Ayn Rand (1905-1982), a best-selling novelist and world-renowned philosopher, deductively developed a unique philosophical system called Objectivism which has affected many lives over the last half century. This article offers an introduction to her systematic vision by presenting her essential ideas in a logical, accessible manner. This should contribute toward the appreciation of Rand's profoundly original philosophical system. The specific purpose of this paper is to introduce, logically rearrange, and clarify through rewording the ideas scattered throughout her essays, lectures, and novels, especially Atlas Shrugged (1957), her masterwork of logic that most completely expounds her exhaustive, fully-integrated, philosophy. Written from the viewpoint of a generalist in economics, philosophy, and the social sciences, this paper is meant to provide a background for readers who wish to study specialized aspects of Rand's philosophy in greater detail.
The Essence of Objectivism
A is A: Deriving the "Ought" from the "Is"

Rand's defense of the above positions begins with the premise that existence exists – A is A. Her philosophy, Objectivism, contends that the universe has existed eternally and repudiates the idea of its creation by a rational, omnipotent God.

My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.
    — Ayn Rand, from her Appendix to Atlas Shrugged Objectivism is not a religion; it is a philosophy and ethical system. " Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982) was a multi-talented author who wrote such classic novels as 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged,' and, through scores of nonfiction essays, laid the foundations for an original system of thought called Objectivism. " The Objectivist Center describes Objectivism as follows: In her novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , and in nonfiction works such as Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, Ayn Rand forged a systematic philosophy of reason and freedom. Rand was a passionate individualist. She wrote in praise of " the men of unborrowed vision, " who live by the judgment of their own minds, willing to stand alone against tradition and popular opinion. Her philosophy of Objectivism rejects the ethics of self-sacrifice and renunciation. She urged men to hold themselves and their lives as their highest values, and to live by the code of the free individual: self-reliance, integrity, rationality, productive effort.

Objectivist philosophers may take me to task for claiming that Objectivism appears to be simply another form of philosophical Materialism. Dr. Leonard Peikoff, the current and leading spokesman for the Objectivist movement, explicitly denies that Objectivists are Materialists. (See p. 33 in his Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand I challenge what Peikoff says. Objectivist metaphysics (what there is of it) seems to fall quite comfortably into the Materialistic camp. Consider the following description of Materialism by a contemporary Materialist philosopher:

What Art Is : The Esthetic Theory of Ayn Rand by Louise Torres Michelle Marder Kamhi Cultural icon Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was known as much for her philosophy as for her fiction. Her original theory of esthetics, which attacks many "masterpieces" of modernist art, is as combative and controversial as any of her work, but until now has received little serious scrutiny. In What Art Is , the authors demonstrate that Rand's ideas are supported by evidence from other academic fields. What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is. Though many people are skeptical about the alleged new art forms that have proliferated since the early twentieth century, today's critics claim that all such work, however incomprehensible, is art. A groundbreaking alternative to this view is provided by philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand (1905 1982). Best known as the author of

Objectivism: Assorted Commentary Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism, purports to offer at least the outlines of a complete philosophical system. In my view, its importance is more social and cultural than philosophical. However, I have been interested in it for its philosophical content and, over the last several years, have written a number of pieces, usually for one Objectivist forum or another, on the ideas and arguments Rand and those influenced by her have presented. What is Objectivism? Note:
The following overview of Objectivism is drawn largely from a lecture given by objectivist philosopher Leonard Peikoff. The lecture can be viewed at the Ayn Rand Institute's web site for free by clicking here Objectivism is the philosophy of Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum, more widely known by her pen-name, Ayn Rand ( Born: February 2, 1905 - St. Petersburg, Russia; Died: March 6, 1982 - New York, New York ). Often wrongly confused with libertarian politics, Objectivist political philosophy is in fact different and, accordingly, is not included in Mondo Politico's libertarian Learning Centre Ayn Rand was as much an advocate of philosophy in general as she was of Objectivism in particular. She made the point that, whether you have chosen to study philosophy or not, everyone holds beliefs consciously or unconsciously that give rise to, at least, an implicit or subconscious set of principles. As Ayn Rand put it: "You have no choice about the necessity to integrate your observations, your experiences, your knowledge into abstract ideas, i.e., into principles. Your only choice is whether these principles are true or false, whether they represent your conscious, rational convictions - or a grab bag of notions snatched at random, whose sources, validity, context and consequences you do not know, notions which, more often than not, you would drop like a hot potato if you knew.

Satanism and Objectivism Nemo O bjectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand, is an acknowledged source for some of the Satanic philosophy as outlined in The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey. Ayn Rand was a brilliant and insightful author and philosopher and her best-selling novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead continue to attract deserved attention for a new generation of readers. I am a strong admirer of Ayn Rand but I am an even stronger admirer of Anton LaVey for the vital differences between the philosophies of Objectivism and Satanism. First, Objectivism holds that metaphysics , that branch of philosophy which concerns itself with the nature of reality, determines the nature of epistemology (which is concerned with how man acquires knowledge) as well as ethics (which is concerned with valuing human action), politics (social ethics) and art . Current philosophical disagreement on this issue still continues. It is, in fact, an unproven assertion by Rand that one's metaphysical assumptions determine one's ethics. doubt is vital in the absence of proof. At this fundamental level there is division between the two views of reality.
