Latest data shows rapid rise in obesity
Story Tools (AP) Some facts and figures about obesity in the United States from the recent health studies: The number of obese adults is soaring, up to nearly 59 million people, or almost a third of all adults and doubling over the past two decades. Fifteen percent of youths ages 6 to 19 were seriously overweight, the term experts use as a rough equivalent to obesity in children. That is nearly 9 million youths and triple the number in a similar assessment from 1980. Obesity can sharply reduce life expectancy. Studies released this year showed that being obese at age 20 can take 20 years off a person's life; being obese at age 40 can reduce life expectancy by seven years. The percentage of extremely obese people at least 100 pounds overweight is growing even faster, one study found. From the 1980s to 2000, extremely obese adults quadrupled to about 4 million, or about 1 in every 50 adults. Medical care for the obese averaged $732 per year more per person than for people of normal weight, one study found. Nationwide, that would mean $92.6 billion more in 2002, with half the cost picked up by government-funded Medicare and Medicaid programs.

The shape of a healthy diet (CNN) Jose Jimenez used to weigh 350 pounds. Then last year, at the age of 16, he turned to a drastic measure to lose weight bariatric surgery, or what is sometimes known as stomach stapling. "I wanted something that would work for me and I knew that the surgery would do that," Jose said. With childhood obesity rates soaring, some teenagers are turning to the once adult-only surgery, a procedure that closes off parts of the stomach and, sometimes, intestines. This restricts the amount of food a person can eat and creates a fuller feeling with a much smaller portion. In the seven months after his surgery, Jose lost 100 pounds and says he is still dropping weight.

More than twenty years of my adult life have been consumed with the struggle to lose weight. Obesity has plagued me and many diet plans have failed to provide effective long term weight loss. I am well educated to Masters Degree level with extensive professional and academic research experience in commerce and applied finance fields. That may not immediately sound relevant to the field of weight loss and obesity studies, but what exactly is? How many general medical practitioners really understand weight loss? Very few have ever studied nutrition or sports sciences or psychology and are therefore less than equipped to fully advise on sensible weight loss and dieting. The emphasis of 'conventional medicine' on drug and surgical approaches for weight loss to treat obesity more commonly shows the limitations of conventional medicine in providing healthy permanent solutions to chronic conditions. Where is an overweight or obese person to turn when they realise they need weight loss help? Are there any "one size fits all" solutions to weight loss? Why are there so many weight loss products, diet plans, weight loss clinics and spas, exercise programs, education programs, and yet obesity is increasing as a problem among the populations of the developed world just as fast as the "solutions" appear?

108. What Makes A Fat Man Fat?
This remarkable man saw at once that Banting s real trouble was obesity, notdeafness, and put him on an entirely new kind of diet.
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/fat/chap1.htm
Eat Fat And Grow Slim by Richard MacKarness, M.B., B.S (1958) What Makes A Fat Man Fat? People can be divided into two groups according to the way they deal with the excess food when they eat more than they require for their daily expenditure of energy. In 1950 at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, Professor Sir Charles Dodds, who is in charge of the Courtauld Institute of Biochemistry at the Middlesex Hospital, described an experiment he had carried out. He took people whose weights had been constant for many years and persuaded them to eat double or treble their normal amount of food. They did not put on weight. He showed that this was not due to a failure to digest or assimilate the extra food and suggested that they responded to over-eating by increasing their metabolic rate (rate of food using) and thus burned up the extra calories. He then over-fed people whose weights had not remained constant in the past and found that they showed no increase in metabolism but became fat. So two people of the same size, doing the same work and eating the same food will react quite differently when they overeat. One will stay the same weight and the other will gain. We all know that this is true even without scientific proof and yet the fact has not been taken into account or explained by any of the experts who write popular books and articles about slimming.

The government soon may try to change that by requiring or encouraging restaurants to display calories on their menus alongside the salads, entrees and desserts. The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that labeling menus is among several proposals it is considering to help people watch what they eat. Food companies already are required to put nutrition information on the backs of food packages, and nutrition advocates have been pressuring the government and the industry to impose similar requirements on the restaurant industry.

Obesity and Diet
If your weight is substantially above what is healthy for a person with your body composition, genetic background, and overall health status (based on other risk factors you might have), you may be considered obese. Obesity is a more serious condition than just being a little overweight because of the increased risk of:
  • heart diseases
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • arthritis
  • cancer
  • other disorders.
Your doctor can give you a good sense of whether or not your weight puts you in the category of being obese. As a rule of thumb, you might find the weight categories shown in the following tables to be useful. It is important to consider body composition. If you are muscular and athletic, you may weigh more than a sedentary person of the same height and frame size, yet you may be trim, while your sedentary counterpart may be overweight. If your weight comes from muscle, you may fall technically into the overweight category yet not be fat. However, in general, as you approach 20% or more above your desirable weight, your excess weight usually comes from fat. Body fat percentage can be determined by several methods, such as skinfold thickness, underwater weighing, total body water (hydrometry), and whole body potassium.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) Ken Powers knew the potential dangers of having his stomach stapled, but to a man who had tipped the scales at 475 pounds, those risks didn't much matter. "I had this thought: If I die on the operating table, having the surgery to try to better my life, I thought it was a better thing to do than to live the way I was living, which, in my opinion, I was kind of waiting to die anyway," he said. By the tens of thousands, morbidly obese people who have failed at diets, support groups and exercise programs are turning to surgery to lose weight. In 1998, there were 25,800 obesity-related operations, most of them gastric-bypass procedures commonly known as stomach stapling. This year, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery estimates 103,200 operations.

The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity
Overweight in Children and Adolescents
THE PROBLEM OF OVERWEIGHT IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
  • In 1999, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in the United States were overweight. This prevalence has nearly tripled for adolescents in the past 2 decades. Risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, occur with increased frequency in overweight children and adolescents compared to children with a healthy weight. Type 2 diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents. Overweight and obesity are closely linked to type 2 diabetes. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80% if one or more parent is overweight or obese. Overweight or obese adults are at risk for a number of health problems including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer. The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by the children themselves is social discrimination. This is associated with poor self-esteem and depression.

Obesity drugs alone won't do it
By Christy Oglesby CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) The pitch is all in the verbs: Absorb. Block. Burn. Metabolize. The names and promises of obesity drugs make it sound as if the pills will do all the work consuming, searing and routing fat right out of a body. Hardly. "I know of no drugs that absorb fat. It would be nice to say there's this drug that's a sponge that will suck it up, but it won't," said Dr. Arthur Frank, medical director of the weight management program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. And the obesity drugs that do increase metabolism or block the absorption of fat also require work and diet modification. None of the obesity drugs on the market is particularly potent, experts said. And they won't work without a decrease in food and fat consumption coupled with an increase in physical activity. VIDEO Some have been let down by new diet drugs. CNN's Elizabeth Cohen reports (August 22)
