Services Provided

Outpatient services include in-office endoscopy and large volume paracentesis clinics. In collaboration with specialists in interventional radiology, transplant surgery and therapeutic endoscopy, patients undergo sophisticated and complicated procedures such as TIPS and stenting of biliary strictures. Because we know that sorting through all the information available about liver diseases can be difficult, we occasionally offer educational seminars to provide straight, unbiased information. Our format is casual and friendly, with ample time allowed for participants to ask questions. Call our office for information about upcoming programs. Clinical Team

Org. nutrition, prevention of diabetes, overweight, blood vessel damage heart Diabetes causes heart disease but heart disease never causes diabetes
http://www.health-heart.org/diabetes.htm
Adult (-type 2-) Diabetes Home Simple Français Good Food ... Index Why a Type 2 Diabetes Page in a Heart-Health Site? Well, both are related to nutrition and both can be prevented or helped by the same foods and supplements. Type 2 diabetes is normally preceded by decades of slowly increasing insulin, blood sugar, and belt-size .. and it is always healthier to sit on your fat than have your fat sit on you Early prevention is very effective but there come a point when insulin production permanently breaks down. Smart nutrition (and portion control) can first prevent overweight and diabetes , and eventually heart disease Both conditions are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans and 1 in 3 of those over age 60 developing 'adult' diabetes. Most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases for an amazing 1/4th of total health care costs! Other countries have similar increasing rates. Later-in-life diabetes (during pregnancy being a warning) is an eventual one-way track to heart disease. What makes a diabetic? Simply put: when your pre-breakfast blood sugar ( plasma glucose) gets over 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L).

Nutrition for People with Huntington's Disease
Introduction Resources By Renette Davis with assistance from people on the Mailing List for Huntington's Disease
Introduction
Dysphagia is the most common cause of death in HD, either directly from suffocation or aspiration, or indirectly from starvation.
(From A Physician's Guide to the Management of Huntington's Disease by Neal G. Ranen, M.D., Carol E. Peyser, M.D., and Susan E. Folstein, M.D., published 1993 by the Huntington's Disease Society of America, p. 24.) Dysphagia means difficulty in swallowing. According to A Physician's Guide to the Management of Huntington's Disease dysphagia in Huntington's Disease appears to result from "difficulty with closing the mouth and chewing, mucus formation, choking on liquids, food gulping, difficulty with coordinating the sequence of swallowing, difficulty clearing the mouth of excess food after each swallow, and the unexpected inspiration of air." A new pamphlet entitled Huntington's Disease , published in 1996 by the Huntington's Disease Society of America, says on p. 17, "Nutrition is important in everyone's life, but takes on added significance in HD. People with HD require an unusually high number of calories to maintain their body weight. Maintaining, or even gaining, weight can help reduce involuntary movements and other symptoms, particularly in the later stages of HD." For this reason, we are trying to gather together cookbooks, recipes, ideas for finger foods, etc. for people with Huntington's Disease. We welcome suggestions from anyone who has experience with Huntington's Disease or with dysphagia. Send your suggestions to Renette Davis at:

http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/nutrition/diets/celiac.html
KidsHealth Kids Special Diets
Have you ever eaten gluten? No, not glue - gluten! If you've ever eaten a piece of bread, a slice of pizza, or a bowl of cereal, chances are you have. Gluten (say: gloo -tin) is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley - grains that are in many everyday foods. Most people can eat food containing gluten with no trouble. But for some people, eating gluten can cause a reaction in their bodies. Someone who has this problem has celiac (say: see -lee-ak) disease. After you eat food, it goes to your stomach, which is part of a group of organs that make up your digestive system . An important part of the digestive system is the small intestine, which is lined with villi (say: vih -lie). Villi are usually described as microscopic, finger-like projections. Weird, huh? Fingers in your intestines! But don't forget that they're microscopic, meaning they are extremely small - so small you can't see them without a microscope . The villi are important because they absorb nutrients into the body. For someone with celiac disease, eating gluten - in a piece of bread, for instance - causes an immune system reaction. Your immune system ordinarily keeps you from getting sick, but in someone with celiac disease, the body starts damaging and destroying the villi. Without villi, a person's body can't absorb vitamins and nutrients from food. Without enough nutrients, a kid's body has a tough time staying healthy and growing properly. Even if the person is eating a lot, he or she might still lose weight and might develop

Any advice about the consumption of alcohol must take into account not only the complex relation between alcohol and cardiovascular disease but also the well-known association of heavy consumption of alcohol with a large number of health risks. One approach would be to recommend no consumption of alcohol. However, a large number of recent observational studies have consistently demonstrated a reduction in coronary heart disease (CHD) with moderate consumption of alcohol.
