Nuclear Chemistry at Michigan State University
Many opportunities exist for graduate education and post-doctoral research in nuclear chemistry. Research is primarily carried out at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL ), a modern laboratory exploiting superconducting technology that is located next to the Chemistry Building , right on campus. The NSCL is funded by the National Science Foundation to operate the Coupled Cyclotron Facility , along with the projectile-fragment separator. This combination can provide beams of the most exotic nuclei Ph.D. projects range from the production and decay properties of the most exotic nuclei (drip-line nuclei), measurement of nuclear magnetic moments and the production of spin polarized nuclei, to spectroscopy and nuclear structure of odd-odd nuclei.

The 20th century began with man knowing little about the atom. In the early century years, Rutheford unveiled the nucleus and Einstein related matter and energy. Then in the 1930's we learned of Chadwick's discovery of the neutron in the nucleus and the implications of releasing energy at the expense of mass. You will understand the underlying chemistry of Chadwick's nucleus. You will, in fact be able to read the original documents that James Chadwick wrote on his discovery of this elementary particle. By 1938, all the data was available in Europe for physicists to apply neutron initiated fission reactions for making weapons. But it was physicists and chemists in the United States that brought forth the first application of nuclear chemistry - the uranium and plutonium bombs employed at the end of World War II. Nuclear technology makes power, diagnoses illness, allows us to evaluate the past - and still provides weapons that may keep the world safe. But nuclear technology creates dangers of uncontrolled reactions and radiation from waste. These issues force us to evaluate the nucleus in our lives, balancing the good and the damaging.

It begins with the discovery of the neutron in 1932 and finishes with issues of nuclear waste and proliferation. Words and phrases in bold indicate terms defined in the text. The following annotated references will provide both you and the students with resources for addressing issues raised in the case studies. References Books Bickel, Lennard. The Deadly Element: The Story of Uranium . New York, NY: Stein and Day Publishers, 1979. Bickel takes the reader on a journey through time, from Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays to the creation of plutonium. The book is split into five "phases" and includes a final chapter on transmutation. The first two phases deal with early research involving physics, uranium, and fission. The final three phases focus on more advanced research on the use of uranium and plutonium and the people involved in the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. The book includes an appendix of principal scientists and their contributions. Walker, P.M.B. (Ed.).

    The University of Rochester Nuclear Chemistry group performs basic research in nuclear science. The present focus is on explorations of the dynamics of complex nuclear reactions and the response of nuclear matter in energetic collisions of light and heavy ions with heavy target nuclei. The research is sponsored by grants from the United States Department of Energy. The group has active experimental research programs at several national and international nuclear research facilities. Most of these programs are conducted in the framework of international collaborations. Educational opportunities are provided for training in experimental and theoretical nuclear science at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.     • Why are some nuclei stable and others not?
    • What are the limits of nuclear stability in terms of mass, charge to mass, angular momentum and excitation energy?
    • Why are some nuclei deformed and other not?
    • How are nuclei synthesized in the early universe and in stellar environments?
    • How does the density of states of the nuclear system evolve with excitation energy and angular momentum? Or in general, how can, or
      should, one describe the thermodynamics of small quantum systems?
    • What is the Equation of State (EoS) of nuclear matter (the material that comprises greater than 99% of the (non-dark) matter of the universe?
    On the applications side nuclear or radiochemistry is concerned with how to use radioisotopes for chemical, physical or medical studies.
    Examples in these three areas are studies of chemical kinetics, solar energy production and medical imaging, respectively.
