Nova Scotia, Canada
Welcomes you
For a good reason Nova Scotia is known as Canada's Ocean Playground. For many Nova Scotians the sea is main part of their lives - either to make a living or for recreation.
The coastline stretches for 7,400 kilometres and is indented by thousands of bays and inlets. The coast is dotted by more than 3,800 islands. Due to the influence of the sea the climate is mild, summers are comfortable and fall pleasant.
There are many things to do in Nova Scotia. Parks, hiking trails, lakes, streams, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries are a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Sailing, cycling, river rafting, kayaking and canoeing to name just a few activities the province of Nova Scotia has to offer. This is completed by entertainment, culture, historic sites and of course fine dining. The Highlands National Park contains one of the world's most spectacular driving route. Kejimkujik National Park is a true jewel for outdoor friends. Explore the many lakes and islands on a canoe tour and camp on uninhabited islands. White sandy beaches can be found on the eastern shore. Visit world famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse, a remnant of early days. Enjoy the world's highest tides on the Bay of Fundy. Golfers will fall in love with this province as they will find some of the most beautiful and challenging courses, such as the Highland Links course in Cape Breton or Digby Pines in Digby.
Nova Scotia in Figures
The province of Nova Scotia covers an area of 55,000 sq km. The mainland part of the province is connected to New Brunswick and the remainder of Canada by the 28 km Isthmus of Chignecto. Cape Breton Island is joined to the mainland by the Canso Causeway. Halifax, the capital city is located south of Paris. The coastline stretches for 7,400 km, but the overall length of the province is only 575 km, while the average width is 130 km.

Things to Do in Nova Scotia
THE STORY OF NOVA SCOTIA The Early Days: The word Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin. The province was named by one of the first groups to lay claim to the land, the Scots. However, long before any Europeans arrived, the Mi'kmaq people (pronounced "Mig-maw," accent on the first syllable) lived here for thousands of years, and many still do.
In 1492, Columbus sailed to the New World and claimed it was now owned by Spain. But the French and the English were not prepared to let the Spanish have it all. First, the English hired an Italian sailor named John Cabot, who sailed across the Atlantic from England in 1497 (just five years after Columbus), and ended up in Nova Scotia. He landed at Cape North, on Cape Breton Island, claimed the land for England, and then went back home. The Coming of the Acadians: Many years went by. Then about 100 years after Columbus, the French sent a fleet of sailing ships to the western coast of our province. They called the land Acadie (pronounced "Ah-ka-dee," accent on the first syllable), which means fertile land. After spending a terrible winter on a small island, they moved to the mainland in the spring of 1605 and built a small fur-trading post called Port Royal. This was one of the first permanent French settlements in the New World and it eventually grew into a French colony called Acadia. It was at this settlement that North America's first theatre and social club were founded, along with the planting of the first apple trees. The Port Royal settlement (often called the Habitation) has been completely restored. It is a popular place to visit and is very close to Annapolis Royal on the Bay of Fundy.

INTRODUCTION: The province of Nova Scotia, "Canada's ocean playground," is an eastern province of Canada, consisting of a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic and Cape Breton Island, totaling: 55,490 sq. km. (21,425 sq. mi.); and population of 1,000,000. However, the ocean is usually cold, and except for summertime, only wet suited windsurfers will venture in. Most of us prefer to watch whales (best area on the Atlantic Ocean to see them), sail (or watch the Bluenose II sail), eat lobsters, and go fishing, inland or at sea. British settlers founded Halifax in 1749. Great Britain maintained a military base there for many years because of the city's strategic location. THE CITY OF HALIFAX: is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, and is a major sea port on the Atlantic Ocean. Halifax has five major academic institutions, a college for art and design, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, several other research centers, and a large Department of National Defence Canadian Forces Base (Shearwater). Population (Metro): 380,000 (approx). City of Halifax (Area): 79.2 sq. km.

The peninsula is connected to the mainland by the isthmus of Chignecto. Cape Breton Island is separated from the peninsula by the Strait of Canso. Most of the province is covered with forests and lakes. The larger towns are mainly along the seacoast. Since the 1930s, manufacturing and processing industries have increased greatly in importance, and they are now by far the largest source of income from production. Many of the manufacturing jobs are closely linked to the province’s primary resources. Fish, particularly cod, has been hit by dwindling stocks; therefore fishing is no longer the major engine of the Nova Scotia economy. A popular tourist area, Nova Scotia is often called Canada’s ocean playground because of its numerous beaches. A 2002 real estate survey has estimated the population of Nova Scotia at 940,000.
