People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suffer intensely from recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions), which they feel they cannot control. Rituals such as handwashing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these rituals, however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety. Left untreated, obsessions and the need to perform rituals can take over a person's life. OCD is often a chronic, relapsing illness. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and by industry, effective treatments have been developed to help people with OCD.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a common mental health problem. The usual treatments are antidepressant medication, behaviour therapy, or both. Symptoms can often be much improved with treatment.
What is obsessive compulsive disorder? Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition where you have recurring obsessions, compulsions, or both. Obsessions
These are unpleasant thoughts, images, or urges that keep coming into your mind. Obsessions are not simply worries about your life problems. Common obsessions include:
  • fears about contamination with dirt, germs, etc.
  • worries about doors being unlocked, fires left on, causing harm to someone, etc.
  • intrusive thoughts or images of swearing, blasphemy, sex, someone being harmed, etc.
  • fear of making a mistake or behaving badly.
  • a need for exactness in how you order or arrange things.
These are just examples. Obsessions can be about all sorts of things. Obsessive thoughts can make you feel very anxious or disgusted. You normally try to ignore or suppress obsessive thoughts. For example, you may try to think other thoughts to 'neutralise' the obsession. Compulsions
These are thoughts or actions that you feel you must do or repeat. Usually the compulsive act is in response to an obsession. A compulsion is a way of trying to deal with the distress or anxiety caused by an obsession.

... Did You Know? Shop For Books With Amazon The Singing Butler Jack Vettriano Buy From Art.com Introduction Hello and welcome to the All Info About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder site. This illness is often referred as "OCD", so when I mention "OCD" you will know that I am talking about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. My name is Kathy Brewis and I will be your tour guide for this site. What is OCD? The terms "obsessive" and "compulsion" are used very loosely in our language. There is a perfume called Obsession. You also have obsessed fans stalking movie stars or have people describe their compulsive eating. Excessive drinking, compulsive gambling, compulsive sexual activity, lying, stalking, shopping, stealing and firesetting have all become associated in the mind of the public as OCD. This, however, is not true. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a severe form of an anxiety disorder. OCD is characterized as recurrent unwanted thoughts and/repetitive behaviors. Screening for OCD There are many sites on the Internet where you can go and take a screening test for OCD. These self-tests are a good way to determine whether you may have a problem with OCD. Don't go solely by the test itself.Take the online test and print out the results. On your next visit to your doctor take the results with you and show them to your doctor. Only a doctor can determine whether or not you have OCD.
