A Directory of Wetlands in Oceania TUVALU Area: 25.11 sq.km. Population: Tuvalu, formerly the Ellice Islands, comprises a 570 km chain of nine atoll systems and raised coral islands in the southwest Pacific between 5° and 1l°S and 176° and 180°E. The islands lie about 1,050 km north of Fiji. Funafuti (254 ha), Nukufetau (307 ha), Nukulaelae (166 ha), Nanumea (361 ha) and Nui (337 ha) are atolls, generally with narrow strips of land in the east and reefs with scattered islets in the west. Niutao (226 ha), Nanumanga (310 ha) and Niulakita (41 ha) are limestone islands with enclosed brackish to saline lagoons. Vaitupu (509 ha) is intermediate in type, with two virtually land-locked internal lagoons. The maximum elevation is about 4 m above sea level. The climate is humid tropical, with no marked seasonal variations. Temperatures average about 28°C. The average annual rainfall varies from about 2,800 mm to 3,600 mm, depending on the island. Trade winds from the east moderate conditions for much of the year. The islands are occasionally affected by hurricanes, the hurricane season being from October to March. The marine systems have recently been described by UNEP/IUCN (1988). The dominant terrestrial vegetation is atoll/beach scrub, and there is no forest on the islands. Small stands of mangrove occur on at least five of the islands. Some 86 vascular plants have been recorded, of which 44 are indigenous, but none is endemic. One endemic species of endodontid snail and four endemic species of charopid snail have been described, but their present status is unknown (Pearsall, 1991). Sea-birds have traditionally been harvested for food, and as a consequence, populations are rather low. However, there are colonies of most of the common species of terns, noddies and boobies on relatively undisturbed islets. The investigation of suitable islets for sea-bird protection has been identified as a priority (Hay, 1985; TCSP, 1990).

The powers of the Commonwealth are specifically defined in the Constitution, and the residual powers remain with the states.
Australia is an independent nation within the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state and since 1973 has been officially styled "Queen of Australia." The Queen is represented throughout Australia by a governor general and in each state by a governor.
Each state is headed by a premier, who is the leader of the party with a majority or a working minority in the lower house of the state legislature. Australia also has two self-governing territories, the Australian Capital Territory (where Canberra is located) and the Northern Territory, with political systems similar to those of the states. The Territories are headed by Chief Ministers who are the leader of the party with a majority or a working minority in the state legislature.
At the apex of the court system is the High Court of Australia. It has general appellate jurisdiction over all other federal and state courts and possesses the power of constitutional review.

I have to admit that I was tempted to search for information about the Solomon Islands because of its name. My mother used to tell me tales about King Solomon's wisdom and I loved them.
The whole thing started when I was told that there are still traditional tribes there. I had never heard about the Solomon Islands before we started working on this Oceania Project, but I wanted to learn new things. What I found was truly amazing.... CONTENTS Geography

SOME SOLOMON ISLAND LINKS GEOGRAPHY The Solomon Islands are located in the South Pacific, just Northeast of Australia, between Papua and Vanuatu and constitute an independent state within the British Commonwealth. The Solomon Islands are a chain of seven large and many smaller islands from northwest to southeast over 1,500 km. They are volcanic, mountainous, and heavily forested. The area (28900 square km) is divided into nine provinces: Guadalcanal (5,302 sq km) is the biggest island, with 49,000 inhabitants. Here we find the highest mountain in the country, Popomanasiu (2,440m). The government and most industry and commerce are also located here.

    What is SOS?
Students for an Orwellian Society (SOS) is a nationwide student group. Although SOS has always been a nationwide student group, there is evidence to suggest that it first appeared at Columbia University . The mission of SOS is to promote the vision of a society based upon the principles of Ingsoc , first articulated by George Orwell in his prophetic novel, As an Oceania-wide organization, SOS has a number of local chapters. For a partial listing, see our contact section.
    George Orwell
    Successes
As to be expected, SOS has been quite successful. Since the events of 11 September, we have been able to convince a number of figures in national and local politics to help forward our aims. How could they do otherwise? Our successes can be shown to fit into the three major ideals of Ingsoc as expressed by Orwell:
    War Is Peace

Progressing the Pathways to Prevention Project in Redfern and Waterloo

    Appendix 3
The source of the information in this profile is First Release Processing of the 2001 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the 2016 (Redfern) and 2017 (Waterloo) postcodes. The two inner Sydney suburbs of Redfern and Waterloo are part of the South Sydney Local Government Area (LGA) and lie just to the south of the Central Business District. Redfern covers 1.2 square kilometres, while Waterloo is larger at 1.9 square kilometres. While each has its distinct identity, the two neighbouring suburbs are often coupled for public policy purposes. Both have long been known as economically disadvantaged areas. Research by Professor Tony Vinson in 1999 found that, of the 578 postcode areas in NSW he studied, Waterloo ranked 22 in terms of disadvantage (one of only two urban postcodes in the top 30), and Redfern ranked 189. The 2001 census data indicates that the lower ranking of Redfern is likely to be related to its higher proportion of private housing which has made it possible for parts of the suburb to be 'gentrified' as higher income people buy-up properties close to the city centre.
    Population
Despite its smaller area, Redfern is the more densely populated. The 2001 census shows a total of:
