Josef Templ
Josef is associated with ETH Zurich and can be contacted at jt@swe.uni-linz.ac.at. Oberon is a general-purpose programming language that evolved from Pascal and Modula-2. This evolution included improvements such as garbage collection, a streamlined module concept, numeric type inclusion, and null-terminated strings, but Oberon's principal unique feature is the concept of type extension. Type extension makes Oberon an object-oriented language. However, Oberon's approach to object-orientation differs considerably from that of other extensions of Pascal or Modula-2. Oberon implementations for DOS, Windows, Amiga, Mac, and UNIX are available via anonymous ftp from ftp.inf.ethz.ch (129.132.101.33) subdirectorypub/Oberon.
Modules
The most important difference between Pascal and Modula-2 is the decomposition of programs into modules. In Oberon, a program is an extensible set of modules; in other words, there is no main module. The unit of program execution in Oberon is the "command," an exported, parameterless procedure. Thus, a module in Oberon is:
  • The construct for expressing data abstraction by means of an import/export mechanism, like in Modula-2.

Oberon modules can be extended - even a long time after the development of the original module is finished, and possibly also during run time. The most impressive example is Oberon itself. For example Oberon knows the abstract type Display.Frame. A specific implementation is TextFrames.Frame which is the basis of all text frames. This implemented in Oberon as a standard model. In the course of the time variants have been added, which offer further possibilities, without modifying the original module Display. A long time after development of the standard Oberon Frames it is still possible to redefine Frames to add possibilities which had not been thought of at first - for instance Frames, which use active Internet connections or audiovisual possibilities. Abstract:
The Oberon System, a special developer's environment for the Oberon programming language, is described. A program developed at the University of Linz making the Oberon System accessible for a blind computer user is discussed.
1. Introduction
The Oberon programming language was developed by Wirth [1] mainly to design an extremely modular programming language for teaching purposes. At our university, the language is used to teach programming to computer science students at a beginner level. One of the various implementations of this language is the so-called Oberon System [2] developed by Wirth also. Since our working group wants to make studying materials accessible to blind students, we tried to find an accessibility solution for the Oberon System. Our attempts to use general accessibility solutions, also known as screen readers (see Section 3), failed, because the Obeorn System uses special controls hardly recognizable by a screen reader. To make the system accessible, we decided to develop a special accessibility solution.

Oberon programming language
Oberon is a programming language created in the late 1980s by Professor Niklaus Wirth (creator of the Pascal Modula and Modula-2 programming languages) and his associates at ETHZ in Switzerland . The name is from the moon of Uranus Oberon Oberon is also, somewhat confusingly, the name of the Oberon operating system , written in Oberon, for the Ceres workstation (built around the National Semiconductor 32032 CPU) and for the Chameleon workstation. Oberon, the language, has now been ported to many other operating systems, and is even available for the Java platform, where Oberon source code compiles either to source code in Java or to bytecode for a Java virtual machine. The operating system Oberon is also available for several other hardware platforms than the original workstation. The design continued the Wirth tradition/strategy of attempting to simplify without loss of power. Oberon may be thought of as a Modula-2 with full object oriented class/object capabilities, though not exactly in C++ or Smalltalk style. On the other hand, Oberon removes many features that can be implemented using objects, including enumerations, records, and many other features found in older Wirthian languages and elsewhere.

The adaptation of the CAL system Ceilidh for teaching the Oberon language University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, Slovenia Abstract The Ceilidh CAL system [1,2] was developed at the University of Nottingham in order to support the teaching of programming courses with a special emphasis on the preparation and assessment of practical exercises. We describe the adaptation of Ceilidh for teaching the Oberon language at the University of Ljubljana. In order to minimize the extent of modifications, a careful choice of an appropriate Oberon compiler was necessary, and a compilation procedure that allows the compilation of several modules had to be defined. Major changes were necessary in order to adapt the six tests that compose the Ceilidh marking system, especially the built-in typographic and complexity analyses. 1.Introduction The successful learning of programming courses requires a lot of practical computer work. This necessity causes a lot of additional work for the teaching staff, who have to assess and mark student program solutions. Such courses are usually performed in the first year of undergraduate study when the number of students is the highest. The bottom line is that this affects the educational quality of courses. However, we believe the computer can be valuable in this situation. Several Computer Aided Learning systems (CAL) are currently known. One is the Ceilidh system (University of Nottingham)[1,2], that was the base of our experiment. Apart from the presentation of the learning subject (the usual goal of CAL systems), Ceilidh also performs the automatic assessment and marking of student exercises, and the administration of the course. This makes Ceilidh a suitable computer aid for the difficulties described above.
