La Canasta Feedback July, 2005
I liked everything. For me, I liked the themes and all of the games. I also like the good treatment they give to one and to the children, how they treat everyone that comes here to the school. For me, I like the class a lot because it served for me to know more about how to play with my kids. I like how the teacher, Enedina, gave the class, and she is a teacher that is very good with us. This program for me was very good and interesting. I never imagined that with small, unsophisticated things kids could learn so much. For me, it was very interesting because my mom played with me but did not have an idea how to play with me. I want to thank everyone that makes this program possible. To Enedina, for the patience she has to explain words exactly so that everyone understands perfectly. To Eloisa for the patience she has to care for my child and teach me what skills my daughter has.

We have been getting used to our new homeroom, reacquainting ourselves with school routines, learning the ins-and-outs of traveling all over the building for classes, catching up with old friends, and getting to know our new classmates, as we welcomed Matthew Lyon, Kathleen Egan, Alex Paulina, and Alvin Wong to St. Mary School. We also welcomed our new teachers, Mr. Ferdella (math) and Mr. Gannon (music) and welcomed back Mrs. Larson (math). The school day for students in grades 5-8 begins at 8:15 a.m., with the prayer bell at 8:25. There will be a 10-minute homeroom period to start each day. During this time, we will take attendance, get organized for the day, and hold brief class meetings and discussions. Mr. Moakley and I will be in the 6th grade room for this homeroom time, as well as before school, after lunch and at dismissal. Students arriving after 8:15 a.m. will be marked tardy. Please make every effort to be on time, as students will not want to miss homeroom period. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at (508) 842-1601 and I will return your call as soon as I can.

Title: 61*: Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle and One Great Summer Author: Leon Maris Review: 61* is about two guys named Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, two great Yankees baseball players going for Babe Ruth’s record of 60 home runs in a season. They were racing towards the top. They were gonna hit 64 for Roger and 59 for Mickey. But there were rainy days that didn’t count. There was a great fall by Mickey in the outfield (he played right field) and he suggered the rest of his career with a leg injury, with 49 homers. Other people hated Roger because he was a country boy from Kansas and not a city boy. They would throw chairs at him from the crowds. Roger lost hair from stress. Roger hit 59, finally only two more to go to beat Ruth. But one of Babe’s friends recalled that Babe did this in a certain amount of days. He finally got it—61 home runs in a reason. He had two more days left of the season. He give in and hit no more. He held this record ‘til 1995. Now Mark Maquire has it. He raced Sammy Sosa. That’s what 61* is about. Anthropology 2 - Introductory Cultural Anthropology (Winter 2000)
This is a good intro class for anthropology. Prof. Mines' area of study is South India and the exotic and beautiful pictures he shows are very captivating. This class gives a general overview of the many cultures of the world. I learned a lot from this class. Every lecture was interesting. The honors section with the professor is very interesting and helpful for the course. This honors section allows for a lot of self expression and intelligent dialogue. I highly recommend this class on basis of the professor and the study material itself. Posted by Neena Chauhan Anthropology 2 - Introductory Cultural Anthropology (Fall 2000)
Dr. Mines is a very interesting and entertaining teacher for this introductory anthropology class. He will definitely show you what a survey course is about, covering the whole realm of Anthropology and all the parts that go into it. He is full of stories which are always fun to listen to but pay attention because they will appear on the tests also. If you don't want to see a giraffe getting killed then you can skip a lecture. We saw three or four movies in Anth 2 which were interesting. Reading Nisa (required text) is perverted and fun but the other required reading was tough (I didn't quite make it through) You can still do well in this class without all of the reading but a good grade requires that you know all the material well and go to every lecture because there are things that you just can't get out of a friends notes.

photos: Khaled El-Fiqi As a married woman with career responsibilities and multiple home chores, notably school-age children and homework supervision, I sometimes feel overwhelmed. I, therefore, leapt recently at a sudden opportunity to escape. My trip to New Kalabsha and Abu Simbel without the family was unhurried enough to allow me to regain my cool, at the same time it was educational enough to inspire a new burst of enthusiasm to greet the new year. Whether at work or not, my interest lies in Egyptology. So was it by chance that, no sooner had I arrived in Aswan and settled down in my hotel, I found myself with a team of Egyptologists or are we automatically drawn to one another? After a while, and although it was already after 9pm, we decided to take a boat to Kalabsha temple which lies on the shores of Lake Nasser. We crossed the High Dam to the western bank of the Nile and assembled at the pier. Some 20 of us, mostly professional archaeologists, including a team responsible for upgrading and developing the New Kalabsha area, clambered aboard three small motor boats, more like fishing boats than tourist vessels.

Miss McCombs Welcome to Room 18!!! Hello! Welcome to your child's final year at Meadowview Elementary School. I am excited for a fun and productive school year!!! Meet Miss McCombs : I spent the first 22 years of life in Bloomington, Illinois with my mom, dad, and older sister. I then graduated from Illinois State University in May, 2000. During my student teaching I moved up to the suburbs. I have lived in the surrounding area now for six years. In June, 2002, I received my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Illinois. This is my sixth year teaching at Meadowview. I have previously taught the third and fourth grades. I am so excited to spend the 2005-2006 school year with you and your child. This is going to be an unforgettable year!!! Curriculum notes Social Studies: This year, Mr. Vervack will be teaching both Sixth Grade classes the social studies curriculum. Our first unit will cover the beginnings of civilization and the study of Mesopotamia. We will study Ancient Egypt and will continue on to the study of Nubia. As a result of their work in social studies and reading, the students will be expected to write an expository essay on the gifts of the Egyptian civilization. Reading : Again this year, the students will be participating in the Accelerated Reading program. At the beginning of the quarter, the S.T.A.R. test will be administered. Once those results are in, each student will be given a point goal to work toward. During the quarter, the students are expected to read at their ZPD level (The level at which success can be attained independently.) Once the book is completed, the student will take a comprehension test on the computer. Success on these tests determines the number of points the students will earn. How can you help? Encourage you child to read at least 30 minutes a day and discuss their reading material with you. In some cases, you may want to read the books yourself.
