Violence in Nursery Rhymes Big News
Many blogs and new sources have been mentioning the new study that shows that there is more violence in traditional nursery rhymes than in early evening TV shows. I think that everyone who has read nursery rhymes and folk tales understands that they are violent, cautionary tales. And now experts are coming out to refute the results of the study: What's next, labels warning of violence for the Brothers Grimm? The researchers admit that they did the study rather tongue-in-cheek, but the way that the media has seized upton the results worries me. We are comparing literature to a visual medium. They are vastly different. In one the children are usually with an adult and having to create images with their imagination. In the other children are simply exposed to images that they may not be ready for. It also must be pointed out that they were looking at early evening TV, not the prime time of CSI, ER and others. Reading Together in School
Buffalo News - Reading in tandem is an article about an elementary school that is using fifth graders as reading role-models for K through 2nd graders who are having trouble learning to read. The 5th graders read aloud to the younger children, showing how much they like books. The program is brand new, so there is no data about how effective it is, but the idea sounds like a great one for both the older and younger kids. Posted by saecker at 08:16 AM Permalink Comments (0)

Paperplus Kids' Lit Quiz
Is Your School Too Cool to Fool? The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual nationwide literature competition. Teams of four students work together to answer wide-ranging literary questions. The winning team from each region competes in the national finals as part of the annual Storylines Festival of New Zealand Children's Writers and Illustrators. How is the Quiz Organised? Teams are asked 100 questions in 10 categories, which vary from year to year. Each team is asked to select one category, for which they will receive double the points. Teams work collaboratively to answer each question. Contestants will ponder questions from almost any genre including comics, poetry, nursery rhymes, classics and contemporary fiction. Topics can range from identifying music with an association to a particular book, while questions may range from "who owned a faithful dog called Snowy/", to "who was the girl who had the incredible powers of hypnotism?" Prizes The total prize pool of over $30,000 includes Paperplus book vouchers and assistance towards travel and accommodatioin expenses. All participants will be given books for participating. The winning team will take home the Paperplus Cup. This year parents will also be put to the test, with the opportunity to win on the spot prizes.

KIDstack (DOCU-STACK 5)
This page targets Collections of Children's Literature . Collections are divided into "English", "French" and "Spanish" sections. Parents and educators who are curious about news and issues in Children's Literature may wish to consult The Children's Book Council or About.com's Books for Kids . Since it is expensive and time consuming to produce, host and keep track of digital documents, some of these sites will disappear, though I have tried to pick among those which appear to be stable. However, I am constantly looking for new collections. Since our shelving system will be evolving toward something less primitive and more intuitively researchable, I will occasionally break a multi-topic site into its logical components. You will note that in the DOCU-STACKS, our links are set to display URLs. Here is our entire stack list, linking library patrons to nearly a million and a half online documents.
