Environmental Issues
One of the most serious environmental issues facing Nova Scotia is acid rain , a form of air pollution that is harmful to many types of plant and aquatic life throughout the Maritime provinces. A principal component of acid rain is sulfur dioxide, which is emitted by local coal-burning power plants. Prevailing winds also bring sulfur emissions from the northeastern United States. Domestic production of sulfur dioxide has dropped considerably since the early 1980s due to more advanced pollution prevention technology at power plants, and acid rain has declined since that time. However, many scientists believe that acid rain still poses a threat to Nova Scotia’s environment, and they advocate further emission reductions to protect the long-term health of vulnerable areas.

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are completely within the Atlantic Maritime ecozone, along with the Gaspe peninsula. Climate
Covering Quebec's Gaspé peninsula and the entirety of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, this ecozone's climate is strongly influence by the Atlantic Ocean, which produces cooler summers and warmer winters. Winter temperatures average -5ºC and summers average 14ºC, with coastal areas having slightly warmer winters and cooler summers than inland. The Atlantic also provides moisture to the region, producing mean precipitation of 900mm a year inland and over 1500mm a year on the coast; this high precipitation also means that the region has more storms than anywhere else in the country. Geology and Geography
Geologically, this region is a mix of sedimentary and igneous bedrock. Inhospitable igneous highlands form much of the interior of the many peninsulas that form this ecozone. Acid soils found here support vast forests, but are poor for agriculture, and the cold wet climate prevents many people from living in this part of the ecozone. The coastal lowlands, overlying sedimentary bedrock, are far more accessible, have better soils for agriculture, and a milder climate. Not surprisingly, the lowlands are where most of the ecozone's human population lives.

L OCATED IN ONE
Environment Canada estimates that Nova Scotia has more storms than any other part of Canada, often influenced by severe weather passing over the Atlantic Ocean. In late summer and early fall, the region can be hit by the tail ends of both hurricanes and tropical storms as they spiral up the east coast of North America. Winds can exceed 150 km/h and bring with them heavy rains and wave heights as high as 14 metres, wreaking havoc on land and sea. Winter brings ice storms and blizzards, reducing visibility and causing damage. Return to Et cetera

A T 2 A.M. ON A PRIL 1 , 1873, Captain James A. Williams of the SS Atlantic
Waves swept away lifeboats on the port side, and within minutes, the Atlantic keeled over. Some of the 933 passengers and crew made it to shore. But by dawn, 562 people, including all the women and all but one child, had perished.
Williams was far from the only captain to have run his ship off course in Nova Scotian waters, where treacherous conditions make the province one of the shipwreck capitals of North America.
BELOW
Nova Scotia is one of the stormiest regions in the country, sometimes battered for days at a time with gale-force winds and huge waves that can drive even the most powerful of vessels against an unforgiving shore. Deep, rocky channels line the coast, and submerged shoals and rocks present deadly obstacles. And with cool and warm currents colliding offshore, fog can often shroud the coast. Combine its geographical character with bustling harbours, more than 300 years of primitive navigational aids and a proximity to busy international shipping lanes and rich fishing grounds, and it is no mystery why so many ships have gone to their watery graves off Nova Scotia.

Welcome Parrsboro is the largest town on the Minas Basin and a major tourist centre on this portion of the Glooscap Trail.
The town has accommodations, gift shops, restaurants, a medical centre, R.C.M.P., campgrounds, a quaint shopping area, parks, museums, a golf course, live theatre and a variety of nearby scenic drives.
In 1985, the biggest fossil find in North America was unearthed on the North Shore of the Minas Basin near Parrsboro. This discovery consisted of more than 100,000 pieces of 200 million year old fossils, the largest single collection of fossils, the first such collection found in North America and the first fossils in a series of dinosaur footprints, each the size of a penny, which are the smallest ever discovered.
As early as 1776, Parrsboro, then known as Partridge Island, was a relatively important settlement. In 1784, the present name was given in honor of Lieut. Col. John Parr, then Governor of Nova Scotia.
The Minas Basin is one of the locations of the world's highest tides, and their dramatic effect on shipping can be seen from the Parrsboro wharf when fishing boats and pleasure vessels are left stranded high and dry by the low tide. At high tide water fills the harbour and reaches the mouth of the small creek that runs under the main street.

Nova Scotia
The Atlas of Canada. The French established the first European settlement in 1604, calling it Acadia. By 1750, they had a community of 12,000 inhabitants. The only English-speaking inhabitants before 1749 were in Annapolis and Canso, but in that year, Halifax was founded with the arrival of 2,500 settlers. In 1753, Lunenburg was established by German immigrants. Nova Scotia grew rapidly in the second half of the eighteenth century with the arrival of many immigrants from New England. The advent of the Loyalists after 1782 resulted in the division of the territory into two separate colonies, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Researchers interested in ancestors who lived in Nova Scotia use the main kinds of genealogical sources. Attention focuses mostly on records related to the Acadians, Loyalists and Mi'kmaq. The Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management has various types of online databases on their site - genealogical resources on the Mi'kmaq, divorces, census records, and birth, marriage and death records. The guide Getting Started with your Genealogical Research provides further information on how to do genealogical research in Nova Scotia.
