April 5, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HALIFAX - Nova Scotians with disabilities will be able to more easily participate in the labour market due to a new agreement signed today by the Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister of Social Development Canada, and the Honourable David Morse, Nova Scotia Minister of Community Services. "Canada must take full advantage of the talents and abilities of all of its citizens" said Minister Frulla. "This agreement is designed to help Canadians with disabilities overcome the obstacles they face in entering the labour market and ensure that they are able to participate fully in our economy and society. I am so pleased to work with my provincial counterpart on this national priority." "The agreement signed today is an important step in the right direction in our efforts to improve the quality of life for all Nova Scotians with disabilities," said Minister Morse. "We look forward to further strengthening and broadening opportunities for these Nova Scotians and welcome additional federal dollars to support these efforts."

    Introduction
The word gypsum is derived from the Greek gypsos, meaning chalk. Anhydrite is merely gypsum without water. These minerals are formed through the evaporation of salt waters are frequently found interbedded with limestone, dolomite and shale. Deposits of gypsum and anhydrite are found worldwide on all continents with the possible exception of Antarctica. Back to Top
    Uses of Gypsum and Anhydrite
Approximately 75 per cent of the gypsum used in North America is calcined, meaning that three-quarters of the water has been removed by heating to form stucco or plaster of Paris. Calcined gypsum is one of the most common building materials in the world. It is used for interior wall partitions and ceilings, either as plaster or in prefabricated products. Regular wallboard and type-x wallboard with its fire-resistant characteristics make up over three-quarters of the market for calcined gypsum. Minor uses for calcined gypsum include dental plaster, modelling casts, moulds, surgical casts and drilling muds. Uncalcined gypsum and anhydrite are used in much the same way. After crushing and grinding, their principal use is as a set retarder for cement. When a small amount of gypsum or anhydrite is added to Portland cement, the set of the cement is slowed, but the tensile strength is not lessened. Another important use is in the agriculture industry where gypsum and anhydrite have a beneficial effect on many crops. They can decrease the salinity of salty soils, improve the permeability of clayey soils and provide sulphur, calcium and catalytic support in order to decrease fertilizer use and maximize crop production.

Things to Do in Nova Scotia
FACTS ABOUT NOVA SCOTIA Nova Scotia is one of 10 provinces (and three territories) in Canada.
It lies on the east coast of the country and is almost completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Believe it or not, millions of years ago Nova Scotia was actually part of Africa. When the earth's crust shifted and Africa and North America separated, Nova Scotia got left behind.
One big part of Nova Scotia is actually a huge island, called Cape Breton Island.
Our neighbouring Canadian provinces are New Brunswick (which is bigger) and Prince Edward Island (which is smaller). Together, we are often called the Maritime provinces of Canada.
The nearest American state is Maine. It takes about four hours to drive from Nova Scotia through New Brunswick to the Maine border.
Most of the province is covered with forests and lakes and most larger towns are along the seacoast.

In 1783 Digby was settled by a hearty band of United Empire Loyalists led by Rear Admiral, Sir Robert Digby, Captain of the HMS Atalanta, a 24 gun Brigantine, leading the North American Squadron.
In appreciation of Adm. Digby's leadership and guidance our early settlers from New York and New England named their new town in honour of their benefactor.
The Town of Digby has been an active fishing and lumber producing community throughout the years. Famous for the delicious scallops harvested from our local waters, spectacular vistas of The Annapolis Basin from our waterfront, clear crisp air, and of course the incredible tides (28 to 35 ft.) in our harbour, we offer our visitors a wonderful opportunity to visit or to settle in for a relaxed way of life.
Digby is central to many activities, including historic sites, some of the best Whale Watching in North America, lovely parks, hiking trails, and our own local championship golf course. Located in Digby are a variety of accommodations, cafes, restaurants, shops, and a full service marina for our yachting visitors, including the services of an active shipyard for major repairs if needed.

    Archdiocese of Halifax
(HALIFAXIENSIS) Jesuits In 1801 Father Edmund Burke left Quebec to enter upon his useful work in Halifax, which at that time formed part of the Diocese of Quebec and so remained until it was made a vicariate in 1817. Father Burke was consecrated Vicar Apostolic of Nova Scotia in 1818, and filled the office until his death in 1820. It was not until 1827 that his successor, Rt. Rev. William Fraser, was appointed. The vicariate was erected into a diocese 15 Feb., 1842, and was called the Diocese of Halifax. It included the whole of Nova Scotia. In 1844 the diocese was divided; Bishop Fraser became Bishop of the new Diocese of Arichat; and Bishop WILLIAM WALSH, who had been Bishop Fraser's coadjutor, "with the right of succession", became Bishop of Halifax. In 1852 Halifax was made an archdiocese. Archbishop Walsh administered the affairs of his see until his death in 1858. He was scholarly and devout, and although at that time the feeling between Protestants and Catholics was occasionally somewhat bitter, the "British Colonist", a newspaper owned and edited by
