Nubia: Africa's Lost World
The first slab of stone was amazing enough all on its own. Its beautiful carvings had been preserved under sand and rocks for nearly 2,000 years. But it was only the beginning. American archaeologist (ar-kee- ol -o-gist) Timothy Kendall and his team uncovered 25 carved slabs earlier this year in the African country of Sudan. The team laid them out like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. They formed a beautiful picture: a starry sky with birds flying into the distance. The importance of these slabs goes far beyond their beauty. Perhaps they will help unlock the mysteries of an ancient black African civilization called Nubia. One of the biggest mysteries: When did Nubia's civilization begin? Many researchers think it is as old as its famous neighbor, Egypt. More Pyramids Than In Egypt
Many people have never heard of Nubia. Researchers have focused on Egypt and its treasures. But Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt. Why have archaeologists waited so long to study Nubia closely? One reason may be racial prejudice. Some scientists did not believe Nubia had its own distinct, great culture. They saw Nubia as just an offshoot of Egypt. "They didn't believe black Africa was capable of producing high civilization," says Kendall.

Africa's Lost World
Recent Discoveries Shed New Light On An Ancient Black Civilization
The first slab of stone was amazing enough. Beautifully carved, preserved under sand and rubble for nearly 2,000 years, the piece was clearly an exciting discovery. But it was only the beginning. American archaeologist Timothy Kendall's team, working in the African country of Sudan earlier this year, discovered a second, similar slab. And then another, and another after that, until there were 25 in all. The workers laid them in the sand like the pieces of an ancient jigsaw puzzle. When Kendall and his team fit the pieces together, they formed a beautiful picture: stars set against a sky colored with traces of blue, and crowned vultures flying into the distance. But the importance of these stones goes far beyond their beauty. Kendall and others hope they will help unlock the mysteries of an ancient African civilization called Nubia that may be as old as Egyptian civilization. Dietrich Wildung, curator of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, Germany, says the slabs, along with more finds that are expected to follow, represent "the discovery of a new dimension of the ancient world." Emerging From Egypt's Shadow
Many people have never heard of Nubia. That's because researchers have tended to ignore this ancient African land and focus instead on its neighbor to the north, Egypt. Much of what we know about early civilization in northern Africa comes from Egyptian pyramids, writings, mummies and other artifacts.

Suffering in Sudan
Over the last month or so, the global community has been hearing more and more about the escalating civil war in Sudan more specifically, in the nation's region referred to as Darfur (alternatively spelled, Darfor). At least 30,000 Sudanese, mostly black Africans, have been killed. Thousands more have been displaced from their homes, many fleeing across the western border into Chad, where aid has been hampered by torrential rains and sandstorms. The United Nations has called it, "The world's worst humanitarian crisis." Essentially, the conflict lies between Sudan's two major ethnic groups the Arabs and the black Africans, which include hundreds of ethnic divisions and language groups. There are as many as 90 African and Arab tribes and clans in Darfur alone. For centuries, primarily black African farmers have been living in the area's lush highlands. The Fur, or "For," tribe dominated the region, giving it the name Darfur, meaning "Homeland of the Fur." More recently, nomadic Arab herders have been encroaching on these lands.

Africa and the Middle East Quinton Priest Fall Semester, 2005
Course Description
[Back]
This class is one of four designed to provide students with an opportunity for detailed study in a non-Western area of their choice. Admittedly, Africa and the Middle East is a broad subject area for a semester course. However, we will be able to cover a range of topics that will give students an acquaintance with and understanding of the main historical trends and primary cultural and geographic features of two truly complex and little understood world regions. The course will begin with a look at the geography of Africa south of the Sahara. Students will learn about the physical geography of the continent as well as human-environmental inter-action that has helped to define the human diversity found there. Skills will be taught as well as knowledge. Thus students will learn how to create area-value maps, charts and graphs and other aids to learning about the region they will be studying. An overview of African history from ancient times to the present will follow the geography unit. Several case studies will enrich the African history units: Mansa Musa and the Kingdom of Mali for Iron Age Africa; colonial Kenya will cover the colonial period and African independence movement; Biafra and the Nigerian civil war, Apartheid in South Africa, or the Eritrean independence movement will cover post-independence; and population problems in present-day Africa will help link Africa to the world population crisis. African arts, music, and literature, and its world impact will also be discussed.
