CUBA EVENTS IN SEPTEMBER
28th: Documentary Film, 29th: Orlando Rodriguez
NSCUBA is pleased to present two great events to kick off Fall, 2005! On September 28th , Irish filmmaker Bernie Dwyer and her co-director, Cuba's Roberto Ruiz, appear in Halifax and Wolfville as part of a cross-Canada tour to present their acclaimed documentary, "Mission Against Terror" . The film documents the history of terrorist acts against Cuba since 1959, showing how Florida has been an ideal base of operations for terrorist groups. It focuses on the imprisonment of the Cuba Five , counter-terrorism agents who investigated and infiltrated those groups, only to be thrown in jail by the U.S. for "spying".
a donation of $5.00 to assist NSCUBA in covering the cost of hosting the filmmakers on this leg of their Canadian tour. DVDs of the film will be available for sale, as will other current books on Cuba which may be of interest. Doors at the Weldon Law Building open at 6:30pm, Room 105 - come early for best seating, and chat with NSCUBA members about our work!

Culture Division The Department of Tourism and Culture is an active supporter and promoter of Nova Scotia's culture sector. Through this support, government recognizes the importance of our artists and our cultural community. It also acknowledges that producing arts and crafts for markets both here at home and around the world helps to drive our economy and provides a better quality of life. This division's mission is to develop and promote cultural resources and artistic expression, in partnership with and for Nova Scotians. The Culture Division provides annual assistance and services to the culture sector, which is one of the fastest growing sectors in Nova Scotia. The direct and indirect impact of the culture sector in Nova Scotia, as measured by the contribution to the GDP, was estimated at almost $1.2 billion in 2001, with some 28,000 direct and indirect jobs depending on culture activities. After obtaining his Teacher's Certificate from the Nova Scotia Teacher's College, Alistair took his B.A. and B.Ed. (1960) from St. Francis Xavier University, his M.A. (1961) from the University of New Brunswick, and his Ph.D. (1968) from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at Indiana University from 1966 until 1969, then moved to the University of Windsor, where he is currently Professor of English and Creative Writing.
