'Pill that cures obesity'
A single new drug helps treat obesity, tackles cholesterol levels and helps smokers quit, reported six newspapers on 10 November 2004. The newspapers described trial results that were presented at a conference. The reliability of these results cannot be evaluated, as full details have not yet been published.
  • Six newspapers (1-6) reported the results of a two year trial of rimonabant. All the articles reported that participants taking the drug had seen their body weight drop compared to participants who were taking the placebo treatment.
  • The results of this trial were presented at the American Heart Association meeting in New Orleans. The trial assessed the effectiveness of two different doses of rimonabant or placebo given daily, in combination with a reduced calorie diet for a period of two years. The results, presented in a company press release, showed that participants who received the higher dose of rimonabant had a significantly reduced waist circumference, with 62.5% of participants losing more than 5% of their initial body weight and 32.8% losing in excess of 10%.
  • The newspaper articles were generally accurate in reporting the findings of the research. However, three of the articles (2,3,6) failed to state that the drug had been administered in conjunction with a restricted calorie diet. All of the articles referred to the fact that the drug has also been shown to help people stop smoking without gaining weight. However, this outcome was not assessed in the present trial.

Obesity and Departments of Family Medicine
From the Association of Departments of Family Medicine
Obesity is a national problem and one of great concern to many given that an epidemic like obesity is unlikely to be affected by a traditional medical treatment model. Reducing obesity rates will likely require an integrated approach that brings local practitioners, community agencies, such as schools and health departments, employers, and researchers together for comprehensive prevention and treatment programs. Fortunately, combining medical

Managed Care Disease Management Public Health Health Care Delivery An alarming rise occurred, during the last decade, in the prevalence of obesity and overweight in all states and regions of the United States. The U.S. Public Health Service projects that this condition will soon overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in our population. This emerging threat to public health affects our region. What can we do about it collectively? Clearly, it is a problem with multiple causes and must be addressed by federal, state and local public health officials, academia, community and faith based organizations, foundations, public health educators and health care providers.

Our genes
Genetic factors play an important role in this phenomenon. The genes underlying genetic predisposition can be revealed and exploited to both create personalized weight management programs based on a patient's genetic profile and to develop new obesity drugs. It has been demonstrated that 23% of obesity-related diabetes can be avoided with a weight management program tailored to the genetic make up of the individuals. Lindi et al, 2002. Some people have an increased risk of obesity when exposed to an unfavorable life style and our genetic make-up plays a crucial role in the development of the disease Handbook of Obesity, Bray, G.A.
Gene Ob will be working with individuals and the medical community to help people manage their weight by assessing their genetic predisposition and developing tailored diet and exercize programs. This technology is accessible and is the very first step into the treatment of obesity. Obesity in Children Overview
Obesity means an excess amount of body fat. No general agreement exists on the definition of obesity in children as it does adults. Most professionals use published obesity guidelines that use the body mass index (BMI) , or a modified BMI for age, as a measure of obesity for children. Others define obesity in children as body weight at least 20% higher than a healthy weight for a child of that height or a body fat percentage of more than 25% in boys and 32% in girls. Although obesity in children once was rare, it is now one of the most widespread medical problems in the United States and other developed countries. About 15% of adolescents (aged 12-19 years) and children (aged 6-11 years) are obese in the United States according to the American Obesity Association. The numbers are expected to continue increasing. Childhood obesity is one of our greatest health challenges. If your child is overweight, further weight gain can be prevented. Parents can help their children keep their weight in the healthy range.
