NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Good nutrition and regular physical activity are fundamental to healthy living. According to the National Institutes of Health, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating are linked to an increased risk of more than 20 physical ailments as well as a number of psychological problems. Specifically, poor eating and activity habits are major contributors to cancer, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Even though doctors and nurses may routinely provide their patients with nutrition education, according to the Journal of Pediatric Nursing "this short exchange of nutrition education is not sufficient to treat nor prevent such a complex and multi-factorial condition." Physical activity and nutrition are complex behaviors that are inextricably linked to the environments in which we live, work and play.. While education is one part of the solution, community-level interventions to improve the environments where people make choices about what to eat or how to get active are essential to improving overall health and well-being. Prevention Institute views poor physical activity and eating habits not primarily a result of individual choices and behaviors, but rather the result of living in an environment that does not support making healthier choices. We focus our efforts on identifying ways to improve community environments (e.g., community design, access to parks and safe public facilities), increase accountability among government and industries involved in food systems (e.g., use of public funds, sustainability, and marketing practices), and encourage media responsibility to support healthy behaviors through changes in policy and organizational practices.

Nutrition is a cornerstone of CVH. A diet rich in grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, fiber and low-fat calcium sources and low in total fat and saturated fat is basic to the prevention of CVD and a majority of the other chronic diseases. With North Carolina's rich agricultural sector, widely respected institutions of higher learning and research, excellent health care system, and an innovative public health system, CVH nutrition leaders have a strong foundation upon which to build. This Plan supports the coordination of resources and efforts, effective promotion of improved nutrition through social marketing efforts, and resource development and advocacy around pressing nutritional concerns in NC. Eat Smart, Move More . . . North Carolina is a statewide initiative that promotes increased opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity through policy and environmental change interventions and enhanced public awareness of the need for such changes. This initiative is led by the Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) Unit of the North Carolina Division of Public Health and it depends on broad partnerships among organizations, communities, and individuals across the state.

National Fitness and Nutrition Organizations to Highlight Health and Wellness Programs in Austin
WASHINGTON, May 4 /PRNewswire/ The American Council for Fitness and Nutrition (ACFN), in collaboration with the National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF), today held the second in a series of breakfast panel discussions called TRIUMPH - Trends, Resources and Inspiration for Understanding and Maintaining Physical Health in Austin, Tex. TRIUMPH was developed to convene organizations that are empowering people to embrace healthier lifestyles and share information about practical and viable solutions to obesity. This is especially important in Texas, where according to the American Heart Association, 61 percent of Texas adults and 40 percent of Texas children are overweight or obese. "ACFN is seeking to highlight the progress that has been made across the state of Texas in building awareness about how to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle and prevent obesity. This is the goal of the TRIUMPH initiative to let people know there are programs that are making a positive impact on health and wellness," said ACFN Chair Susan Finn, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., F.A.D.A., who moderated the event. "Through collaboration, we learn more about what's working and share ideas with those committed to helping people improve their physical health."
