Nova Scotia, Canada
Welcomes you
For a good reason Nova Scotia is known as Canada's Ocean Playground. For many Nova Scotians the sea is main part of their lives - either to make a living or for recreation.
The coastline stretches for 7,400 kilometres and is indented by thousands of bays and inlets. The coast is dotted by more than 3,800 islands. Due to the influence of the sea the climate is mild, summers are comfortable and fall pleasant.
There are many things to do in Nova Scotia. Parks, hiking trails, lakes, streams, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries are a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Sailing, cycling, river rafting, kayaking and canoeing to name just a few activities the province of Nova Scotia has to offer. This is completed by entertainment, culture, historic sites and of course fine dining. The Highlands National Park contains one of the world's most spectacular driving route. Kejimkujik National Park is a true jewel for outdoor friends. Explore the many lakes and islands on a canoe tour and camp on uninhabited islands. White sandy beaches can be found on the eastern shore. Visit world famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse, a remnant of early days. Enjoy the world's highest tides on the Bay of Fundy. Golfers will fall in love with this province as they will find some of the most beautiful and challenging courses, such as the Highland Links course in Cape Breton or Digby Pines in Digby.
Nova Scotia in Figures
The province of Nova Scotia covers an area of 55,000 sq km. The mainland part of the province is connected to New Brunswick and the remainder of Canada by the 28 km Isthmus of Chignecto. Cape Breton Island is joined to the mainland by the Canso Causeway. Halifax, the capital city is located south of Paris. The coastline stretches for 7,400 km, but the overall length of the province is only 575 km, while the average width is 130 km.

First Nations Affiliation: Mi'kmaq Teresa Marshall's multimedia sculptures and installations address the ellipses and absences in the dominant Eurocentric version of North American history. Marshall grew up in a bi-cultural military family, partially on the Millbrook reserve, before studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where she won numerous scholarships and academic awards. Since then, she has earned a multitude of project and travel grants and awards from the Canadian Native Arts Foundation, the Canada Council, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and agencies in British Columbia (where she now resides). Since the early 1990s, Marshall has worked extensively as an instructor, juror, visiting artist and lecturer across Canada.

Jean Timsit, France (chair) Rapporteur: Laura Delaney Karma Ura Mr. Urma gave an informational slide show about Bhutan. The following comments arouse from that presentation:
  • Is modernization a cultural shift from mountains to the plains for people, and shift of animals from plains to mountains? Bhutan is culturally diverse. Because of poor communication between areas bordered by rivers, several languages have developed. Bhutan used to have a trans-human culture, with winter to summer seasonal vertical migration change. However, Bhutan is now noticing a trend toward permanent village-town migration. A typical way of greeting someone in Bhutan is "Are you coming from above or below?" because of the mountainous region. How to preserve culture?

THE CULTURE VIDEO
On the east coast of Canada, Nova Scotia offers a spectacularly beautiful and diverse maritime landscape along with a unique culture that results in sightings of men in kilts, playing their bagpipes, and the uplifting sounds of Celtic music in the air. Steeped in Scottish influence, Nova Scotia celebrates its Celtic heritage and military pride with daily and annual festivals, and at special colleges devoted to perpetuating Gaelic themes.

A known habitation site at Debert, nova scotia, is one of the most As timeprogressed, many different cultural groups came to settle in the new land.
http://museum.gov.ns.ca/arch/culture.htm
Cultural Origins
The First People
The first people to come to the area are known to archaeologists as the Palaeo-Indians . A known habitation site at Debert, Nova Scotia, is one of the most important finds of this period in eastern North America. One of the most distinctive artifacts associated with this group is the fluted spear point Very little evidence exists for the presence of people in Nova Scotia between 9,000 and 5000 years ago. However, archaeological finds from other parts of Atlantic Canada and New England indicate that people were in the region. From about 5000 to 2,500 years ago evidence does suggest that people are living in the area we know today as Nova Scotia. This period (9,000-2,500 BP) is known to archaeologists as the Archaic Period Following the Archaic Period is the Maritime Woodland Period which runs from about 2500 years ago to European contact. One of the most distinctive features of this period is the presence of clay pottery.
Colonial Settlement
Although evidence suggests that Basque, Portuguese and French fisherman were making seasonal visits to the area during the sixteenth century, the first known permanent European settlement in Nova Scotia was established by the French at Port Royal in 1605.
