ANARCHISM ... SO FAR
The Anarchy of Norway is still going strong
Some time has passed on since the Norwegian People turned their back against the main economic political course of the social democrat government, at the 1994 EU referendum. While the Norwegian EEC referendum in the early seventies gave a movement to the left on the economic political map, the megatrend of the late eighties and early nineties was a movement to the right and upwards. The EU referendum indicated a further jump in this direction, and thus the economic political system in Norway made a revolutionary change, and passed the border between the marxist social democrat sector and the anarchist sector of social individualism. This of course is a major social event in the economic political world history. A long jump further rightwards may result in a social liberal system, and a reverse tendency may give a retardation to marxist social democracy, but this is not the case at the moment, and thus the living Anarchy of Norway (AoN) is still going strong. Although the system by now is significantly anarchist, i.e. within the Quadrant of Anarchism on the economic political map, it is somewhat far from the anarchist ideal on the top of the map. Thus, it is plenty of room for improvement from anarchist perspective, and by no means time for a break in the fight against authoritarian tendencies. The revolution must be fought permanent, in the daily life, to sustain and develope further. However, as long as a) Norway stays out of EU, b) populist and nationalist tendencies are put at place, and c) the left and right tendencies outbalance each other reasonable as by now, Norway will probably stay anarchist, and be a lighthouse for EU and the rest of the world.

L ong before the Swedish, Finnish or even the Viking culture had developed, the Scandinavian peninsula was populated by the Saemieh (hereafter referred to as Sami). The oldest written source of knowledge on the Sami's is the Roman historian Tacitus' who describes fenni in a book from 98 A.D, although his account most certainly was based on hearsay only.
In 555 A.D. the Greek historian, Procopius, refers to Scandinavia as Thule , and the inhabitants he calls skridfinns . At this time the most southern part of Sweden was populated by the Vendel people a peaceful group of sunworshippers. Since they lived in a time before recorded history for this part of the world, little is known today about the Vendel's. Later the immigration by and mixing with germanic tribes gave birth to the wellknown Viking culture in Sweden and Norway. D uring the Viking Age -and later- in the Middle Ages, Sweden was only about a third of it's present size, the northern 2/3 of the country was populated by the Sami. Even though the Sami tales about the Stalo suggests that there was a long-lasting conflict with the Vikings. The Sami's also traded first with Vikings and later with travelers from northern Europe such as tradesmen from the Hanseatic league.

108. The History Of The Catholic Church In Norway
A very short survey of the history Norweigan Catholic Church.
http://www.katolsk.no/www/about_en.htm
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway is as old as the kingdom itself, going back till about 900 A.D., with Christian monarchs from 930. The country was finally converted after the death of the king Saint Olav (+ 1030). The Christianisation was largely the work of Anglo-Saxon missionaries, and the Norwegian Church has been considered the only daughter of the English. Cardinal Nicolas Breakspear established Church province in 1153; the archbishop resided in Nidaros (Trondheim). The prosperous years of the High Middle Ages were followed by decline for Church and nation alike, although Norwegian Catolicism retained much of its vitality. The people were unprepared for the Lutheran Reformation imposed by the Danish king in 1537. In spite of severe punishment for Catholic practices, the faith survived in parts of the country till about 1700. Christiania (Oslo) had an illegal but tolerated Catholic congregation for a couple of years in the 1790s. The first parish after the Reformation was established in the capital in 1843; a few years later Catholic places of worship were opened in Alta (Finnmark), Tromsø and Bergen. Most Norwegian Catholics have a foreign background; this partly explains the once popular prejudice that Catholicism is something alien. Religious sisters working in hospitals and schools did much to overcome anticatholicism; Catholic authors, e.g. Sigrid Undset and Hallvard Rieber-Mohn O.P., also contributed to this. Protestants and Catholics were brought closer together in firm opposition to the Quisling regime during the German occupation (1940-45).

From Mum's meatcakes to strawberries under the snow...
The setting was Lillehammer during the 17th Winter Olympics, the scene the restaurant Mormors Hus, which is owned by one master chef and employs another in the kitchen, both intent on maintaining a Norwegian culinary profile: joy knew no bounds when the wife of the U.S. President announced her intention to visit. "I hope she will forget what she had, but remember the place and the friendliness," the proprietor said, when Hillary selected a pasta tagliatelli. Well, what's wrong with pasta? Nothing, nothing at all. It's just not Norwegian. Nor is pizza, though we are Europe's top consumers of frozen pizza, and pizza certainly figures prominently on Norway's 1994 menu. But Norwegian? What does it take for food to be called Norwegian? Even the potato, thought of as almost as Norwegian as brown goats' cheese, originally arrived from abroad. Norwegians celebrated the potato's 250th anniversary last year. What food, then, is Norwegian? Asked which dish we think of first as Norwegian, 65 per cent of us reply meatcakes, while 36 per cent think of lamb and cabbage stew and 23 per cent reply cod. A nationwide survey carried out in January 1994, in connection with the Government's promotion "Competitive Strategies for Norwegian Food", showed distinct regional preferences where dishes are concerned. While meatcakes rank first in all regions, westerners rank potato dumplings second, and Oslo-dwellers rank "lutefisk" (dried cod steeped in lye) third, just ahead of dried mutton ribs and fresh cod.

    The Sami of Norway
    Elina Helander
An ethnic minority and a separate people, but Norwegian citizens too. This is how Norway officially defines the country's Sami ethnic minority. But this has not always been the case. Since 1980, the legal status of the Sami, the native inhabitants of Norway, has been considerably improved. This change in attitude is reflected in an Article in the Norwegian Constitution which the national assembly, the Storting, ratified in 1988. It reads as follows: It is the responsibility of the authorities of the State to create conditions enabling the Sami people to preserve and develop its language, culture and way of life. The Sami Act sets out the main guidelines for the Sami Parliament (Sameting), which was officially opened in 1989. The Parliament's sphere of operations and other current Sami issues are described in this article, which has its starting point in early history. The Sami are an indigenous people who form an ethnic minority in Norway, Sweden and Finland. There is also a small population on Russia's Kola peninsula. In more recent history, i.e. from about the sixteenth century, Sami have inhabited nearly all the areas of the Nordic countries where they now have permanent settlements. The Sami region extends from Idre, in Dalarne, Sweden, and adjacent areas in Norway south to Engerdal in Hedmark County. To the north and east it stretches to Utsjoki in Finland, Varanger in Norway and on to the Kola peninsula in Russia.
