New nuclear energy data just released
The latest official figures released today by the NEA reveal that, at the start of 2005, there were 352 nuclear units in operation in 17 OECD member countries, seven less than the year before. However, despite this reduction, nuclear generating capacity in the OECD increased by almost 1% and nuclear-generated electricity increased by over 4% over the previous year. Nuclear Power for the 21st Century: Final Statement
The International Conference on Nuclear Power for the 21st Century was held in Paris on 21 and 22 March 2005, attended by Ministers, high-ranking officials and experts from 74 States and 10 international organizations. The conference was organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the Government of France in co-operation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the NEA. General information about nuclear energy Introduction Source : The following briefing notes were written to provide background information about nuclear power in Europe for journalists covering ENC 2002. They deal with four separate aspects of nuclear electricity generation:
  • Economics Environment Safety Waste Management.
  • There are strong economic and environmental arguments for building more nuclear power plants in Europe and other regions of the world. The power plants operate safely and reliably, producing large amounts of electricity at competitive prices. They are environmentally friendly, as they emit no greenhouse or acid rain gases and their waste is safely managed. The nuclear industry thereby makes a valuable contribution towards achieving Europe's economic, energy supply and environmental objectives. The nuclear energy option should be kept open and nuclear expertise should be retained, in order to:
    • achieve a viable and diverse energy mix control airborne pollution and hold down emissions of CO maintain security of energy supply and energy independence promote economic development and employment.

The plan is a vision covered in red tape, but won't likely impact investors' wallets in the near term. Most experts don't see a new nuclear plant being built for decades due to the onerous licensing process and environmental issues, such as storing radioactive waste. But Bush wants to add reactors to current plants and that may clear the bureaucracy faster. U.S. companies haven't been building plants here, but they've been active in more nuke-friendly countries and are ready to reap the benefits in the U.S. when the time comes. "If the U.S starts building nuclear plants in significant numbers, that would have to be looked at, but we're pretty active," says

    Nuclear energy in California (and imported from outside the state) accounted for 35,494 gigawatt/hours (GWh) of electricity in 2004, or 12.9 percent of electricity from all sources. The total dependable capacity of California's nuclear-supplied power is more than 5,300 megawatts, including the two operating nuclear power facilities in California and portions of nuclear facilities in other states owned by California electricity companies. There are two fundamental ways to release energy from nuclear reactions: fission and fusion of atomic nuclei. Electricity generating technologies based on fission are commercially available, whereas fusion is still in the early stages of research and development and is at present only a theoretical possibility for controlled power generation. Nuclear fission is the process of splitting the nuclei of atoms, which releases energy from within those atoms. Nuclear fusion is the process of joining, rather than splitting, such atomic particles with similar releases of energy.
    FISSION
    Of the several types of fission reactors, the most common type in the United States is light water reactors (so called because normal (light) water is used to cool the reactor core; some reactors use heavy water, which contains hydrogen atoms with an additional neutron in the nucleus), based on pressurized water reactor (PWR) and boiling water reactor (BWR) technology. PWRs and BWRs use uranium-235, a naturally-occurring radioactive isotope of uranium, as the fuel. As the nucleus of a uranium-235 atom is hit by a neutron, it splits into two smaller atoms of other elements, and releases energy and extra neutrons. Those neutrons hit more atoms of the original uranium-235, creating a fission chain reaction that releases more energy and neutrons.

    1976 General Resolution
    WHEREAS, the electric power industry in the US and Canada has proposed a huge program of constructing nuclear power plants as an answer to the problems caused by the growing shortage of petroleum and the pollution caused by old-fashioned coal-burning plants; and WHEREAS, scientific hopes that nuclear energy would provide a safe, nonpolluting source of power have been frustrated (at least temporarily) by the discovery of many unforeseen dangers to human life and health such as:
  • The high probability that many people would be exposed to low-level radiation, an eventuality which is known to cause birth defects and to result in deaths from cancer, usually after time delays of years;
  • The highly probable exposure of future generations to the lethal effects of the long-lived radioactive waste products inevitably produced by nuclear power plants;
  • Uncertainty in regard to the likelihood of catastrophic release of radioactive materials into the environment, because estimates of "nuclear safety" published by the nuclear power industry and its government sponsors neglect the dangers resulting from defects in construction and the lack of an adequate program for training nuclear power plant inspectors and operators; and WHEREAS, the ambitious plans for the construction of additional nuclear power plants involve a serious dilemma: either use up known reserves of uranium within a few decades, or convert to the still undeveloped breeder reactor, which is highly dangerous because it depends upon the production of plutonium in the reactor, and existing proposals for safeguarding the plutonium against theft or diversion for use by terrorists appear to require special pervasive security apparatus incompatible with American and Canadian traditions of freedom;
