Key Concepts
The CANDU reactor (Canadian deuterium uranium) uses uranium, bundled in the form of uranium oxide fuel pellets, to produce electricity. (A comparison between CANDU reactors and other types of reactors would be an interesting optional extension topic.) Saskatchewan has abundant deposits of uranium ore which is refined for use in nuclear reactors. The refined uranium oxide fuel pellets are stacked into cylindrical rods. The rods are arranged into a fuel bundle which is then ready to be placed in special pressure tubes inside the reactor. The reactor vessel is called the calandria Nuclear reactors can not explode like a nuclear bomb. Even under a worst-case scenario, with a core meltdown , a critical mass of fuel would not be present and the fuel would burn into the ground. (This, of course, would lead to very serious consequences, including possible loss of life and environmental damage.) Refuelling can be done by removing fuel bundles from the pressure tubes and replacing them with new bundles. In a CANDU reactor this can be done without having to shut the reactor down.

Our Highest Priority in 2005 Nuclear Generation: Commercial nuclear power plants exist to provide electricity. We begin by stating the obvious to explain why we intend to make this section of the web site a top priority in 2005 and 2006. Starting with the generation data for 2005, we re-formatted the table showing nuclear generation for each reactor, and it is now available in both PDF or Excel versions. A less detailed table has been added to show nuclear generation for each of the 31 States with nuclear industries. This table is also available in PDF and Excel versions. Many of the changes in the near future will not be as visible: improving quality control, expanding data sources, automating files, and simplifying procedures. IAEA flag The International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA ), established as an autonomous organization on July 29 , seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for military purposes United States President Eisenhower envisioned, in his " Atoms for Peace " speech before the UN General Assembly in , the creation of this international body to control and develop the use of atomic energy. The IAEA is headquartered in Vienna Austria (at the Vienna International Centre ). The IAEA has 137 member states, whose representatives meet annually for the General Conference to elect 35 members to be included into the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors meets five times a year and is a consensual body which prepares decisions to be made by the General Conference. The 49th General Conference will be held from 26 to 30 September 2005 at the Austria Center Vienna, around the corner from the Agency's headquarters. Additionally, the IAEA maintains field and liaison offices in Toronto Geneva New York , and Tokyo , operates laboratories in Austria and Monaco and supports a research centre in Trieste Italy that is administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
