Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand

Objectivism:The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (OPAR) is the only comprehensive treatment of Ayn Rand's philosophy. One of the OPAR site's most popular features is the excerpt section with its wide selection of passages from Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand that cover a diverse range of issues — from the nature of philosophy certainty , and the causes of emotions , to topics like justice, capitalism , and sex . When you read OPAR, you will understand how these seemingly disparate topics are, in fact, interconnected.
The Ominous Parallels

Is the freest country on earth about to become a totalitarian dictatorship? What were the factors that enabled the Nazis to seize power in pre-war Germany? Do those same conditions exist in America today?
These are the questions raised — and answered, with frightening clarity — by Leonard Peikoff, Ayn Rand's intellectual heir, in his powerful book

In short, Objectivism holds that there is an independent reality, that human beings are conscious of through their senses, in which reason is the only way of gathering knowledge and only the individual rational mind can process these data; in which the proper moral purpose of one's life is to pursue one's own rational self-interest ; and in which the only moral social system is full laissez-faire capitalism with a government strictly limited to courts police , and a military , because it is the only system where humans are barred from initiating the use of physical force upon each other (either within or outside the structure of said government). Rand characterizes Objectivism as a philosophy "for living on earth," grounded in reality and aimed at facilitating knowledge of the natural world and harmonious, mutually beneficial interactions between human beings. One major theme of Objectivist philosophy is a focus on the potential of the individual human being. Rand wrote:

(Redirected from Pseudo-philosophy
Pseudophilosophy is any idea or system that masquerades itself as philosophy while significantly failing to meet some suitable intellectual standards. The term is pejorative , and most applications of it are quite contentious. The term bears the same relationship to philosophy that pseudoscience bears to science The term is not infrequently used more casually to express contempt, irritation, or just dislike toward some idea or system of ideas. It is not, for the most part, used technically within academic philosophy , though it is likely to occur in philosophers' judgments on larger aspects of culture, their advice to new students, their assessments of other disciplines, and so forth. Nicholas Rescher , in The Oxford Companion to Philosophy , gives the following definition of the term:
Pseudo-philosophy consists in deliberations that masquerade as philosophical but are inept, incompetent, deficient in intellectual seriousness, and reflective of an insufficient commitment to the pursuit of truth." Rescher adds that the term is particularly appropriate when applied to "those who use the resources of reason to substantiate the claim that rationality is unachievable in matters of inquiry.

FAQ: What is Objectivism?
Answer by William Thomas My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute. Atlas Shrugged Objectivism is the philosophy of rational individualism founded by Ayn Rand (1905-1982). In novels such as The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , Rand dramatized her ideal man, the producer who lives by his own effort and does not give or receive the undeserved, who honors achievement and rejects envy. Rand laid out the details of her world-view in nonfiction books such as The Virtue of Selfishness and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal Objectivism holds that there is no greater moral goal than achieving happiness. But one cannot achieve happiness by wish or whim. Fundamentally, it requires rational respect for the facts of reality, including the facts about our human nature and needs. Happiness requires that one live by objective principles, including moral integrity and respect for the rights of others. Politically, Objectivists advocate laissez-faire capitalism. Under capitalism, a strictly limited government protects each person's rights to life, liberty, and property and forbids that anyone initiate force against anyone else. The heroes of Objectivism are achievers who build businesses, invent technologies, and create art and ideas, depending on their own talents and on trade with other independent people to reach their goals.

About Objectivism
My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.
Atlas Shrugged In her novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , and in nonfiction works such as Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, Ayn Rand forged a systematic philosophy of reason and freedom. Rand was a passionate individualist. She wrote in praise of "the men of unborrowed vision," who live by the judgment of their own minds, willing to stand alone against tradition and popular opinion. Her philosophy of Objectivism rejects the ethics of self-sacrifice and renunciation. She urged men to hold themselves and their lives as their highest values, and to live by the code of the free individual: self-reliance, integrity, rationality, productive effort. Objectivism celebrates the power of man's mind, defending reason and science against every form of irrationalism. It provides an intellectual foundation for objective standards of truth and value.

49. Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
The field of ethics, also called moral philosophy, involves systematizing, defending, and recommending Metaphysical Issues objectivism and Relativism
http://www.iep.utm.edu/e/ethics.htm
Ethics The field of ethics, also called moral philosophy, involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. Philosophers today usually divide ethical theories into three general subject areas: metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. Metaethics investigates where our ethical principles come from, and what they mean. Are they merely social inventions? Do they involve more than expressions of our individual emotions? Metaethical answers to these questions focus on the issues of universal truths, the will of God, the role of reason in ethical judgments, and the meaning of ethical terms themselves. Normative ethics takes on a more practical task, which is to arrive at moral standards that regulate right and wrong conduct. This may involve articulating the good habits that we should acquire, the duties that we should follow, or the consequences of our behavior on others. Finally, applied ethics involves examining specific controversial issues, such as abortion, infanticide, animal rights, environmental concerns, homosexuality, capital punishment, or nuclear war. By using the conceptual tools of metaethics and normative ethics, discussions in applied ethics try to resolve these controversial issues. The lines of distinction between metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics are often blurry. For example, the issue of abortion is an applied ethical topic since it involves a specific type of controversial behavior. But it also depends on more general normative principles, such as the right of self-rule and the right to life, which are litmus tests for determining the morality of that procedure. The issue also rests on metaethical issues such as, "where do rights come from?" and "what kind of beings have rights?"

Ayn Rand (1905-1982)
Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to those parts of this article) 1. Life Ayn Rand's life was often as colorful as those of her heroes in her best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged . Rand first made her name as a novelist, publishing We the Living in 1936, The Fountainhead in 1943, and her magnum opus Atlas Shrugged in 1957. These philosophical novels embodied themes she then developed in non-fiction form in a series of essays and books written in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905, Rand was raised in a middle-class family. As a child, she loved story-telling, and she decided at age nine to become a writer. In school showed academic promise, particularly in mathematics. Her family was devastated by the communist revolution of 1917, both by the social upheavals that the revolution and the ensuing civil war brought and by her father's pharmacy's being confiscated by the Soviets. The family moved to the Crimea to recover financially and to escape the harshness of life the revolution brought to St. Petersburg. They later returned to Petrograd (the new name given to St. Petersburg by the Soviets), where Rand was to attend university. At the University of Petrograd, Rand concentrated her studies on history, with secondary focuses on philosophy and literature. At university, she was repelled by the dominance of communist ideas and strong-arm tactics that suppressed free inquiry and discussion. As a youth, she had been repelled by the communists' political program, and now an adult, she was also more fully aware of the destructive effects that the revolution had had on Russian society more broadly.

FSU Objectivism is a campus club, located in Tallahassee Florida, dedicated to the discussion and promotion of the philosophy of Ayn Rand. The purpose of our site is three-fold: to create a presence on the web to promote our club; to provide a means of online communication between members and visitors; to create a means of raising funds for our club (through our Merchandise section). We stand for reason, rational egoism, and laissez-faire capitalism. We hold reason as man's only absolute and his only means of attaining knowledge. We hold that man, the rational animal, is an end in himself that if man is to achieve rational happiness, he must work towards the achievement of his values, sacrificing himself to no one and no one to himself. We hold that laissez-faire capitalism is the only social system that upholds the protection of individual rights rights required by man for his survival. We believe in the joy of living, in the glory of achievement, in the heroic in man.

A Philosophy for Living on Earth: Essays on Ayn Rand and Objectivism
Last Updated: 2005-07-24 Ayn Rand's philosophy, which she called Objectivism, is usually thought of as a capitalist creed for use and abuse by entrepreneurs and corporate titans; as an apologia for selfishness of the most boorish kind; as a crass, atheistic materialism; or as a hyper-rational offshoot of Aristotelian logic with strong Nietzschean overtones. Yet there is more to Rand's ideas than such caricatures can capture. There is a poetry in her thought that is almost universally ignored, a presentation of deeply humanistic possibilities, an empassioned defense of human freedom, a celebration of the sacred fire of individuality and creativity. There is much that is deeply good about Rand's vision, cheek by jowl with much that is incorrigibly bad and there is, too, much that has been distorted and misunderstood by friend and foe alike. I have been studying and absorbing the novels and philosophy of Ayn Rand for over twenty-five years. Unlike her faithful followers, I do not deify the woman; yet unlike her dismissive critics, neither do I demonize her. There is both good and bad in her art and her ideas; and in my life and my thinking I have striven to learn from that which is positive in the Randian tradition without in the least shrinking from recognition of that which is negative or just plain wrong. For me, the positive vision of human potential that Ayn Rand presents is best captured by the fragment of a line from the first scene of Part IV of
