Overview of the Norwegian Language
There are approximately 4 million speakers of the Norwegian language. Norwegian consists of two distinct dialects, bokmål and nynorsk. Both are part of the Scandinavian language family of the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages, and both have equal status in Norway. Bokmål (literally "book language") is used primarily in the cities. Most newspapers and television and radio broadcasts are in bokmål, which is closely related to Danish. Nynorsk is a dialect that was formed in the mid-1800s from the rural dialects of Norwegian, in a conscious effort to separate the Norwegian language from Danish. It is believed that the two languages will eventually merge, although recent attempts to make that happen have failed.
Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish are linguistically very closely related and are generally mutually intelligible. This is due to the way the national boundaries have been in flux throughout Scandinavian history. Norway and Denmark were a single country for four centuries, until 1814. And after they split apart, Norway was under the rule of the Swedish crown until 1905. The movement for the recognition of a Norwegian language separate from Danish and Swedish led to the consequent formation of nynorsk.

Introduction Norwegian is the national language of Norway, spoken by virtually all of the country's 4 million inhabitants. Norwegian is one of the Scandinavian languages, which form a branch of the Germanic languages, in turn a part of the Indo-European family. It Is closely related to Danish and Swedish, especially the former. Norway and Denmark were one country for four centuries before 1814, and from then until 1905 Norway was under the Swedish crown. During the years of Danish rule a Danish-influenced "city language" began to develop in Bergen and Oslo, and Danish eventually became the written language of Norway. Today there are two distinct dialects of Norwegian. The Dano-Norwegian dialect, originally called

Norwegian (Norsk)
Norwegian is a Germanic language with around 5 million speakers in Norway, Canada, Ecuador, Sweden, the UAE and the USA. Early Norwegian literature, mainly poetry and historical prose, was written in West Norse and flourished between the 9th and the 14th centuries. After that Norway came under Swedish and then Danish rule. Norwegian continued to be spoken but Danish was used for officials purposes, as a literary language and in higher education. After Norway separated from Denmark in 1814, Danish continued to be used in schools until the 1830s, when a movement to create a new national language emerged. The reasoning behind the movement was that written Danish differed to such an extent from spoken Norwegian that it was difficult to learn, and because they believed that every country should have its own language. There was considerable debate about how to go about creating a national language and two languages emerged - (language of the country), based on colloquial Norwegian and regional dialects, particularly the dialects of western Norway, and

It is spoken by about 4 million people in Norway and another million in the other Scandinavian countries and North America. Norwegian is a daughter language of Old Norse (see Germanic languages Norse language). Today there are two official forms of Norwegian: bokm¥l [book language] and nynorsk [new Norwegian]. Bokm¥l, also called riksm¥l [national language] and Dano-Norwegian, was greatly influenced by Danish, which was the dominant language of officialdom when Norway was under Danish rule (1397–1814). The language of the cities, the official and professional classes, and literature, bokm¥l came to differ greatly from the Norwegian spoken by the common people. Since 1905, however, orthographical and grammatical reforms by the government have brought bokm¥l closer to the popular form of Norwegian.

courtesy King Features Syndicate In 1995, Nancy Aarsvold , a Norwegian instructor at Augsburg College, and Louis Janus of the University of Minnesota created an email-based introduction to the Norwegian language which they called NorWord. The idea was to introduce a Norwegian phrase every day, with examples of usage and related words and phrases. NorWord ran from April through November 1995. In all, 160 lessons were sent. These were archived on a public Gopher server, but that server was shut down in 1999. Fortunately, I had a copy of the NorWord lessons on my computer. I split the archive files into separate daily lessons and set up a system to send one lesson every day. At first, I only sent the lessons to myself, but later I began sending them to others who requested them, with the permission of the authors. Now you can receive these lessons too, at no cost. The "course" takes about 6 months with lessons every weekday and extra materials on the weekends. To view sample lessons near the beginning and end of the series, click on these links:
