a history of Cocaine in Canada and the US. Coca has been used for the elevation of mood, to stimulate tired workers, and to produce euphoria for thousands of years in Central and South America. In the mid-nineteenth century the US and Europe took note of it’s seemingly beneficial properties and began to extract it’s principal active ingredient and made cocaine available as a water-soluble powder. It was discovered by physicians that the drug had potential use as an antidepressant, an asthma remedy and as a local anesthetic. At the same time, many companies emerged extolling the virtues of several new tonics that used cocaine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in the coca leaf, as an additive. These patented tonics could be bought without prescription for the relief of many common ailments, including, of course, chronic fatigue.

Canada's Provinces and Territories Alberta Named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, Alberta was proclaimed a province on September 1, 1905. Located where the Rocky Mountains meet the prairie, Alberta's principal industries include oil and gas, which became a major revenue generator starting in the late 1940s, and agriculture, thanks to the pioneering farmers who settled in the province in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Memories of that era remain and are celebrated every summer when Calgarians don cowboy boots and hats and attend rodeos and chuckwagon races during the city's internationally renowned Stampede. But though still proud of being a part of the Canadian Wild West, many Albertans have left their farms and ranches for the city. Eighty per cent of the province's population of over 2.7 million is urban with more than half living in the provincial capital, Edmonton, and in Calgary. And Alberta entered the 21st century focused on its growing advanced technology sector highlighted by the Alberta Research Council, Canada's largest provincial research organization with about 400 employees. The province, which is home to 29 universities and colleges, also touts itself as having the most skilled and educated people in North America in which more than 40 per cent of Alberta's workforce hold post-secondary degrees or certificates.

It is made up of 10 provinces, namely Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Qu©bec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia and 3 territories, which are the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The provinces have a larger degree of government autonomy than the territories. Canada has 6 time zones and a population of approximately 31 million people. The United Nations has consistently ranked it as one of the Best Countries in the World in which to live. A recent international poll listed Vancouver as joint top city in the world to live in (with Bern,Vienna, and Zurich). The country has two official languages: English, which is spoken by 59% of Canadians, and French, spoken by 23% of Canadians. The capital city is Ottawa, Ontario and the country has three levels of government: Federal, Provincial and Municipal. The Mounties (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) still wear their famous red uniform, but only for ceremonial purposes. In the summer, temperatures in the high 30's are common and in the winter -30 is not uncommon, particularly in the prairies and Rockies. in Nunavut
By Andy Watson Feb. 14, 2003 Canada's national summer sport is coming to Canada's newest territory. The Canadian Lacrosse Association has given associate member status to a lacrosse program in Nunavut. The sport has grown in popularity faster than anyone expected, organizers say. Nunavut is the only territory with a federally funded lacrosse league. And the program, reaching three cities so far, only costs $12,000. Gyms and arenas in Nunavut are being used for lacrosse during the winter months Why lacrosse? "This sport preaches on discipline and that's a key fact in aboriginal communities," organizer Russ Sheppard says. "Those disciplined in the game are disciplined outside of the game in life." He says this is just one reason the sport is popular. Players are also drawn to the finesse and roughness of the game.

Alberta's grandeur and beauty are obvious from the moment you arrive. With vast blue skies and the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, and thousands of hectares of farmland and forests, it won't be long before you're engulfed by Alberta's natural features.
But it's the people of Alberta that give the province its charm and fervour. There seems to be an ardent sense of community inherent in the people who live there.
Calgary, home of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede , is the fastest growing city in the country. Edmonton , the provincial capital, features world-class attractions including West Edmonton Mall the world's largest.
Not to be missed is Banff National Park and the Royal Tyrell Museum at Drumheller to see one of the world's greatest collections of dinosaur remains. Add to My TravelGuide! Edit Listing British Columbia
Shouldering the Pacific Ocean on the western coast of Canada, British Columbia (B.C.) is perhaps the country's most culturally and topographically diverse province. Its ethnic depth and scenic beauty are simply astounding. Not only does the province have one of the country's highest rates of foreign immigration (and wonderful communities and traditions that accompany this), but it's also home to countless waterways, mountains, farmlands, forests and cities.
In one trip to the province, a visitor can fish for salmon off the sun-bleached shores near
