The global spread of obesity
January 12, 2000 Web posted at: 1:07 p.m. EST (1807 GMT) (CNN) Figures compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its "State of the World" report suggest that obesity is increasing worldwide and becoming a health problem in many of the same developing nations where malnutrition still exists. Globally, 1.2 billion people are estimated by WHO to be overweight, about the same number who's living conditions and access to food cause them to be underweight. Dr. Wilma Friere

Here are some recent comments from parents of our members:
  • "My daughter has pride in her ability to wear “real” clothes. She no longer HAS to wear elastic-waisted shorts, etc." "My son is more aware of the food he eats. He is more cooperative with my healthy eating plans and eats his vegetables without crying." "My daughter has trimmed down, feels better about herself, and enjoys exercising - they clean their room because I have positive reinforcement. They eat a better variety of food and we get along better because I have a plan for our eating and exercise program!" "My child has lost 8 pounds and has kept it off more than 6 months." "My child has more energy and is performing better in physical education - she spends less time in front of the TV and more time outside playing." "There have been many positive changes in my daughter since joining your club. First, she has become much more responsible for her things. She is keeping her room neater and caring for her pets on her own on a regular basis without a lot of "reminding" by me. Second, she now looks for things to help with around the house. The reward part of the program has opened her eyes to the possibilities of her hard work. She can see the results before she begins and that helps motivate her. Third, she has developed a greater sense of self. She tries harder in school and takes pride in her appearance."

Gene that helps body store fat may be important trigger of obesity
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) A thrifty gene that helped cavemen survive food shortages appears to be a common underlying trigger of both obesity and diabetes, researchers reported Monday. German researchers said the gene apparently prompts the body to store up fat for later.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Former President Bill Clinton said his weight problem and brush with death are the catalysts behind his foundation's initiative of tackling childhood obesity. Once famous for his love of fast food, Clinton told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta that bad health habits since childhood led to his September 2004 quadruple bypass surgery. That operation, he said, opened his eyes to a larger issue, and he turned his attention to the problem of overweight American children. "The brush with death I had maybe had the biggest impact of all," Clinton recalled. "I realized that one more time I've been given another chance, and I wanted to make the most of it."

By now it's a familiar refrain: Americans need to lose weight and get fit. But the necessity couldn't be more dire, the report says, citing data showing that about two-thirds of U.S. adults 131 million people are overweight. Despite the enormous public health impact of excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle at least 300,000 premature deaths and more than $90 billion in health care costs each year many doctors are failing to capitalize on their unique ability to help change patients' ways, the report says. Primary-care doctors "clearly have the access, as the average American makes three office visits per year," according to the report in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

New variations on stomach stapling
November 17, 1999 Web posted at: 11:23 a.m. EST (1623 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Linda Ciampa (CNN) It used to be called stomach stapling, but today there are several variations on the gastric bypass. Doctors have improved this surgery for the obese dramatically over the past few years. But it is not without risks. Since the late 1970s, Los Angeles Dr. Mathias Fobi has operated on more than 6,000 obese patients who were not successful with diet or exercise and whose excess weight put them at high risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. In recent years, many performers have had the procedure, including Roseanne Barr and Jo Marie Payton, who played Harriette Winslow on the TV series "Family Matters."

Obesity and overweight Facts
  • Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese. Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. The key causes are increased consumption of energy-dense foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and reduced physical activity.
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. Often coexisting in developing countries with under-nutrition, obesity is a complex condition, with serious social and psychological dimensions, affecting virtually all ages and socioeconomic groups. Increased consumption of more energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats, combined with reduced physical activity, have led to obesity rates that have risen three-fold or more since 1980 in some areas of North America, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, Australasia and China. The obesity epidemic is not restricted to industrialized societies; this increase is often faster in developing countries than in the developed world.

Gaining 5 pounds can greatly affect daily life
December 7, 1999 Web posted at: 5:50 p.m. EST (2250 GMT) (CNN) It has long been known that obesity can lead to a wide range of physical ailments. But a new study has shown that a weight gain of as little as five pounds can have immediate effects on routine aspects of daily life. After studying 40,000 female nurses, age 46 to 71, for four years, researchers have determined that those who gained from five to 20 pounds had great difficulty doing things most take for granted like getting dressed or taking a bath. The study included both normal-weight and overweight women. MESSAGE BOARD Diet and Fitness VIDEO CNN's Linda Ciampa reports on the problems a few pounds can cause.

Diet and physical activity: a public health priority A few largely preventable risk factors account for most of the world's disease burden. This reflects a significant change in diet habits and physical activity levels worldwide as a result of industrialization, urbanization, economic development and increasing food market globalization. Recognising this, WHO has adopted a broad-ranging approach and has developed, under a May 2002 mandate from Member States, a Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, which was endorsed by the May 2004 World Health Assembly.
Overall goal and guiding principles of the Global strategy

Key risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, low fruit and vegetable intake.

The three doctors concur that the worst that can happen is his triglycerides will rise a little and perhaps a little weight gain. Famous last words. By the end of the experiment, Spurlock gained 25 pounds, raised his cholesterol by 60, dropped his libido, and to the utter astonishment of his doctors began to turn his liver into goose pate. The request was to summarize the current epidemiological evidence linking five lifestyle risk factors to cancer incidence: tobacco use, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, poor diet, and alcohol use. On March 10, the IOM published "Fulfilling the Potential of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection," available online at http://www.iom.edu under "Recent Reports." The report calls for stepped-up efforts, coordinated by the US Department of Health and Human Services, to modify across the American population lifestyle factors that strongly influence not only the risk of cancer but also of other major health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The epidemic of obesity, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity is a special concern, with the report noting that obese individuals have a 33 percent increased risk of cancer. Your Cancer Risk Both HCCP and the IOM report authors recognize the need "to act on what we know rather than merely doing more research on the effectiveness of prevention strategies," said Colditz, who works with HCCP head and HSPH professor David Hunter to get cancer research results to the public. The report calls for "setting a blueprint to move prevention higher up on the agenda" in the health services system across the country, Colditz added.

Joint US/EU Limits on Food Marketing Urged to Combat Obesity Crisis
A coalition of more than 60 American and European consumer advocacy organizations is urging governments on both sides of the Atlantic to tackle multinational food marketing practices that contribute to obesity and diet-related disease by supporting adoption and implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity, and Health. The WHO strategy is scheduled to be approved at a meeting of the agency’s World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, May 17-21. Limits on food advertising and marketing directed at children, changes in school foods, improvements in food labelling, and mass education campaigns are among the elements of a comprehensive public health program called for in the WHO Global Strategy. Such steps are needed to combat rising obesity rates in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), according to the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD), a forum of consumer advocacy groups organized to promote consumer interests in US/EU policy-making. The WHO’s draft strategy is supported by practically all members of the EU but is facing strong opposition from the US, which has called on the agency to emphasize the role of the individual over government intervention as the primary means to combat obesity.
