CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Americans are not just getting fatter, they are ballooning to extremely obese proportions at an alarming rate. The number of extremely obese American adults those who are at least 100 pounds overweight has quadrupled since the 1980s to about 4 million. That works out to about 1 in every 50 adults. Extreme obesity once was thought to be a rare, distinct condition whose prevalence remained relatively steady over time. The new study contradicts that thinking and suggests that it is at least partly due to the same kinds of behavior overeating and under-activity that have contributed to the epidemic number of Americans with less severe weight problems.

Which? launched its nutrition campaign with the Health Warning to Government report in February 2004, setting out 12 demands for tackling obesity and diet-related disease. The campaign presented new research which showed that seven in ten consumers think the government should be doing more to promote what we should eat for a healthy diet. An image of chips being stubbed out in an ashtray was unveiled to highlight that the problem is now as serious as the smoking crisis. Our 12 demands This is our health warning to government: 1/ The government must prioritise nutrition policy by establishing a Nutrition Council. 2/ The government must set targets to reduce obesity in children and adults. 3/ There should be a 'children's watershed' for food advertising.

What happened to leptin?
August 30, 1999 Web posted at: 5:02 p.m. EDT (2102 GMT) By Laura Lane (WebMD) It's been four years since scientists first announced that they had found a hormone that could be the answer to the cries of the obese. Leptin, as scientists dubbed the hormone, helped obese mice to lose weight and possibly could do the same in people. As clinical trials progress, though, leptin is not looking to be quite as effective as first thought, said Dr. Daniel Porte Jr. of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, who has been studying obesity for more than 20 years. ALSO New hormone may help treat obesity The hormone has been effective in the 5 percent of obese people who lack the ability to make leptin, he said. Otherwise, for the vast majority of the obese, the hormone has been largely ineffective in reducing weight. In fact, because fat cells produce leptin, most obese people have high levels of the hormone, which encourages the brain to make alpha-MSH, which goes on to regulate body weight somehow.

New AMA policy recognizes that racial and ethnic disparities exist in the prevalence of obesity and diet-related diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. To combat these disparities, the AMA will now recommend that:
  • Physicians use culturally responsive care to improve the treatment and management of obesity and diet-related diseases in minority populations.
  • Cultural and socioeconomic considerations should be included in nutritional and dietary research and guidelines in order to treat overweight and obese patients.
  • Culturally effective guidelines that include ethnic food staples and multicultural symbols to depict serving sizes should be included in the revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Food Guide Pyramid

Study finds first evidence of long-term success in a weight loss program
TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) An unusually disciplined, long-term weight loss program helped participants following it lose nearly one-fifth their original weight and keep it off five years, researchers found. The Trevose Behavior Modification Program, serving about 1,200 people in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida, is the first weight loss program in the country proven to work long term, according to researchers at Rutgers University and University of Pennsylvania. Their study appears in July's International Journal of Obesity.

But just how many years will the fat take from you? A new study shows for the first time how much life expectancy is shortened for those who are overweight or obese at 40. For smokers, the statistics are even worse. "If you're overweight, you basically live three years less ... and if you're obese, you live approximately six to seven years less," says Dr. Robert Eckel with the American Heart Association.

The hypothesis that dietary intake and obesity stimulate the sympathetic nervous system was investigated in a cross-sectional study of 572 men aged 43-85 years from the Normative Aging Study. Habitus was represented by body mass index, as a measure of overall adiposity, and by the ratio of abdomen-to-hip circumference (abdomen/hip ratio), as a measure of centripetal fat distribution. Sympathetic activity was assessed by measurement of 24-hour urinary norepinephrine excretion. Increased body

    What is Obesity ?
Obesity occurs when the body is storing too much fat in its adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is primarily located under the skin and on top of each kidney. Men tend to carry body fat in their chest, abdomen and buttocks (apple shape). A woman tends to carry body fat in her breasts, hips, waist and buttocks (pear shape).
The effects of the disease, in terms of death, disability and morbidity are devastating. Despite the enormous toll taken by obesity, however, the disease does not receive the attention it deserves from government, the health care profession or the insurance industry.
The United States spends billions on health care. Yet, the rates for obesity are escalating. The impact caused by type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, stroke and the other conditions caused by obesity are only going to escalate
    The cause
I will show how obesity is caused and further, knowing the cause will automatically present the solution.
We will search for the way our body stores fat.
