The Scientific Definition of Obesity and its Dangers
By Dr. Tanner Prevalence Guideline recommendations used in this article have been adapted from
  • The prevalence of obesity increased from 12% in 1991 to 18% in 1998. Increases were seen in both sexes and all socioeconomic classes, with the greatest increase seen in 18- to 29-year-olds and in those who have achieved higher education4 Obesity rates are underestimated because overweight people tend to underestimate their weight and overestimate their height5
Etiology
  • Obesity is a chronic condition that develops as a result of an interaction between a person's genetic makeup and their environment. How and why obesity occurs are not well understood; however, social, behavioral, cultural, psychological, metabolic, and genetic factors are involved1

Medications That Promote Weight Loss

Most available weight-loss medications are "appetite-suppressant" medications. Appetite-suppressant medications promote weight loss by decreasing appetite or increasing the feeling of being full. These medications decrease appetite by increasing serotonin or catecholaminetwo brain chemicals that affect mood and appetite. In 1999, the drug orlistat was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an obesity treatment. Orlistat works by reducing the body's ability to absorb dietary fat by about one third. Table 1 - Prescription Weight-Loss Medications GENERIC NAME TRADE NAME(S) Dexfenfluramine

While these medications are FDA approved for the treatment of depression, their use in weight loss is an "off-label" use. Studies of these medications generally have found that patients lost modest amounts of weight for up to 6 months. However, most studies have found that patients who lost weight while taking antidepressant medications tended to regain weight while they were still on the drug treatment.

Leptin Linked to Blood Clots and Obesity
A new risk factor for cardiovascular disease?
Daniel Eitzman

The association between obesity and blood clots is well known; but the cause has remained a mystery. Now, new research with mice conducted by scientists at the University of Michigan Medical School and published in the April 3 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that leptin may be responsible.
Knowing how to block this leptin-receptor interaction could help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who are either obese or overweight, which is half the adult population of the United States.

Atkins Foundation establishes new center for obesity research at WUSM, BJH A new facility for obesity research and treatment will be established at the School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital thanks to a $5 million donation from the Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation. Read more from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch $5 million gift sets up obesity-medicine center Center's director says gift has no strings (Republished with permission from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch . This article originally ran in the Business section on Tuesday, April 12, 2005) Focus of facility at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital will be on research and to "prevent and treat obesity in the community." By Judith VandeWater Of the Post-Dispatch A $5 million gift from the Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation will establish a center at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital to advance the field of obesity medicine. The center is named for Atkins and his widow, Veronica Atkins, but its purpose is not to further research of the late doctor's widely popular, yet still-controversial diet, which favors butter, steak and eggs over fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
