Here at Orkanger in Sør Trøndelag, Norway's first producer of prefabricated buildings was located. Christian Thams designed and exported log buildings throughout the world at the end of the 1800's - everything from casinos and churches to homes and railway stations. He also started a mine and built Norway's first electric railway.
If we look behind the scenes at Bårdhaug Herregård, we will we will find one of the most exciting industrial adventures in Norway's history. Here we will see the main character standing majestically amongst kings and princes, but also with lumbermen, miners and railwaymen.
The majestic manor at Orkanger in Sør Trøndelag was the home of its founder and man of the world, Christian Thams - architect, minister, landowner and consul.
The jump in the Thames
Christian's great, great, great, great grandfather was English. During the religious conflicts in England during the 1600's, he had to jump into the Thames River to avoid his persecutors. It is told that he made his way on board a Danish ship, which saved his life. As thanks, he took the name Thams. The boat later brought him to Norway.
Christian Thams was born in Trondheim in 1867. His great grandfather, Jacob Thullin Thams, was a member of the constitutional assembly at Eidsvoll in 1814, and his grandfather started a sawmill in Trøndelag about fifty years later. On the year that Christian was born, his grandfather William established a steam powered saw mill at Orkanger, and his father, Marentius, started exported fresh salmon from the same place - a project that really took off in 1870. The fish was transported in ice from 200 icehouses along the Norwegian coast.

Norway Spring
Norway Spring In 1878 a sawmill was erected here as the first industry in the Norway - Vulcan area. John O'Callaghan was owner of this mill which supplied early mining number needs until 1902. This spring was caused by a 1094 foot hole which was drilled in 1903 by the Oliver Mining Company in search of iron ore. The hole cuts several steeply dipping porous strata that trap water at the higher elevations to the north. The difference in elevation causes pressure: this pressure is released by the drilled hole demonstrating the principle of the artesian well. On the slope to the north are the obscure workings of the Few and Munro mines, operated in 1903-1922, now owned by the Ford Motor Company.

BEAUTIFUL! Full of history. Lovely people. Cons None Full Review I've been fortunate enough to visit Norway twice and the beautiful country and great, friendly people quickly captured my heart! Both times I spent my time visiting friends I had met over the years on the internet, so I had personal guides through each city I stayed at. This gave me an advantage, of course, I had someone who knew the 'off the beaten path' sites and could also share the history of the places we visited. The first trip was in May of 1994 - I spent just one week in this beautiful country. I flew into Oslo, was picked up by an internet friend, and made the approximately one hour drive to Sarpsborg. I only spent a little over a day there, but it was a wonderful time. We saw Viking burial grounds, ancient rock paintings, and beautiful, very green forests. This was a GREAT place to spend time outside - the countryside was clean, beautiful, and GREEN. The historical sites we visited (an old, old village, the rock drawings, etc.) were well cared for and gave me a chance to learn of Norway's history. I then went on to Oslo to spend a day and a half. While there, my hosts made sure I had plenty to see! We visited the Folk Musuem where there are a collection of buildings from many, many periods of Norway's history. You can wander through houses, churches, school buildings, shops and more. They've been moved to the museum and preserved. One of the most beautiful thing to see there is an old, old stave church. I also got to see Viking ships which had been restored and many Viking relics. It is amazing to think of the men who crossed the sea in those tiny ships! I also visited the Royal Palace (which you can walk right up to!) and the Sculpture park which features more sculptures than I could count.

King Harald had many children, and his heirs ruled Norway with short interruptions until 1319. By utilising their excellent boats and organisation they became master traders and warriors. Around 1200 the Norwegian king ruled over land from Man in the Irish Sea to the Kola Peninsula in the east. Religious influence from Europe (especially Ireland) led to the adoption of Christianity. Central in this was King Olav Haraldsson [Den Hellige] who died in the battle of Stiklestad. He was later canonised into Saint Olav. Kalmar Union
After being united under a single king and christened, Norway united with Denmark and Sweden in the Kalmar Union (1397-1523), which ended when Sweden seceded and Norway and its possessions quickly sank to the status of provinces under Denmark. Norway's power were further weakened by the fact that one third of the population died during the Black Death pandemic of 1349-1351. Many towns lost all their population and still remain empty today. Norway's provincial status lasted until 1814; this period is called "the-400-year-night".

Contact Us Help About Us NORWAY Travel to Norway - the country in Northern Europe with the breathtaking coastline Norway is a long, narrow country on the northwestern edge of the European continent. The northern third of Norway lies above the Arctic Circle and is called the land of the Midnight Sun. Because this region is so far north, Norway, along with Denmark and Sweden, is one of the Scandinavian countries. Vikings lived in all three Countries about a thousand years ago. Vikings from Norway sailed west and established colonies in Iceland and Creenland. About A.D. 1 000, Leif Ericson sailed from Creenland and headed what was the first European expedition to the mainland of America. Norway is mostly a high, mountainous plateau covered by bare rock, and it has a relatively small amount of farmland. But the rivers that rush down from the mountains provide much cheap electricity. Norway generates more hydroelectric power per person than any other country. Norwegian manufacturing is based on this cheap power. Important products of Norway include chemicals, metals, petroleum, processed foods, and wood pulp and paper. Norway is one of Europes largest producer of petroleum due to its massive oil reserves. Which has made Norwegians one of the richest people in the world.

Norwegian authorities have confirmed that the classic landscape 1830 painting "Rjukanfoss" by JC Dahl, recently stolen from the Norsk Hydro company, has been returned by the thieves using a local radio station as intermediary after they realized they couldn't sell or claim ransom money for it. Unfortunately, the painting didn't escape damage. Its canvas was ripped and it reportedly had been placed in a hole dug in the forest outside Oslo. A spokeswoman at Hydro said it will take at least a year to restore the painting.

Historical Background
As far back as in the year 1000, the Norwegian king, Olav den Hellige, forbade everyone who was not Christian to live in Norway but only in the time of king Christian IV (late 16th century) do we find specific references to the Jews. The Jews in question were mainly those who in and 1498 were driven out of Spain and Portugal . These Sephardi Aschkenazi-Jews ," from Eastern-, Central- and part of Western Europe. King Christian IV's successor, King Fredrik III, was not as liberal as his predecessor and during his time the Jews in the area once again lived under strict conditions. They were not allowed to be in the Danish-Norwegian kingdom without a form of visa . In 1687, when Norway was united with Denmark under King Christian V's law, the prohibition of Jews entering the country was reinserted. There was a fine for anyone who broke this law and a reward for the person who informed against a Jew. About 150 years later, in 1830, the attitude towards Jews was somewhat more lenient and by 1844 the Justice Department decided that "Portuguese-Jews" would be permitted to enter freely.

From Local Assembly to National Assembly
The Storting , Norway's national assembly, was constituted at Eidsvoll in 1814, but its roots are far older. Even before recorded history began in Scandinavia (around 800 AD), free men met in allting (common assembly) in the various districts scattered around the country, where they discussed legal, and to some extent, political matters of general concern. Later, during the Middle Ages, these tings, or assemblies, evolved into the local assemblies of rural districts and towns, and they acquired important functions in relations between the king and the common people. Moreover, it was at specific regional assemblies that a pretender to the throne was customarily acclaimed and "taken" as king.
Photo: Jiri Havran When Norway was united as a kingdom (900 - 1030 AD), the first lagtings were constituted as superior regional assemblies. These were representative assemblies at which delegates from the various districts in each region met to award legal judgments and pass laws.
