Children's Health ... Childhood Illnesses > Obesity - Diet Childhood Illnesses Obesity - Diet Managing Obesity Through Diet In Singapore, the percentage of obese school children has remained at about 12% for the past 3 years. Obesity is defined as an excess amount of body fat. Being obese has many adverse consequences. The extra weight that obese children carry can put stress on their joints and result in leg pain, making simple activities more difficult to do. They may also suffer emotional and social consequences. Other children may tease them about their weight and this may cause the child to be self-conscious and embarrassed. Children who are obese are also more likely to become obese adults. Obesity later in life is associated with heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. For these reasons, actions to prevent obesity should begin early in life. Why Is My Child Obese? Generally, obesity is a result of consuming more food than the body needs. This may be due to a child eating too many calories and using up too few calories due to lack of exercise. These unused calories will be stored as body fat. Increased calorie intake may be caused by higher calorie foods such as fast foods, convenience foods and higher calorie snack foods being more readily available.

New hormone may help treat obesity
August 30, 1999 Web posted at: 5:02 p.m. EDT (2102 GMT) In this story: Obesity: Genes at work Hormone-deficient mice Not so fast RELATEDS By Laura Lane (WebMD) The fat mice have done it again: They rapidly lost weight after receiving injections of a hormone produced by the brain, a new study suggests. This isn't the first time researchers have reported results that could lead to a new medication to treat obesity. But these scientists, who published their findings in this week's international journal Nature Medicine, are saying that this time the approach is different. In addition to curbing appetites, the hormone, called alpha-MSH, may encourage the body to store less fat, says co-principal investigator Dr. Ute Hochgeschwender of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City.

Facts about obesity in the United States
TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) Some 97 million American adults, or 55 percent, are considered overweight or obese. According to the National Institutes of Health, this epidemic of obesity, which is also a growing problem among children, costs nearly $100 billion annually. That includes costs for weight loss treatment and treatment of many serious health problems caused by obesity.

47. Weight Control And Diet
Weight Control and diet. December 2001. WHAT IS obesity? (The role of highfat diets on obesity in children is less clear.
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc53.html
Weight Control and Diet December 2001 WHAT IS OBESITY? Stable weight depends on an even balance between energy intake from food and energy expenditure. Energy expenditure occurs during the day in three ways:
  • As energy expended during rest ( basal metabolism ). This accounts for about two-thirds of expended energy, which is generally used to maintain body functions, such as maintaining body temperature and muscle contractions in the heart and intestine.
  • As energy used to metabolize food ( thermogenesis ), accounting for about 10% of expended energy.
  • As energy expended during physical activity.
When a person's caloric intake exceeds his or her energy expenditure, the body stores the extra calories in the fat cells present in adipose tissue. These adipose cells function as energy reservoirs, and they enlarge or contract depending on how people use this energy. If people do not balance energy input and output by adopting healthy eating habits and regular exercise, then fat builds up, and they may become overweight.
Measurement of Obesity Obesity is determined by measurement of body fat, not merely body weight. People might be over the weight limit for normal standards, but if they are very muscular with low body fat, they are not obese. Others might be normal or underweight, but still have excessive body fat. Different measurements and factors are used to determine whether or not a person is overweight to the degree that it threatens health:

In a letter to the United Nations agency that is meeting next week, Health and Human Services official William Steiger questioned the organization's findings, said they were based on faulty science, and called for changes to the report. The WHO report recommends eating more fruits and vegetables and limiting fats and salt. It also suggests governments limit food advertising aimed at children and encourage their citizens to eat healthier foods. Taxes and subsidies could be used to reduce the price of healthy food and make them more attractive to consumers, the report said. The International Obesity Task Force estimates that 300 million people worldwide are obese and 750 million more are overweight, including 22 million children under age 5.

Obesity and diet pills By Dr. Mohamed Izham Mohamed Ibrahim THE HISTORY OF OBESITY DATES back to the Stone Age. The primary approaches to the treatment of obesity, from the time of Hippocrates until the 20th century , have principally involved changes in diet and exercise. In the current century, many new treatments for obesity, including drugs, have appeared. In general, obesity is defined as a body mass index greater than 30 kg/square metre. In clinical practice, it is considered a pathological disorder which could possibly lead to various illnesses. Today, weight loss is still of great interest to many and many such attempts to reduce weight by obese individuals are still regarded to be unsafe. Obesity, also called corpulence or fatness, is by far the most common effect of continued over-consumption of calories, more calories than are required to meet energy expenditure. Undoubtedly, many will agree that the most common cause of obesity is over-eating and poor eating behaviour. Indifferent lifestyles, coupled with the lack of physical activities, are frequently correlated to obesity, there is excessive accumulation of body fat in and on the body. This is due to the excessive calories which are stored as fat. Being overweight does not mean being obese. So when is someone considered overweight or obese? In general, if body weight is 10% more than the optimum weight for a certain height, a person is considered overweight. But if the weight us 20% more than the optimum weight, then he or she is considered obese.

Source: WebMD July 5, 1999 Web posted at: 11:52 a.m. EDT (1552 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore NEW YORK (CNN) A new program for overweight children who suffer from asthma is trying to help kids breathe a little easier. Asthma is the leading chronic illness in children. Alone, the disease can be difficult. But coupled with obesity, the effects can be much more intense. "Being overweight is like having a constrictive jacket strapped across your chest," said Dr. Joshua Needleman of the Montefiore Medical Center. "It squeezes your lungs, making them unable to function. It also pinches the breathing tubes, making it hard to breathe."
