Aboriginal Place Names
July 2001
Aboriginal place names contribute to a rich tapestry The map of Canada is a rich tapestry of place names. These names reflect the diverse history and heritage of the nation. Many of the country's earliest place names draw on Aboriginal sources. Before the arrival of Europeans, First Nations and Inuit gave names to places throughout the country to identify the land they knew so well, and with which they had a strong spiritual connection. For centuries, these names that described the natural features of the land, or commemorated significant historical events, passed from one generation to the next. Many of these names still survive today. The representation of these names in European languages sometimes diminishes the lyrical sounds of the original names themselves. Nevertheless, the story of Aboriginal place names goes back to the earliest remembered history of our country. A sample of some Aboriginal place names The name of Canada itself, and the names of some provinces and territories, come from place names in Aboriginal languages.
  • Canada: is from Kanata, meaning "settlement" or "village" in the language of the Huron.

MY CANADA INCLUDES THE NORTH
Seen from Nunavut, how do our founding parents LaFontaine and
Baldwin look? Rather farsighted, it seems
by John Ralston Saul I've been in Pond Inlet for the past three weeks 1,000 kilometres north of Iqaluit, near the top of Baffin Island. The peculiar coincidence of writing from here about myths born in south-central Canada imposes its own logic. After all, this is a Canadian reality 1,400 citizens in a high-Arctic town, working to fit Inuit culture together with that of the South. The challenge is obvious, even though Pond Inlet is both a successful community and, it must be said, one of the most beautiful in the country. What about LaFontaine and Baldwin? Well, it strikes me that the territory of Nunavut is a perfect extension to their 1848 idea, which was to create the first intentionally non-monolithic, democratic nation-state. I sometimes think of Canada as the first postmodern nation-state, invented 150 years before the idea of postmodernity. During the three years in office, from 1848 to 1851, of the great coalition of Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin, the basic shape and direction of our society were set: the foundations of our democracy (including democratic municipal government), much of our legal system, a professional bureaucracy, the beginnings of public education and public universities, and the beginnings of a railway system. And, of course, the concept of two official languages and cultures was formalized. Perhaps most important, through the government's understated reaction to the burning of Parliament, it was demonstrated that restraint by those with power was the key to a successful society built upon complexity.

This flag was established by a Warrant from the Governor General of Canada dated 31 March 1999, and subsequently confirmed by the Provisional Parliament on 1 April 1999.
Christopher Southworth, 14 March 2003 Formerly the eastern part of the Northwest Territories which has received a separate status on 1 April 1999. From a Canadian Government publication The colours blue and gold are the ones preferred by the Nunavut Implementation Commissioners to symbolize the riches of the land, and sky. Red is a reference to Canada. The inukshuk symbolizes the stone monuments which guide the people on the land an mark sacred and other special places. The star is Nitirqsuituq, the North Star and the traditional guide for navigation and more broadly, forever remains unchanged as the leadership of the elders in the community. An inukshuk is a man-like figure made of stones used by the Inuit when they go hunting to find their way and also to frighten caribous and lead them into a trap. Many of the flag propositions use this symbol.

Only five Canadian provinces have counties: Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Price Edward Island). British Columbia has Regional districts. While working on NAVA's Canadian municipal flags project, this caused confusion in at least one case: Alberta has some "counties", though these are large rural municipalities, not another level of administration. The situation is indeed less complex in other provinces, because Quebec is the largest, second most populated province, has vast northern territories, and has the oldest settlement history.

Highlights
  • In 2001, 30.4 percent of Canada's population lived in predominantly rural regions. Each Atlantic province, Saskatchewan, the Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories had more than half of their population living in predominantly rural regions. More than half of the population living in predominantly rural regions lived in rural metro-adjacent regions.

In 2001, more than 9 million Canadians lived in predominantly rural regions . This represented 30.4 percent of the population, a decrease of one percent from 1996. Figure 1 shows the slow shift in population structure toward predominantly urban regions and away from predominantly rural regions.
A distinguishing factor between different regions of rural Canada is distance from a major city. This note examines three types of predominantly rural regions: rural metro-adjacent regions, rural non-metro-adjacent regions, and rural northern and remote regions In 2001, 15 percent of the total Canadian population lived in rural metro-adjacent regions. Fourteen percent of Canadians lived in rural non-metro-adjacent regions and 2 percent in rural northern and remote regions (
