The cover of the Marine Protected Areas Symposium Proceedings, a 68 page booklet that included the program, abstracts, participants and related links. Introduction and Summary
by Laurence P. Madin
Director of the Ocean Life Institute Introduction
As part of this national dialogue, the Ocean Life Institute of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution hosted this Symposium on Marine Protected Areas on August 27-29, 2001. The meeting was the second in our series called “Fisheries, Oceanography and Society”, which is intended to explore various aspects of fisheries as they affect marine science, conservation, economics and social structure. The aim of the current symposium was to provide a broad view of current thinking about marine protected areas. This included the perspectives of various stakeholder groups, some favorable to MPAs and some with reservations. The meeting also placed emphasis on the scientific theory and practice that are fundamental to the rational planning and management of reserves in varied ocean environments. Most of the discussion of MPAs in this meeting was about no-take reserves, at least for some species.

Ocean Ecosystems Only Altered Following Two Great Mass Extinctions; Unexpectedly Stable Over Hundreds Of Millions Of Years
(Blacksburg, Va., May 14, 2002) Marine life had to re-evolve after two major extinctions in order for shrimp and whales and other sea life as we know it to come into being. But what is remarkable, according to an article published in the May 14, 2002 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), is not that marine life recovered from two mass extinctions, but that marine ecosystems have maintained very stable structure over the last 450 million years and only changed noticeably in the recovery from these two great extinctions. If I was asked to recommend one book for the reader to be informed about the oceans of this planet and creatures that live in it, this is the book I would pick. It is absolutely packed full of facts with both colour and excellent black and white illustrations and diagrams. It is a comprehensive introduction and features the life below and above (sea birds) the waves. This well written reference book is extremely good value. Encyclopaedia Britannica CD 97
CD-ROM (Now superseded by the even better 1999 update with illustrations) The reader may be surprised to find a review of this reputable general encyclopaedia in a magazine on marine life. However, if you or your School Library can afford it, this is the best source of accurate information on oceans and marine life, and much more, including information of palaeontology and prehistoric reptiles. The text is the same as the book volumes. It might be best to wait for the planned upgrades. Meanwhile, Microsoft Encarta 97 also provides some good information on the oceans and marine life and the sequence and explanation on Tides is worth looking at and listening to. The Britannica search methods are brilliant and can use the Boolean system. Encarta 97 is just not in the same league.

Hydrothermal vents, fractures in the sea floor that spew sulphur compounds, support the only complex ecosystem known to run on chemicals, rather than energy from the sun. Gigantic tubeworms and mussels thrive in densities of up to 65 pounds per square foot around vents.

    Dangerous Sea Animals
  • Dangerous Sea Animals We are very interested in these deadly animals, and we want to know about their distribution around northern Australia, because we are just about ready to make our transit from Male, Maldives to Darwin, Australia. The coastal sea inside the barrier reef around Darwin is home to the sea wasp, the Portuguese man-o-war, the blue-ringed octopus, and some pretty nasty salt- water crocodiles.

    Ocean Life Zones
  • Ocean The neritic zone, the open water region over the continental shelf, is the most productive area of the ocean. In the epipelagic, or uppermost zone of the open ocean, phytoplankton (plant plankton) and zooplankton (animal plankton) are concentrated, forming the base of the marine food chain.

    International Year of the Ocean

The Ocean is vital to life on earth. From the life-giving rain that nourishes crops, to life-saving medicines; from the fish that come from the ocean floor, to the goods that are transported on the sea's surface - the ocean plays a role in your life in some way every day. In recognition of the importance of the marine environment, the United Nations has declared 1998 the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO). This designation provides individual organizations and governments with an important opportunity to raise public awareness and understanding of the ocean and related issues.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ecologists know that when it comes to habitats, size matters, and now a new study finds that contrary to earlier beliefs, that maxim holds true right down to the tiny plants at the bottom of many oceanic and freshwater food chains. Earlier studies have suggested that the diversity-habitat size rule may not hold true for one of the most ubiquitous species in the world: phytoplankton, a group of microscopic algae afloat in the world's oceans, seas and lakes. In contrast, the new study demonstrates that the range of phytoplankton species in an ecosystem increases with ecosystem size according to a general mathematical rule. The study also finds that this holds true whether the system is a laboratory test tube or an ocean. The researchers analyzed pre-existing scientific data on phytoplankton species in 142 oceans, lakes and natural ponds worldwide, ranging from a few square inches to millions of square miles, and from 239 laboratory test tubes, flasks and beakers. They found that not only did a correlation between species diversity and habitat area exist for natural water bodies like lakes and oceans, but that an identical pattern exists for experimental ecosystems such as test tubes and laboratory tanks.
