    Please to remember
    Please to remember,
    The Fifth of November,
    Gunpowder, treason and plot;
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot. Origin This rhyme commemorates the day in 1605 when a group of Roman Catholics including Guy Fawkes, were caught in the act of trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament. When news of the plot got out, Londoners were so relieved that the conspirators had been caught that they lit bonfires throughout the city as a celebration. Over the centuries thet celebrations have become more elaborate and now fabulous firework displays are a feature throughout England on the night of November 5th. A week or so prior to that, children make effigies of Guy Fawkes which they take door to door asking for 'A penny for the Guy'.' On Bonfire Night these Guys are traditionally burnt on top of a bonfire.

    The candlestick
Origin There has been a tradition of candle leaping in England for a very long time. It was both a sport and a way of telling fortunes. The person who could leap over a lit candle without the flame blowing out was considered to be going to have good luck over the next year. One of the places where candle leaping was most popular was in Buckinghamshire, where the lace makers of Wendover used to practice it on the feast of their patron saint, St. Catherine on November 25th. Word Families in Nursery Rhymes Word families
are groups of words that have a common feature or pattern - they have some of the same combinations of letters in them and a similar sound. For example, at, cat, hat, and fat are a family of words with the "at" sound and letter combination in common. The 37 most common word families in English (according to Wylie and Durrell ) are: ack, ain, ake, ale, all, ame, an, ank, ap, ash, at, ate, aw ay, eat, ell, est, ice, ick, ide, ight, ill, in, ine, ing, ink, ip, it, ock, oke, op, ore, ot, uck ,ug, ump, unk. Many of the nursery rhymes contain common word families. You can use these rhymes to teach these letter combinations (and how they are spelled and spoken), having the students sound them out after memorizing the rhyme. You can study one word family a week. Students can use the Little Explorers Picture Dictionary to look for more words that belong to word families.

A Folk Tale generally has to do with every day life, and involves a peasant gaining power over a superior. They also often involve animals with human characteristics, such as The Three Little Pigs. A Fairy Tale is not necessarily a story involving fairies. What they are is a sub-genre of folk tales, which involve supernatural characters such as giants, witches and elves. There is also almost always some element of magic, and good winning over evil. (Such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk) They are always set in the past (thus the once upon a time aspect), and the setting is usually in an unspecified time and place. Fairy tales are not folk tales or legends or myths, but they are derived from a strong oral tradition spanning many cultures.

    Poet's Pantry Field Trip
Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip By Cara Bafile Poetry, with its beautiful sound and imaginative nature, is at the same time both intriguing and perplexing to students. It is essential for young children to experience some poetry while they are in elementary school so that they will become comfortable with its format and interpretation. Students who are not afforded such an opportunity can be frustrated by this type of expression, not only in understanding published poetry but also in writing their own work. What is the subject of this poem? What type of poem is this? What is the message of the poem? How does accompanying artwork enhance the presentation of a poem? , and How does the poet feel about the subject of the poem? To broaden the scope of this tour, teachers may choose to have students write their own poetry and publish it in the classroom or on the Internet. Suggestions for ways to expand the learning experience into other subject areas are included in the

Her father would take her to a magical place not far from the beaches but nestled in a secluded, wooded area that to a 6 year old, was a place of magic in a world of familiar faces. That little girl grew up with fond memories of Storybook Land and a few days ago, the little girl (who was now not so little) went back to that familiar place with her own children. Such was my own experience last Thursday as I visited the Jersey beaches for a week's vacation and vowed to take my children to Storybook Land. This quaint theme park is located 10 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey and would be approximately one hour from Philadelphia. Storybook Land has been in operation for 45 years and owned by the same family. Everything I remember about it stayed the same and there were things there that I forgot but was glad to see. I took three of my children (7, 4, 2 1/2 years) and I'm not sure who had more fun.

    The Best Children's Literature

of literature for children and young adults (two separate sections) on the Net. Because we all know very adult six-year-olds and very childish teenagers
I have forgone age specific reading suggestions. Suffice it to say that
you will find in the "children" section those works which might either be read
to a younger child or which a younger child might read on his or her own; while
the "young adult" section contains mostly those works which might present
some difficulties for the youngest readers.
This compilation will be an ongoing project from now on; and, naturally, your
help will always be greatly appreciated: If you know of an excellent work
for children or young adults, please let us know about itIf we judge it to be worthy of inclusion in this page we will most certainly include it.
