The Nutrition Institute offers an educational and research program established at the University of Bridgeport since 1977. The goals of the Institute are to provide a sound understanding of the principles of nutrition and its valuable role toward attaining a longer and healthier life. Through our activities in education, internship training programs, and workshops, we hope to raise the awareness of the value of nutrition in affecting the wellness of the community. Dr. David Brady Program of Study
The Master of Science curriculum focuses on the role of human nutrition as a preventative, adjunctive, and alternative strategy for intervention in the disease process. The curriculum provides a core of basic and advanced nutrition courses, basic and clinical biochemistry, nutrition education and counseling, biostatistics, and issues in public health nutrition. Elective courses are also offered and a thesis or comprehensive exam is required to fulfill degree requirements. Accreditation
The Human Nutrition Program is licensed and accredited by the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, New England Association of Schools and Colleges. To the Editor: In the article by Pi-Sunyer1 on the epidemiology of central fat distribution in relation to disease, the author discusses the differences in central fat accretion in different ethno-racial groups. However, in discussing the Asian population, the author mentions south Asians and the Japanese, but not the Chinese. Because one-quarter of the world population is Chinese, and because the Chinese constitute the majority of the Asian population, I wish to discuss the importance of abdominal obesity as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in this population. That bulging waistline is a better predictor of cardiovascular diseases than body mass index certainly holds true for the Chinese population.2 This is true whether the person is male3 or female,3-5 an adult3-5 or a child,2,6 and living in northern China,6 southern China,7 or Singapore.8

Which? launched its nutrition campaign with the Health Warning to Government report in February 2004, setting out 12 demands for tackling obesity and diet-related disease. The campaign presented new research which showed that seven in ten consumers think the government should be doing more to promote what we should eat for a healthy diet. An image of chips being stubbed out in an ashtray was unveiled to highlight that the problem is now as serious as the smoking crisis. Our 12 demands This is our health warning to government: 1/ The government must prioritise nutrition policy by establishing a Nutrition Council. 2/ The government must set targets to reduce obesity in children and adults. 3/ There should be a 'children's watershed' for food advertising.

Printer-friendly file PDF file for this page PDF file of all Nutrition Source Webpages Welcome to the Nutrition Source, a Web site maintained by the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. Aside from not smoking, the most important determinants of good health are what we eat and how active we are. The Nutrition Source is designed to get you started down the path toward the healthiest diet possible. At the Nutrition Source, we explore the latest science about healthy eating for adults, answering key questions:
  • How helpful is the USDA's new Pyramid and "food guidance system"? Should you still be concerned about fat intake? Should you eat more or fewer carbohydrates? What about eggs? Fiber? Calcium?
A lot of confusing information about nutrition gets batted about in the media and certain health circles, making it very hard to know what to eat. The Nutrition Source will cut through all that, providing clear tips for healthy eating and dispelling a few nutrition myths along the way. And you won't just find out what you should eat, but why. ABOUT THIS SITE HSPH DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITION The aim of the Harvard School of Public Health Nutrition Source is to provide timely information on diet and nutrition for clinicians, allied health professionals, and the public. The contents of this Web site are not intended to offer personal medical advice, which should be obtained from a health-care provider.
