I have a piece of coursework to write on 1984, I have chossen to write about the portrayal of women and their views. It's driving me crazy, can anyone help?!?!? Please!!! :flare: Posted By at Thu 22 Sep 2005, 5:24 AM in 4 Replies
Ok, so we've had the arguments over wheter or not this could happen, to what extent it already has ya da ya da (I do like Lynn Truss' connection between NewSpeak and TxtSpeak!!). What I wanted to ask is does anyone see the possible introduction of 'identity cards' into the British Isles as a lean towards the autocratic, totalitarian power held by B-B? I'm not sure if these cards have already been introduced into other countries or what; they have all your details contained on them and they have some kind of genetic coding in them too - fingerprint or iris scan detail. The idea is that there would be a fine for not being able to produce this card when asked for it. Is this not wrong? Is it not an intrusion, whilst not on the same scale as telescreens, of citizens' lives? Just a thought.

FIELDWORK Fieldwork is a central activity of archaeology and anthropology, and to a lesser extent of linguistics. It is 'in the field' that much research takes place. As James Clifford has argued recently, for anthropology fieldwork is a mark of disciplinary distinction (1997:89), although the notion of what 'the field' is, has altered so that it is 'conceived less as a discrete, other place than as a set of embodied research practices, patterns of discretion, of professional distance, of coming and going' (1997:90). As a methodology, fieldwork has come under considerable theoretical and political scrutiny within anthropology, and is beginning to be debated within archaeology. Only a few ni-Vanuatu have entered into the written conversation of academia. In general they have done so through participation in a number of edited volumes.2 Authors such as Selwyn Arutangai (1987, 1995) have contributed a number of articles, mostly concerning issues of land ownership and political development, to such volumes. A number of niVanuatu contributed articles about the 1991 general election to Howard van Trease's volume Melanesian politics: stael blong Vanuatu (1995). Grace Molisa has published a number of small books of various kinds, including poetry (1983, 1989) and other material, such as reports from the First National Women's Festival (Molisa n.d. [ 1990]).

by Messenger Wednesday June 15, 2005 at 07:28 PM
author: wsws A report released June 9 by the FBI's Office of the Inspector General raises new questions about the role of the US government in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The internal FBI study provides several important revelations about how US intelligence agencies ignored and even suppressed warnings in the period leading up to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that killed nearly 3,000 people. By Patrick Martin
    15 June 2005
Press accounts published within hours of the report?s release gave a very distorted picture of the document, which runs to more than 400 pages. No follow-up reports, based on a thorough study of the text, have yet appeared in the mass media.
The initial media commentary invariably voiced the now-standard claim that the FBI and CIA were guilty of a "failure to connect the dots," due to bureaucratic lethargy, individual incompetence, inter-agency rivalries, even poorly performing software systems. This presentation of events is utterly unserious.
The US intelligence apparatus is the most powerful instrument for spying in the world, not a group of Keystone Cops. If it ignored warnings and suppressed information, a legitimate presumption is that it did so willfully. The question must be posed: did one or more agencies or high-level officials provide protection for known Al Qaeda associates who ultimately participated in the hijack-bombings?

Ratings agency bullish on Aussie growth

Beers said the federal budget released in May showed that despite expectations of a deficit in the current fiscal year, the outlook for surpluses remained and that this boded well for Australia's sovereign ratings.
He said Australia's AA-plus foreign-currency credit rating was constrained by the private sector's heavy external indebtedness. Beers said this dependency exposed the national economy and the federal government to shifts in foreign investor sentiment.
"The concerning factor here continues to be the private sector's high external leverage," he said. "We think that is important from a sovereign perspective because it means the balance of payments remains vulnerable to shifts in investor sentiment, and that is a slight negative from the government's credit story, in our view."
"The government enjoys significant fiscal flexibility as a result of policies that have reduced government debt to levels which are low even for countries rated AAA," Beers said.
He noted that the continued focus for Australia's ratings would be fiscal prudence by both the federal government and the states, but he also said a decline in the private external debt could lead to an upgrade of the foreign-currency rating in the future.
