Ancient mariners surprise oceanographers
Satellite imaging techniques are shedding new light on an ancient map of the northeast Atlantic - the Carta Marina - published in 1539. When oceanographers from Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Rhode Island compared a large group of swirls, shown on the chart off the east coast of Iceland, with thermal images from an Earth observation satellite they found the swirls corresponded almost perfectly with the Iceland-Faroes Front - where the Gulf Stream meets cold waters coming down from the arctic. Below: Satellite thermal image of the Iceland-Faroe Front - where the Gulf Stream, in orange and yellow, meets cold waters form the Arctic - purple and blue The cartographer, Olaus Magnus, an exiled Swedish priest living in Italy, had a dislike of blank canvases and covered every available space with ink. But Professor Tom Rossby, from the University of Rhode Island, believes not every elaborate quill stroke was artistic licence. "Their location, size and spacing seem too deliberate to be purely artistic expression. Nowhere else on the chart do these whorls appear in such a systematic fashion.

Environmental Scientists and Geoscientists
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Work at remote field sites is common.
  • Federal, State, and local governments employ nearly one-half of all environmental scientists and geoscientists.
  • A bachelor’s degree is adequate for a few entry-level jobs, but a master’s degree is usually the minimum educational requirement; a Ph.D. degree is required for most high-level research positions.
  • Employment of geoscientists is expected to grow as fast as average, while environmental scientists and hydrologists will experience faster than average growth.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Environmental scientists and geoscientists use their knowledge of the physical makeup and history of the Earth to protect the environment; locate water, mineral, and energy resources; predict future geologic hazards; and offer advice on construction and land-use projects. Environmental scientists Many environmental scientists do work and have training that is similar to other physical or life scientists, but is applied to environmental areas. Many specialize in some specific area, such as environmental ecology and conservation, environmental chemistry, environmental biology, or fisheries science. Most environmental scientists are further classified by the specific activity they perform (although recent advances in the understanding of basic life processes within the ecosystem have blurred some traditional classifications). For example

Oceanographers collect 1.5-million-year record of climate change in Africa
URI oceanographers and colleagues from four other universities probed the ancient sediments beneath Lake Malawi in East Africa last winter and recovered sediment samples that provide up to 1.5 million years of information about how climate in Africa has changed - the longest continuous record of such data ever collected from that continent. The challenging expedition was managed by Kate Moran, associate professor of oceanography and ocean engineering, and included Professor John King and graduate students Meghan Paulson, Nathan Vinhateiro and Chip Heil. Results from the research will also contribute to a better understanding of African climate and improved weather predictions in this region of recurring drought, famine and human suffering. The project has the added benefit of recovering an archive of environmental change that occurred in concert with human evolution in East Africa.

Oceanographers studying the effects of algal blooms on Narragansett Bay ecology
Graduate School of Oceanography biological oceanographers Ted Smayda and David Borkman have received a $131,800 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to analyze the dynamics, variability, and patterns of harmful algal blooms and red tides in Narragansett Bay. The study will include analysis of data from weekly measurements in lower Narragansett Bay conducted between 1959 and 1996, as well as field observations, laboratory analysis, and detailed information on key species. The incidence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is on the rise. They are now appearing in regions previously free from such events, and toxic outbreaks of species once considered benign are threatening marine life, shellfish, and humans. Research on algal blooms is difficult to conduct because the blooms are unpredictable and swift, often disappearing so fast that meaningful field studies are impossible.

... Observe, understand, predict El Niño puts oceanographers to the test The chain of disasters that El Niño left in its wake in 1997 and 1998—drought, flooding, storms and more besides—is still fresh in the memory.
Lima, the Peruvian capital, was hit first by mudslides from the foothills of the Andes. Then it was the turn of 18 of Ecuador’s 21 provinces to feel the effects.
Yet across the globe, in Papua New Guinea, soils made rock hard by drought left one quarter of the population with nothing to eat but roots.
Flood in Peru
El Niño is a climatic phenomenon that regularly turns up off the coast of Peru. The 1997-98 event was the most severe of the century, claiming thousands of lives and leaving a trail of destruction costing several billion euros.
Drought in Papua New Guinea
El Niño returned in July 2002, but this time it was much milder. Since the “El Niño of the century”, the scientific community has learned a great deal more about the phenomenon. Today, space-based and terrestrial systems are helping to forecast El Niño and pave the way for climate prediction.

Space oceanography
Nearly 50 years after the launch of the first artificial satellite, space research has contributed significantly to changing our vision of the Earth and the far universe. Progress in the means of observation, in particular from space, has played a central role in furthering our knowledge of planet Earth, leading to an improved understanding of the multi-scale processes in the atmosphere, ocean and biosphere. Increased power of computing systems initially allowed for the development of numerical weather prediction, then of ocean general circulation models. Like meteorologists before them, oceanographers are now on their way to establishing a network of operational forecast centres at global, regional or local scales. This is the challenge of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), a joint program of the IOC, the WMO, and of their regional components like Euro-GOOS, MedGOOS, and GOOS-Africa.
Cospar initiative
COSPAR's programme of Capacity Building Workshops is now in its fifth year. Workshops on Xray astronomy have been held in Brazil (2001), India (2003), and South Africa (2004), and one on magnetospheric physics was organized in China (2004).

This is a journal of sorts about how I have adapted my Mac OS X machine to work with the GNU and Unixy tools which I consider standard for earth sciences. All of this stuff works natively under Linux, and therefore is quite portable to Darwin systems. There is also a minimal discussion of some of the standard add-ons and widgets that are offered for OS X.

Bigelow Women Oceanographers
Daniel Fayen

Recently two women research scientists at Bigelow Dr. Patricia "Patty" Matrai and Cindy Pilskaln were recognized for their achievements in "Oceanography" the marine sciences' most prestigious journal. The March 2005 (Vol.18, #1) issue of "Oceanography" was a special issue devoted to the accomplishments made by women marine scientists throughout the world. The catalyst of the magazine's focus on women's' achievements in marine scientists was the editor of "Oceanography" magazine Ellen S. Kappel's astonishment at the dearth of women authors in upcoming issues. Kappel's belief in devoting an entire issue to women oceanographers was that reading the autobiographical sketches of Bigelow's Matrai and Pilskaln, along with roughly 150 others, would help identify barriers to career advancement encountered by women in oceanography. She also hoped readers would be inspired and discussion might ensue, in light of the issue, to address ways to narrow the gender gap existing in the oceanographic sciences (currently 23 per-cent of all marine scientists an academia and employed in research are women according to a 2002 National Science Foundation poll). Matrai is a senior research scientist at Bigelow, and has been at the McKown Point facility since 1995. A native of Chile, Matrai said, "I became interested in oceanography initially for very unscientific reasonsI loved the beach and didn't want to be stuck inside. I was also inspired by a friend of my parents who was into chemical engineering.
