NASA satellite data capture a big climate effect on tiny ocean life
June 23, 2005 El Niño and La Niña play with the populations of microscopic ocean plants called phytoplankton. That's what scientists have found using NASA satellite data and a computer model. Phytoplankton are the base of the marine food chain, providing food for little sea animals called zooplankton, which in turn feed fish and other creatures. Any change in phytoplankton numbers alters the ocean food chain.

MAUI OCEAN CENTER OFFERS AN INSPIRING GLIMPSE OF HAWAI'I'S UNIQUE UNDERSEA WORLD Over 2,000 miles from any continent or major island group, the Hawaiian archipelago is one of the most isolated places on Earth. In nature's kingdom, the journey to these tropical islands - like settlers of a new frontier - presented both opportunities and perils. For those who survived the arduous journey - mostly by drifting on the ocean's currents - these species have evolved into a unique and wondrous biota. Today, nearly one-third of Hawai'i's marine life can be found nowhere else in the world.
MA'ALAEA, MAUI, HI - Since Coral World International opened its $20-million Maui Ocean Center in March 1998, this state-of-the-art facility has lured visitors from around the globe fascinated with experiencing a glimpse of Hawai'i's undersea world. Aptly named "The Hawaiian Aquarium," this state-of-the-art marine park on the island of Maui is the only facility in the world dedicated to fostering understanding, wonder, and respect for Hawaii's marine life. Here, visitors can see spectacular live coral displays (the largest collection in the nation), marvel at elusive garden eels and majestic lionfish, muse at the colorful Hawaiian wrasse, enjoy playful swimming displays by Hawai'i's beloved green sea turtles and awe at close encounters with sharks, rays and more - while learning about Hawai'i's natural history and cultural heritage.

Marine biology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Marine biology is the study of animal and plant life within waterbound ecosystems . Given that in biology many phyla families and genera have some species that live in the sea and others that live on land, marine biology deals with those species in which life is spent only (or mainly) in the water, thus its classification is based on the environment rather than on taxonomy

Overview
Marine biology covers a great deal, from the microscopic plankton , including femtoplankton as small as 0.02 micrometers, and together with phytoplankton , hugely important as the primary producers of the sea, to the huge cetaceans (or whales) which reach up to a reported 33 meters (109 feet) in length. The habitats included by investigation in marine biology include everything from the tiny layers of surface water in which organisms and abiotic items may be trapped in surface tension between the ocean and atmosphere, to the depths of the abyssal trenches, sometimes 10,000 meters or more beneath the surface of the ocean. Along the way, habitats such as coral reefs kelp forests tidepools , muddy, sandy, and rocky bottoms, and the open ocean (pelagic) zone, where solid objects are rare and the surface of the water is the only visible boundary.

A review of the article, "The Ocean's Invisible Forest," by Paul G. Falkowski. 708 words ( approx. 2.8 pages ), 1 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
    Abstract
This paper examines how the worldwide problems of global warming are not new to the average American citizen and how attempting to control them through managed forestry of the ocean would be a new and interesting topic of discussion. It looks at how this type of scientific exploration is the topic of the article, "The Ocean's Invisible Forest," by Paul G. Falkowski in the August, 2002, issue of "Scientific American".
    From the Paper:
"Phytoplankton, as well as all land dwelling plants, use the energy in sunlight to convert CO2 into organic matter. This process releases oxygen into the atmosphere which makes possible all animal life on Earth. This is known as primary production. Until recently it was unknown just how great the productivity of phytoplankton actually was. In 1997 NASA launched the Sea Wide Field Sensor (SeaWiFS). This was the first satellite that was capable of monitoring phytoplankton populations on a global level every week. By 1998 it was realized that phytoplankton are responsible for incorporating 45 to 50 billion metric tons of inorganic carbon into their cells."

1998 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE OCEAN:
    MESSAGE OF UNESCO DIRECTOR-GENERAL
Also following the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, and increasingly alarmed by such phenomena as marine pollution, harmful algal blooms, sea level change linked to global warming, and worldwide droughts and floods thought to be related to the El Niño phenomenon, Member States of the United Nations and its specialized agencies have set up various interagency cooperative programmes, such as the Global Ocean Observing System, to generate and exchange data and forecasts on the oceans. At least thirty conferences on marine issues, many publications and over a dozen research and training cruises are planned by Member States and will be taking place all over the world. A special United Nations series of postage stamps will be issued in May 1998. Thus far, more than twenty Member States have decided to issue national postage stamps for the International Year of the Ocean. A special message by Federico Mayor, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of the launch of the International Year of the Ocean, follows:

    INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE OCEAN
    Internet Resources for School Libraries
UNESCO has declared 1998 to be the International Year of the Ocean. UNESCO says that "protection starts with awareness", and so it follows that "people must be informed about the oceans" hence the declaration of this special year. Oceans affect all life on this planet; whether or not our home country is washed by an ocean, the oceans are important for us all. Many schools plan and teach special units of study related to the theme for each named year. When this happens, the school librarian is often asked to locate and acquire reources for these curriculum units. This page provides links to Internet (and print) resources related to the ocean. They have been selected from among the many on the Internet, because of their potential usefulness in the school setting. The range is wide, from literary sites to news, to scientific information, and resources created specifically for schools. Attempts have been made to include Web pages and other resources from different countries, and the page is very much "under development".
    OCEAN 98
OCEAN 98 is a special programme of UNESCO in cooperation with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the Water Branch of UNEP. This site has news and current information, ocean facts and statistics, information about scientific and other expeditions, educational information, a description of the OCEAN 98 programme, a schedule of activities and events, and some "infotainment" (including downloadable screensavers, competitions, and a wall calendar).
