Question: What are the characteristics of your animal that makes it interesting to you? Tasks: I feel like we're really doing a great job on our project. How about you? For this section we need to:
  • Let's use the links that I have sent to explore our animal
    • How big is it? How fast is it? What does it eat? How does it get it's food? How does it defend itself? How does it treat it's young? Are the actions of humans harming this animal? What can we do to help?
We'll then have to each draw a picture of our animal in action.

What will climate change mean for life in the ocean?
The United Nations’ Climate Change Panel is not in doubt that the world in the process of warming up. But what will be the consequences for life in our marine region if prophecies of this sort are fulfilled? If looks as though our fisheries will be faced with major changes. The climate symposium which is being held in Bergen this week will put a number of important problems in the limelight. Feature article in Bergens Tidende, May 10, 2004
by Harald Loeng, Head of the Oceanography and Climate Research Group, Institute of Marine Research Translation: Hugh Allen
Seals and polar bears will be most seriously affected by the climatic changes, since they are dependent on ice conditions. Nowadays, we are aware that climatic changes are of the greatest importance for the marine ecosystem, something that has been confirmed by a huge number of scientific reports. Today, the challenge lies in quantifying the relationships involved so that we can make use of this knowledge to estimate how fish stocks will develop in the future. Empty seas “caused by Godlessness”
Changes in the availability of fish have been a matter of concern to Norwegians for hundreds of years. In his tract “On Animals, Fish, Birds and Trees in Norway”, Peder Claussön Friis claimed that “The Lord also reduced the herring fishery the following year, and has since taken it completely away from us, so that in this year 1599 the herring have not arrived at all”. According to Friis, this was due to the Godlessness of the fishermen, their thieving, unfaithfulness, drinking and fighting. But by the second half of the 19th century both fishermen and scientists had realised that environmental factors and sea temperature had significant influences on the Lofoten fishery.

"Ocean color" refers primarily to the measurement of the green pigment called chlorophyll, which is contained in phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are free-floating plants that are the foundation of the ocean's food chain.

Located in a strategic position at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, the Comoro Islands once played a major role in a thriving world economy of the western Indian Ocean . The archipelago arose from the seabed of the western Indian Ocean as the result of volcanic activity. The four major islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Moheli), Nzwani (Anjouan), and Maore (Mayotte), are of varying age with distinct topograhical characteristics. Mayotte, the oldest of the islands, is closest to Madagascar and is highly eroded with slow, meandering streams. Ngazidja, the youngest of the islands is closest to Africa and has a massive, volcano . Seismic activity continues today on this island and experts have been concerned that a very violent eruption may occur in the near future. Beaches served as landing areas for traditional sailing vessels and martime trade is mentioned in ancient documents. Domoni, located on the eastern shore of the island of Nzwani(Anjouan), for example, with several beaches nearby was a major trading center in the fifteenth century. Ships traveled to Africa and Asia with archaeological materials providing evidence that trade existed between the community and places as far away as Japan. Since the end of the fifteenth century, many European and American sailors visited the islands. These included whalers, merchants, and pirates, such as the infamous

The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami hits Thailand The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake , known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake , was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) on December 26 . The earthquake generated a tsunami that killed more than 150,000 people, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history . Because the massive destruction was created directly by the following tsunami, the disaster is also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami Various values were given for the magnitude of the earthquake, ranging from 9.0 to 9.3 (which would make it the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph ), though authoritative estimates now put the magnitude at 9.15. In May 2005 , scientists reported that the earthquake itself lasted nearly ten minutes when most major earthquakes last no more than a few seconds; it caused the entire planet to vibrate at least a few centimetres. (CNN) It also triggered earthquakes elsewhere, as far away as

Carbon Dioxide Emissions May Harm Ocean Life Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version USA: July 16, 2004
WASHINGTON - The world's oceans have absorbed nearly half of the carbon dioxide emitted by humans during the last 200 years, creating potential long-term challenges for corals and free-swimming algae, according to two studies released yesterday.
An international team of scientists found that oceans have taken in about 118 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide from human activities between 1800 and 1994, accounting for nearly a third of their long-term carrying capacity. These findings could pose a long-term risk for marine organisms, such as corals, which have greater difficulty in forming their outer shells as carbon dioxide levels increase, researchers found.
