ocean research at other organizations.

    Data Explorer Tutorials
Data Explorer (DX) is a software package for the visualization of data. Put simply, it turns those thousands of numbers in a data set into an image thus allowing an easier understanding of the information. NOTE : At the time of writing, this package was available within Dalhousie Physical Oceanography only on our IBM RISC System/6000 machines. Although Data Explorer is an easy package to learn to use, tutorials have been created that let you quickly learn some of the basics. Although this tutorial was designed for users at Dalhousie Physical Oceanography, it was be useful to other DX users as well. Videos on Creating Visual Programs and Data Importing and Module Writing are available. The IBM Visualization Data Explorer manuals ( User's Guide User's Reference , and Programmer's Reference ) are also available. Data Explorer has a extensive on-line help facility, which is basically a copy of the User's Reference . This can be accesses by pressing the middle mouse button on a module or any window. Sea Surface Height Click here for a QuickTime movie (about 35MB) The Center for Ocean - Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) has constructed a simulation of the devastating tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004. The tsunami is simulated using the Navy Coastal Ocean Model with a grid size of 1800x1120 and approximately 5km grid spacing. The simulation uses a semi-implicit time integration scheme with a 24 second time step, and requires less than 10 minutes on 20 processors of the FSU IBM SP4 Eclipse supercomputer.
