II. ETHNOGRAPHY
When the European colonists first came to Nova Scotia they found the country inhabited by a tribe of Indians known as the Micmacs. These savages were converted to Christianity by the early French missionaries. Their descendants, numbering 1542 at the time of the last official census (1901), belong to the Catholic Church. They live principally on reservations set aside for them by the Government. The duty of caring for the Indians has been assigned by the British North American Act to the Parliament of Canada. The descendants of the French settlers form an important body. They numbered at the time of the last census 45,161. They also are Catholics and are noted for their industry and frugality. The Germans form another important element. They are descended from the body of German settlers who arrived in Nova Scotia shortly after the founding of Halifax and in 1753 removed to the County of Lunenburg. Principally Lutherans and Anglicans , they are thrifty and industrious. The English settlers came in after the defeat of the French, and after the Revolutionary War from twenty to thirty thousand loyalists left the United States and settled in Nova Scotia. Later on came accessions from Ireland and Scotland. At the last census these last-mentioned races were estimated as follows: English, 159,753; Scottish, 143,382; Irish; 54,710. There were also 5984 negroes in the province. They are descended from slaves who were brought to Nova Scotia before the abolition of slavery in British dominions. The total population of the Province of Nova Scotia in 1901 was 459,572, of whom 129,578 were returned as Catholics.

Nova Scotia Field Class Aptly described on a provincial vehicle license plate as "Canada's Ocean Playground", the province of Nova Scotia is almost a peninsula: to the west is the Bay of Fundy, to the north the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and to the south and east the Atlantic Ocean. The seas play a major role in the physical geography of Nova Scotia, moderating the climate, shaping the coastline and leaving a sedimentary record of changing sea levels. During the ice ages, Nova Scotia was overridden by glaciers whose sediments and erosional features provide a record of ice-age history. Sussex's field class to Nova Scotia examines aspects of its glacial history, sea-level change and coastal geomorphology. Highlights of the trip include visits to:
    • the Bay of Fundy , location of the world's highest tidal range (=15 m)
    • Peggy's Cove , a scenic area of glacially-eroded granite on the Atlantic coast:
    • Joggins , on the Chignecto Peninsula, where three till sheets are superimposed:
    • Parrsboro , where an outwash plain and delta is dissected into fluvial terraces
    • the Bedford Institute of Oceanography at Dartmouth, Canada's largest centre for ocean research, and among the most-respected research institutions in the world.

Yarmouth County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia The name Yarmouth appeared as the name of a projected township in Nova Scotia in a document in 1759, perhaps because it was the name of a favourite of George II . The same name was applied to a new county in 1836 when Yarmouth County was cut off from Shelburne County . The description of Yarmouth County was modified in 1846. In 1856 Argyle was established as a separate district, with the District of Argyle comprising the Township of Argyle. This article is a stub . You can help

Bring on the computer games - studying geography is getting a lot cooler

Pity the poor high school teacher, standing at a blackboard with nothing to engage the interest of fourteen-year-olds except a measly bit of chalk and a voice that can holler if necessary. It is like engaging in modern warfare with bows and arrows. The students have grown up with high speed video games and zoom controls. The teachers are at a mean disadvantage.
GIS computerized mapping is not new. It takes data from many sources and digitally overlays all layers of a community and/or environment on a map. So called "geomatics" were used to develop Nova Scotia's 911 grid, the Halifax Regional Municipality stores and analyzes geographic and land use data using geomatics, even high-end cars come equipped with GIS features. What is new is that the methods are being adopted in Nova Scotia classrooms. In another few years, GIS in the classroom will be the norm across the province.
Helen McWilliams, a geography teacher at Sackville High School, will be among those piloting the program starting next January. "What's really great," she says, "is that the people who do graphics for some of the popular computer games are involved in designing the ArcView program. Students will be able to move through their own neighborhood in 3D. It's pretty hard to get their attention with chalk and talk when they are so used to working with computers and flying over things... this is great stuff!"
