THE EARLY YEARS
There was once a world before this, and in it lived people who were not of our tribe. But the pillars of the earth collapsed, and all were destroyed. And the world was emptiness. Then two men grew up from a hummock of earth. They were born and fully grown all at once. And they wished to have children. A magic song changed one of them into a woman, and they had children. These were our earliest forefathers, and from them all the lands were peopled.

During the Cold War that followed, several east-west lines of radar stations were built for a Distant Early Warning system, and military manoeuvres were held. In 1950, a new patrol ship, the CD Howe, was launched, expanding the range of annual patrols, and dispensing medical and administrative services in the eastern Arctic. Tuberculosis patients were brought south, often for long periods; the children forgot their language and had a hard time returning to northern life. Meanwhile, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation initiated Inuktitut broadcasts during the 1950s, and later assisted in the creation of Inuit radio networks.

About The History Nunavut Map Interesting Facts The History by Kenn Harper In 1999, Canada's newest territory becomes a reality. Yet it already has a history, rich and colorful. It is the history of the Inuit who originally inhabited this land, by turns rich and sparse, and of the qallunaat Baffin Region Historians identify the Baffin coast with Helluland of the Norse sagas, and there may have been sporadic contacts between Norse and Inuit. But the recorded history of Baffin Island began in 1576 when Martin Frobisher, on an expedition in search of a Northwest Passage, discovered what he thought was gold in the bay that bears his name. The ore was worthless and Frobisher's encounters with the Inuit were not friendly. He seized four Inuit in 1576 and 1577 and took them to England where they quickly died. In 1585, John Davis, also in search of the Northwest Passage, explored Cumberland Sound; unlike Frobisher, his relations with Inuit were cordial. Henry Hudson, in 1610, followed the south coast of Baffin Island into Hudson Bay, and five years later, William Baffin and Robert Bylot mapped that coast. But Baffin Island itself was, at best, only a landmark and, at worst, an obstacle in the path of those searching for a Northwest Passage. Its coastline remained largely unexplored.

Canada commemorates persons and events for their national historic significance as well as places. So far, over 1500 places, persons and events have been commemorated by the Government of Canada There are 40 National Parks and over 150 National Historic Sites in Canada. Additional National Parks are planned for the coming years. At present, there are 2 National Marine Conservation Areas of Canada, with more planned for future designation. In the summer of 1999 Canada added another 80,000 sq.km. to the National Park system when it established 3 new parks in Nunavut Territory. These parks are described as "northern gems" and are named Surmilik, Auyuittuq and Quttinirtaaq. The Inuktitut names chosen for the parks illustrate the frozen terrain's major features: "place of glaciers," "land that never melts" and "top of the world"." There are 21 wildlife refuges and wild bird sanctuaries in all parts of Canada.

The History of the Nunavut Inuit
Ancient and Early History
5,000 years ago
  • The Tuniit or Dorset Culture peoples arrive in Alaska from Siberia, and then proceed to spread across the western Arctic and down the coasts of Greenland and Labrador. The Tuniit bring with them the bow-and-arrow and finely tailored skin clothing similar to that used by the Inuit and northern Siberian peoples today.
Between 3,000 and 2,000 years ago
  • The Inuit peoples appear in the southern Bering Sea or Northern Pacific
About 1,000 years ago
  • Some of these Inuit peoples moved eastward across Arctic Canada. The Inuit displace the Tuniit and establish the first Inuit settlements in Nunavut. They bring with them Kayaks, throwing harpoons, large umiat (skin covered transport boats), strong sinew-backed bows for hunting, and well insulated houses made from boulders and turf.

The major difference between a Canadian province and a Canadian territory is that a province is a creation of the Constitution Act (17 April 1982), while a territory is created by federal law. Thus, the federal government has more direct control over the territories, while provincial governments have many more competences and rights. The story and the tapes began circulating around the cassette underground in the early-eighties: an Inuit Radio station operated in Northern Canada by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was vacated by its regular staff due to a CBC strike, and the station was temporarily programmed by its Eskimo janitor and his buddies. The phrase "She Be She Strike" (CBC Strike) can be heard repeatedly on portions of the tape which are not excerpted here, but the truth may never be known until the language can be identified and a native speaker translates the entire recording, hint hint. The story isn't too far-fetched though; the CBC operates dozens of Inuit radio stations through it's Northern Service,

The study reported in this book was mandated under the terms of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (1993) to document Inuit knowledge of bowhead whales in the Nunavut Settlement Area. It fully meets its objective, providing a thorough and documented synthesis of local Inuit knowledge on the bowhead whale in Nunavut. The material was collected during 257 semidirective interviews, taperecorded in 18 different communities in Nunavut in 1995 and 1996. Small workshops followed in eight communities in 1996 and 1997. Overall, the authors have done a commendable job of gathering and presenting a huge volume of useful information on the bowhead whale in Nunavut. The semidirective interviews and follow-up workshops were structured around two main topic areas: the population ecology of bowheads (trends in abundance, distribution, and migration; changes in group size; occurrence of calves; ecology; and behaviour) and the cultural and traditional importance of bowhead whales to Inuit. The book also covers two other topics: the history of whaling and the future harvesting of bowhead whales.

Oct - Dec Speeches and articles Text of The Queen's address to the Legislative Assembly in Nunavut, Canada, 4 October 2002 Your Excellencies, Prime Minister, Honourable members, Elders, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is the greatest pleasure for Prince Philip and me to be back in Canada again for this visit to mark my Golden Jubilee. I am particularly pleased that our first stop is Iqaluit, and that we have been able to start this tour amongst the people who made us feel so welcome eight years ago when we visited Baffin Island.
But our first journey North had to wait until 1959. It was only then that we came to know a people whose heritage - and eloquent forms of cultural expression -are rooted among the earliest sentiments of this vast and beautiful land.

Welcome to Nunavut
In the Inuit language of Inuktitut, Nunavut means "Our Land". It is the name given to the ancestral home of the Inuit of the central and eastern Arctic, and to the new Territory of Nunavut in Canada's eastern Arctic. Though the creation of the Territory of Nunavut on April 1, 1999 represents a new chapter in the story of Canada's confederation, the story of Nunavut and the Inuit who make their lives there is an ancient one, going back over thousands of years of continuous habitation. The creation of the Territory of Nunavut and the finalization of the historic land claim settlement between the Nunavut Inuit and the Government of Canada adds a new dimension to the evolving history of both Nunavut and Canada.
