About the Lipan Apaches
The Lipan Apaches were one of the most important subgroups of Apaches in Texas. Lipan means "Warriors of the Mountains". (They also called themselves "Tindi," which means the same.) They were fierce fighters and they often battled or fought alongside the early Texas settlers. About the Songs Three Lipan Apache Songs (As Sung by a Lipan Medicine Man at the turn of the 20th century) "These songs have been hidden from view for more than 80 years. The songs were recorded by a BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) Agent in 1910, in the White Mountains area, just off the Clear Fork River. The name of the Apache Medicine Man whose songs these belong to is long dead. As is Lipan custom, his name is not allowed to be spoken in public. Permission to use these three Apache songs was given to me by a modern-day Lipan Medicine Man." -Daniel Castro Romero Jr., Lipan Apache

The time between birth and six months is primarily about conditioning your child to your voice, and to the sight of books. Developing an understanding of these books comes later on. Books for babies should provide stimulation to the baby’s sight and hearing. Remember- little eyes cannot focus on the complicated illustrations that adults easily recognize. In other words, that trip to the art gallery will have to wait a few years.

Whitt's Kits Nursery Rhyme Lit Kits Many librarians and classroom teachers I've spoken with say that there are children coming to them that are unfamiliar with what we consider "common" nursery rhymes. To that end, I have created four sets of Lit Kits to share a dozen classic nursery rhymes. Below you will find the contents of each kit. As with all the Lit Kits, the cost is $15/set of three packets. Nursery Rhymes #1 The Mouse Ran Up the Clock ~ Mouse Mask The Three Little Kittens ~ Finger Puppets Three Blind Mice ~ Tic-Tac-Toe Game Nursery Rhymes #2 Cotton ball sheep Sing-a-Song of Sixpence ~ Finger play Humpty Dumpty ~ Egg puzzles Nursery Rhymes #3 Paper plate spider Making oatmeal One, Two, Buckle My Shoe ~ Bingo game Each Lit Kit comes with three packets: a craft, an activity and a game. Are you an elementary classroom teacher looking for ready-made thematic kits or a wonderful way to connect parents as partners in education? Are you a preschool teacher who'd like some new ideas? Are you a librarian who'd like some crafts, games and activities at your fingertips or looking for an "at home" activity for your summer reading program? Are you a parent who home schools your children and would like some fresh ideas on a variety of themes or you'd like a "back up" plan for those days when you need a break? Are you the parent of a young adult babysitter who could use some "tricks up his/her sleeve"? If you are any or all of the above, a Lit Kit may be just what you need! So, come on in and see what we have! Carrie Some comments: "I love my Whitt's Kits. Thanks for recommending them!" ~ Denise

Grim lit
Why are children's books so grim? In The Spectator (use this for registration), Rachel Johnson complains that children's literature these days is all too devoted to sex and social issues. Instead of reading Anne of Green Gables and The Secret Garden her daughter reads about a child who smears the walls with excrement, children who cope with a manic-depressive mother, a girl dumped in a dustbin at birth, etc. Take Doing It by Melvin Burgess, about three boys learning about sex, and I quote from the blurb: "Dino really fancies fit, sexy Jackie but she just won't give him what he wants. Jonathan likes Deborah, but she's a bit fat what will his mates say? Ben's been secretly shagging his teacher for ages. He used to love it, but what if he wants to stop?" . . . why are some children's books (pace Potter) so grim? (And I do mean grim rather than dark.) Philip Pullman and Lemony Snicket are dark in the way that C.S. Lewis or Roald Dahl are dark, in an inventive, fantastical, even anarchical way that takes root and sprouts in the child's imagination. Whereas Doing It and the forthcoming Julie Burchill book

Flying Motorcycles! Frisbees With Fangs! They Learn to Teach
About Harry Potter in Children's Literature Class
Flying motorcycles, soccer on broomsticks, self-shuffling cards, letters that howl at you when you open them, frisbees with fangs, and flags that play their own national anthems…not only children delight in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels and look forward to the upcoming film. SSU students do too. Potter is now a solid part of the curriculum in Professor Sandra Feldman’s Children’s Literature class. "Harry Potter is just one of the restive characters we find in children’s literature," says Feldman. Potter, now famous beyond many of literature’s finest, stands tall next to Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Harriet the Spy. In English 342 there is a great deal of talk, much writing, and a hefty amount of reading in this "kids lit" course. Most of the forty plus students are working towards their multi-subject teaching credential. As part of their teacher preparation, they delve into the vast body of children’s literature in hopes of gaining methods and insights that will help them in their future roles as educators.

http://www.kidslitquiz.com/SA/report.html
It would have been hard for the subtle knife to cut through the atmosphere of tension hovering over the stage of the Aotea centre in Auckland, New Zealand. Tables of four children huddled together, to pitch their wits against each other. All these children would have imbibed literature for months of the previous year: because they love reading and because they were broadening their normal reading base, in an attempt to cover whatever topics the Wizard of Words, Wayne Mills (in SA we would call him the Sangoma of Stories) could conjure up. The team had little idea what to expect from the New Zealand finals. When Wayne identified the five themes (with twelve questions per theme) for the finals, they realised the focus was narrower: a whole section on Hans Christian Anderson, another on Fables, one on Nursery Rhymes, another on "Guess the Author" and finally one on "Identify the book from opening lines". The quizmaster went to great pains to ask questions that were not regionally biased towards teams from one of the three countries represented, so many questions covered books from the USA. The buzzer system ensured that the first team to buzz answered the question. For the SA team, this was a great learning curve – a quick draw of literary memory, with pulses racing as they reached for the buzzer, often too late. One had to be sure of the answer, as a wrong answer led to points being subtracted. Overall the team came sixth, with an awesome win by a local New Zealand school for girls, St. Margaret's. All the teams were presented with book prizes and Paper Plus, the sponsors, had ensured these were recently issued titles, to take keen readers even further in their never ending search for new, exciting worlds of literature.

There's something quite fascinating about nursery rhymes. On the surface, they're simple little songs with simple little words sung by children still basking in the light of their simple little lives. Yet scratch the surface of any nursery rhyme and you'll reveal a much more complex 'adult' history. These rhymes were often born out of a desire to instruct or teach, or to pass on a moral lesson. They were also a way in which major historical events could be remembered and passed on, like the Great Fire of London in 'London's Burning' or the devastation of the Plague immortalised in the rather creepy 'Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses'. Indeed, just what is it that makes some nursery rhymes seem rather sinister? Why did the makers of the seminal and utterly spooky British TV series
