With a history and traditions which can be traced to the dawn of civilisation the Nubians settled along the banks of the Nile from Aswan in the south of Egypt to the 6th cataract just south of Khartoum (capital of Sudan). Along this great river they developed one of the oldest and greatest civilisations in Africa. Until they lost their last kingdom (Christian Nubia) only 5 centuries back the Nubians remained as the main rivals to the other great African civilisation of Egypt. A great civilisation and great people who deserved equal or even more fame than their rival Egyptian civilisation instead were overlooked and its findings and monuments were attributed to their rivals. Belatedly recognised the Nubian culture and history is one of the main concern of archaeologists, scholars, museums and universities world wide nowadays ..... The Kingdom of Cush Ancient kingdom of Nubia in today's northern Sudan whose rulers conquered southern Egypt in the 8th century BC and established a capital at Napata. Nubia covers an area stretching along the Nile valley from the sixth cataract in the south to the first cataract in the north, which marks the southern border of pharaonic Egypt. Because no Nubian languages are recorded before about the second century B.C., the cultures of ancient Nubia are known primarily through archaeological remains supplemented by ancient Egyptian textual references to places such as Wawat and Kush, and to peoples such as the Nehesyu and the Medjayu. The names given to the different cultures and cultural phases have been assigned by modern archaeologists and historians. The A-Group culture is driven out of Lower Nubia by the Egyptians. During this period, Egypt dominates Nubia between the first and third cataracts, conducting periodic raids into Upper Nubia to the south. Egypt's purpose is to control trade in raw materials and to exploit the rich deposits of stone and gold in the deserts of Lower Nubia. To this end, Egyptian trading and mining settlements are established as early as Egypt's Dynasty 4 (ca. 2500 B.C.). In the late Old Kingdom (ca. 2200 B.C.), Egyptian texts document a warlike people called the Medjayu, who live in the eastern deserts of Upper and Lower Nubia. These nomads have alternately peaceful and hostile relations with the more settled populations along the Nile, both in Nubia and Egypt. Highly valued for their military skills, the Medjayu serve as mercenaries in the Egyptian army and desert police force from the late Old Kingdom. The Medjayu, a nomadic people, have left no identifiable archaeological remains earlier than the second millennium B.C.

The earliest permanent settlements belong to this period. Their occupation is identified from the remains of huts, hearths, granaries, and nonportable stone tools for grinding grains. People had now begun to exploit domesticated plants and animals, although animal bones indicate that hunting of birds, small game, and fish continues to be important to the economy. Stone tools remain significant components of the material culture, but tools of bone and ceramic vessels are now used as well. At the site of Merimde Beni Salama in the Delta, a representation of a human face is the earliest known example of sculpture from ancient Egypt. The most important cultural changes associated with this period are reflected in representations on objects. The scenes on large, ceremonial slate palettes indicate that one individual holds significant power. This individual is depicted with numerous symbols linked to Egyptian kingship in pharaonic times. The scenes are carved in some of the earliest known raised relief, and palettes as well as small ivory labels or tags display the first stages of hieroglyphic writing. Symbols of various pharaonic deities occur on palettes, tags, and a few three-dimensional objects. Hierakonpolis is the largest Predynastic settlement and may be the center of political control, but the sites of Naqada and Abydos are significant as well. It is now known that Abydos was the burial ground of late Predynastic leaders, testifying to the importance of this region.

What is the Ancient World? Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Sumer, Nubia, Persia, Byzantium, Turkey? Or is it Assyrians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Hittites, Akkadians, Etruscans, Minoans? Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

BLACK KINGDOMS OF THE NILE EPISODE
    By Timothy Kendall
In the 1820s, the Western world was thrilled to hear news of the rediscovery of the monuments of ancient Nubia - or "Kush," as it was called in the Bible. The ruins, hundreds of miles south of Egypt in the Sudan, had been reported almost simultaneously by individual British, French, and American travellers, whose excited descriptions and glorious illustrations of temples and pyramid fields delighted scholars and reawakened interest in this mysterious African kingdom. Greek traditions told of Memnon, a legendary Nubian king who had fought in the Trojan War; they spoke of Nubia's people, who were the "tallest and handsomest on earth," and whose piety was so great that the gods preferred their offerings to those of all other men. They also knew that historical Nubian kings had once conquered Egypt and ruled it for sixty years and that their dynasty was counted as Egypt's Twenty-fifth. The Greeks, however, did not call these people "Nubians" or "Kushites," as we do today; they called them Aithiopes ("Ethiopians"), which in Greek meant "Burnt-Faced Ones." They knew perfectly well that Nubians were black-skinned, as are the Sudanese of the same regions today. During the 1840s, the great German egyptologist, Karl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884) led an expedition to record the monuments of Egypt and Sudan for the King of Prussia. On his return, he asserted confidently that the Greek term "Ethiopian," when referring to the ancient civilized people of Kush, did not apply to "negroes," but was used to describe reddish-skinned people closely related to the Egyptians, who "belonged to the Caucasian race." Again, in 1852, when the American diplomat Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) visited Sudan and gazed upon the temple carvings of sumptuously clad gods and rulers with clearly African features, he also found it inconceivable that they could have been created by black-skinned Africans. Rather, he asserted, echoing Lepsius, they must have been created by Egyptians or by immigrants from India or Arabia, or, in any case, "by an offshoot ... of the race to which we belong."

    Ancient African States
Ancient Africa's many cultural complexes are often forgotten or slighted in the annals of history. While Egypt may be discussed, and most ancient Nubia sometimes mentioned, little is known of the many other states that have contributed to African history. The Medieval states of West Africa, the ancient state of Zimbabwe and the antiquity and power of Abysinnia are little known features of history. On this page we will provide links to pages dealing with these ancient but fortunately not forgotten cultures.
Up to the point of European contact, African states continued to flourish. When they (European navigators) reached the Bay of Guinea and alighted at Vaida, the captains were astonished to find well-planned streets bordered for several leagues by two rows of trees; for days they traversed a countryside covered by magnificent fields, inhabited by men in colorful attire that they had woven themselves! The great personalities of this historic time frame recorded in Egyptian art and literature compare favorably with any personality in recorded history. The three most illustrious rulers of the New Kingdom being Tutmose III, Hatshepsut, and Akhenaten. Portrait of Akhenaten The 18th and 17th centuries BCE had seen the gradual occupation of the Egyptian Delta by immigrants called the Hyksos, or foreign princes. The exact origins of these foreigners is a debate among scholars of ancient Egypt however it was the New Kingdom Rulers who solidified the southern Kingdom in its trading and military alliances with Nubia enabling the New Kingdom Rulers to overcome and expel the Hyksos from the Delta starting with Ahmose I. The final decisive military campaign against the Hyksos was conducted by Tutmose III. The story of the Hyksos, their origins and their influences in Egyptian History is a story to long to be told here.
