Island Saskatchewan Yukon Canada consists of 13 political divisions: 10 provinces and 3 territories. The territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
The major difference between a Canadian province and a Canadian territory is that a province is a creation of the Constitution Act (17 April 1982), while a territory is created by federal law. Thus, the federal government has more direct control over the territories, while provincial governments have many more competences and rights. A country of northern North America. Originally inhabited by various Native American peoples, mainland Canada was explored by the English and the French beginning in the late 15th century. The French established the first permanent settlement at Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal) in 1605 but gradually lost control of eastern Canada, which was ceded to England in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. The Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867 and extended to the western provinces in 1905; Newfoundland formally joined the federation in 1949. The Statute of Westminster (1931) confirmed Canada's status as an independent nation within the Commonwealth. Ottawa is the capital and Toronto the largest city. Population: 31,600,000. News Release Allocation Table February 1, 2005 GOVERNMENT ON TRACK TO DELIVER NEW DEAL FOR CITIES AND COMMUNITIES Ottawa, Ontario With $5 billion from the gas tax slated to benefit municipalities over a five-year period starting in 2005, the Minister told his provincial and territorial counterparts, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), as well as a representative of First Nations that allocation is based on a per capita distribution, with a targeted allocation for Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon and Prince Edward Island. This recognizes the need for less-populated jurisdictions to have sufficient funds for significant infrastructure investments, and the increased costs associated with infrastructure in Northern and remote areas. The allocation benefiting First Nations communities will be delivered in consultation with the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and First Nations stakeholders. In addition, bilateral agreements with the territories will include provisions for First Nations in the North. The gas tax funding is in addition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rebate announced in the 2004 Budget, which provided municipalities with $7 billion over 10 years. The Government of Canada is also delivering on the $1-billion Municipal-Rural Infrastructure Fund for smaller communities and the $4-billion Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.
