Ancient Africa Easier - The continent of Africa was the home of early prehistoric man. Over the years, many different people have lived there. Until recently, the history of those cultures has been largely ignored by modern civilization. Harder - Africa has been called the "birthplace of the human race." The oldest evidence of human-like creatures and people found anywhere in the world are the bones and other fossils discovered at many sites in eastern and southern Africa. From this evidence, most scientists have concluded that the earliest human beings lived about 2 million years ago in eastern Africa. The crude stone tools made by these people gave the Stone Age its name. In time, the Stone Age culture spread to other continents. The fertile soils of the Nile Valley supported some of the earliest and richest farming com

1. Ivory fragment of a cult object, 1680-1580 B.C., Kemet (Paris: Louvre). Two jackel masked figures flank an ankh symbol, with hieroglyphs. The 2nd Intermediate period is marked by the emergence of vital regional cultures and local dynasties, including Hyksos, Lybian, and Nubian rulers. 2. Ivory fragment with scenes probably associated with a cult, probably 1680-1580 B.C. (Paris: Louvre). A figure that is half animal and half human, with a crocodile on its back, approaches a bound kneeling figure. To the left is a giraffe (?), and to the right a seated figure of a man with a lion's mask and tail.
The Empire of Kemet
2. Painted limestone stela from reign of King Thutmose III, probably first set up at Buhen (London: British Museum). 61 cm. tall. The real military confrontation between Kerma and Kemet took place under Thutmose I in 1488 and resulted in the end of the royal line of Kerma and probably the destruction of its capital so that Kemet's power could be extended to the Fourth Cataract. Nevertheless, local chiefs continued to resist for a half century until Thutmose III's final pacification of Nubia in the mid-15th century. Thutmose built a provincial capital just north of the Fourth Cataract, called Napata, to administer all Nubia. 3. Faience pottery decorated with blue lotuses, from Sesebi in Upper Nubia (London: British Museum). 14.5 cm. In second half of the 18th dynasty, because of the shift south of the military frontier, the fortresses of Lower Nubia gave way to towns and temples, and new settlements emerged such as Amara West and Sesebi. These walled towns were temple-centered and the locale of administration, mining, or military personnel.

Burial from the Early Phase of Kerma (ca. 2500 - 2050 B.C.). The typical grave was an earthern tumulus with a burial pit beneath. The body was dressed in leather, sandals, and jewelry, and laid on ox-hide bed. Grave goods included inverted bowls (for a funeral meal?), remains of sacrifices (including many human sacrifices in the case of the kings), and weapons (which indicates that Kerma's survival in the face of Kemet depended on a powerful military). This grave is that of a young archer who holds his bow and bowstring in his right hand. Around his head was a fillet to hold a tall feather, which was typical of Nubian dress. 5. Bronze dagger from Kerma. Classic phase (ca. 1750 to 1600 B.C.) (London: British Museum). Technologically at same level as Kemet, but the shape is distinctive of the civilization of Kerma. The high quality of this bronze is due in part to the use of an advanced type of kiln that reached very high temperatures.

By Paul Barton The earliest people in the Americas were people of the Negritic African race, who entered the Americas perhaps as early as 100,000 years ago, by way of the bering straight and about thirty thousand years ago in a worldwide maritime undertaking that included journeys from the then wet and lake filled Sahara towards the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, and from West Africa across the Atlantic Ocean towards the Americas.
According to the Gladwin Thesis, this ancient journey occurred, particularly about 75,000 years ago and included Black Pygmies, Black Negritic peoples and Black Australoids similar to the Aboriginal Black people of Australia and parts of Asia, including India.

ANCIENT AFRICAN KINGDOMS PRODUCED

The ancient West African coastal and interior Kingdoms occupied an area that is now covered with dense vegetation but may have been cleared about three to four thousand years ago. This includes the regions from the coasts of West Africa to the South, all the way inland to the Sahara. A number of large kingdoms and empires existed in that area. According to Blisshords Communications, one of the oldest empires and civilizions on earth existed just north of the coastal regions into what is today Mauritania. It was called the Zingh Empire and was highly advanced. In fact, they were the first to use the red, black and green African flag and to plant it throughout their territory all over Africa and the world.

Dialog on the origin of name "Nubia"
From the Nubia list, January, 1996
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 1996 01:58:35 SLT
[Text slighly edited. HB] All netters (maskag jelo) There is no consensus among historians about the origin of the word "Nubia" and how the area that is known today as Nubia has come to acquire its name. Is the name "modern" or date back to ancient history? Does the name apply to some parts of Nubia or was it more extensively applied in former times? Has it any relation to Kush or Meroites? The word Nubia conjures up all these and more nostalgia in the mind of many, particularly, Nubians. To them it means identity, past glories, present dilemma, and a hopefull and glorious future. How did the area come to be known as Nubia, and why did it persist until now? This is important because some historians claim that there is no such name as Nubia, and that "Kush" is the only name that was known to ancient people. Then where did it come from? Certainly, it has't come out of the blue. It must have an origin, especialy since it applies to an area with a distinctive culure and language and a civilisation that dates back to the dawn of history, a civilization of its own, not isolated, but influencing and getting influenced by others. To give a tentative answer to these questions, here is a rundown of opinions about the name Nubia, it's origins and meaning:-
