The Medical History Society of Nova Scotia is a charitable organization whose goals include the housing of medical artifacts, archives and books which relate to the medical heritage of Nova Scotia. This information dates as far back as 1605.
From the collections and fonds, our Society can offer insights into Nova Scotia's medical past. Our archives include day books dating back to the 1700's. We house as well, medical texts which describe long and sometimes forgotten techniques. Our activities in 2000-2002 have increased to meet a growing interest in and demand for information and artifacts which can recapture something of our fascinating medical history.

Canada was founded by two founding nations, French and English. The French established the first North American French Settlement at Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605. They were eventually deported from Nova Scotia beginning in 1755. We know them as the Acadians. (Cajuns in USA) The first English settlement in Pictou County was by the Philadelphia Company in 1767 when they sent thirty-five people, six families of Scottish and Irish-Scottish origin on the ship Betsey from Philadelphia and Maryland to settle on their land in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The second wave came from Scotland to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1773 when the Hector arrived to a heavily forested and unsettled land. The earlier immigrants were tradesmen and self supporting. Later arrivals came because the Lords in Scotland who owned the land made them leave, know as the infamous Clearances, as it was more profitable to raise sheep than be paid for the lands use by the tenants. My family can trace their Genealogy roots to both of these early settlements and founding peoples.

History of the Guild
Next time you walk past the Paper Chase on Blowers Street in Halifax, stop for a moment. If you have your camera - take one of this building for the record. What you will be recording is the birthplace of the predecessor of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. In November 1947, on the second floor of this edifice, which was then the Camera Store of the Maritimes, owner Edward A. Bollinger convened a meeting of photographers with a view to formalizing a photo group. Present on that historic evening were: Russell E. Hefler , who was elected president, Peggy Wright and Cyril Smith, the first secretary and treasurer respectively. At their next meeting just a month later agreement was reached to call the organization, "The Color Photographic Guild of the Maritimes". They wasted little time. In the first month of the new year members held a studio night and, according to the record, arrived in costumes and theatrical makeup. Perhaps a celebration of their success, and an opportunity to photograph indoors safe from the January winds. Those photographic pioneers enjoyed celebrating and did it with class. Their first annual banquet was held in the Georgian Lounge of the Lord Nelson Hotel. That would be like having our annual banquet this year at one of the Sheraton's fancy ballrooms - maybe not a bad idea for the 50th anniversary. Early day Guild members religiously participated in planned

The very idea of a “voice for survivors” in Nova Scotia started in 1994 by members of a Halifax based breast cancer support group. These women, many still dealing with treatment and fatigue, passionately expressed an interest in starting an action group that would voice the concerns and needs of women affected by breast cancer. The group wanted to address the obstacles faced by women, their families and friends, who were living with breast cancer—things such as delayed diagnosis, not enough information, social/psychological issues, poor communication with the health care team and lack of support. Inspired by other action groups in Canada, they decided to call themselves Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia. Members began by raising awareness, lobbying and meeting with politicians and health care administrators, raising funds and doing public speaking. In 1996, BCANS co-sponsored, co-organized and attended a workshop on Women, Breast Cancer and the Environment. The BCANS website first came into existence in 1997. Unknown, to anyone at the time, this web site would grow to become a world leader for online support, receiving up to 1000 hits per day. Also in 1997, BCANS helped bring in the film “Environmental Links to Breast Cancer” to Mount Saint Vincent University for a showing, along with native activist Edith Johnson.

Site Map Welcome to the Nursing History Digitization Project This site explores the history of nursing education in Nova Scotia from 1890, when the Victoria General Hospital established the first nursing school in Nova Scotia, to the late twentieth century. Throughout much of the twentieth century there were two main routes for becoming a graduate registered nurse. A student nurse could either attend a hospital based nursing program, such as the ones established at the Victoria General Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary , or they could attend a university based nursing program, such as the ones established at Dalhousie University and Mount Saint Vincent University Both routes developed and operated quite differently, with much debate as to which route produced the most competent nurse. This site explores both the general history of nursing education and also the history of a number of nursing schools in Nova Scotia. The development of the nursing schools are explored by integrating narrative text with photographs and documents from the schools.

Our History Coincidentally, this decision would prove to be a pivotal turning point for Clarence Thompson because on April 15, 1934 he embarked on a journey with his first load of freight. The trip was from the corner of Sackville and Bedford Row in Halifax, and was destined for Middleton. It was only a 100-mile jaunt from Halifax to Middleton, however at the time the roads were primarily gravel, so the trip took four "bumpy" hours. Like a lot of success stories, Clarence's came from humble beginnings and the first few years were characterized by long hours, hard work, and low pay. By 1935 Clarence had an addition to his fleet when his brother Balsor came aboard. Over the course of the next few years the brothers had a birds-eye view of the growing success of their hard work, and saw it purchase new vehicles as well as begin to hire more employees. more Our History Our Services Mission Statement

Introduction
The word gypsum is derived from the Greek gypsos, meaning chalk. Anhydrite is merely gypsum without water. These minerals are formed through the evaporation of salt waters are frequently found interbedded with limestone, dolomite and shale. Deposits of gypsum and anhydrite are found worldwide on all continents with the possible exception of Antarctica. Back to Top
Uses of Gypsum and Anhydrite
Approximately 75 per cent of the gypsum used in North America is calcined, meaning that three-quarters of the water has been removed by heating to form stucco or plaster of Paris. Calcined gypsum is one of the most common building materials in the world. It is used for interior wall partitions and ceilings, either as plaster or in prefabricated products. Regular wallboard and type-x wallboard with its fire-resistant characteristics make up over three-quarters of the market for calcined gypsum. Minor uses for calcined gypsum include dental plaster, modelling casts, moulds, surgical casts and drilling muds. Uncalcined gypsum and anhydrite are used in much the same way. After crushing and grinding, their principal use is as a set retarder for cement. When a small amount of gypsum or anhydrite is added to Portland cement, the set of the cement is slowed, but the tensile strength is not lessened. Another important use is in the agriculture industry where gypsum and anhydrite have a beneficial effect on many crops. They can decrease the salinity of salty soils, improve the permeability of clayey soils and provide sulphur, calcium and catalytic support in order to decrease fertilizer use and maximize crop production.
